- SHS 18 - Daewoo DP-51 Pistol
I found this today in my dealer’s case: A South Korean Daewoo DP-51 Pistol chambered in 9mm (9x19).
It’s an interesting pistol with a few quirks. On its face, it appears to be very similar to the S&W 39/59 series of pistol. A DA/SA service pistol.
But the quirk? This pistol after cocking the action is capable of having the hammer pushed back into the dropped position.
But the action is still cocked. So when working the first DA pull, it feels like a long, but very, very light trigger.
This reminds me of the aftermarket gimmick triggers that were being peddled for 1911’s to get them qualified as double-action guns for various police departments.
That was not a successful feature standalone. And I doubt this feature did much to help the DP-51’s sales in the US. But I can admit…I will get this pistol on the timer and see how I do. I suspect I can make it work quite well.

Call it my channel prerogative. While filming this episode of The Second Hand Showcase, I decided to snatch this example up for our reference collection. Interesting pistol. I'm looking forward getting it on the timer.

The Dp51 is very smooth to fire and very safe I fired that thing back in September that shit shoots like a king no jams very controllable recoil and very useful triple action feature
Glad to hear you are happy with your DP. The triple action thing is very interesting and from a different time.

Wow, crazy.
Interesting pistol.
It is. Doesn’t really hold a candle to modern designs. But interesting in that an actual nation state picked it up.

That was my first centerfire pistol as a teenager back in the 90s got it for my 16th birthday. Turned out to be a major disappointment the trigger bar broke and the local gunsmith refused to even look at it. Eventually rigged up the pistol to fire but you had to cock the hammer for every shot LOL. I lent it to a girl and she let it get stolen and I was so disappointed in that I didn't really care. Wish I still had it though could fix it right up now. Other than the trigger bar breaking I never had any malfunctions with it
Cool find! The Daewoo DP-51 is a solid pistol, I came close to purchasing one many years ago. I think I got a S&W .40cal instead... I should have got the Daewoo. The South Koreans pulled out of most of the US market because of people thinking that anything out of Asia was junk, and if they were going to buy foreign, then they wanted something from Europe. If I remember correctly, the Daewoo's were all priced competitively as well, although their Service rifles in semi-auto did cost more than others. But they were well made also, so there is that!

The rifles have a very weird safety selector as I recall.

The Daewoo from when this pistol was made no longer exists as it was broken up into many smaller companies, many which still exist today. This pistol reminds me of the S&W 59 series and supposedly you can use those mags in the DP51 as well. Also a newer updated version of this pistol called the LH9 was introduced several years back.
Hmmm...I’ll look into the 59 mags for sure. Thanks!

It was my first gun and I still have it for a sentimental reason.
The older I get, the more I wish I hadn’t sold off so many. Smart man.

Can you move rack while the hammer is down and the safety is on
Just checked.
Yes.

Can lasers or Red dots be put on daewoo ?
As this gun sits now, no.
Sure, you can spend the money to have anything done but I don’t think it would be worth it.
