Watch as a male Wilson's Bird-of-Paradise clears his display court of leaves and other forest debris so his amazing colors will be the center of attention if and when a female arrives. Filmed by Tim Laman on Waigeo island, in September of 2010.

Absolutely perfect. Birds of Paradise have been an obsession of mine since a school librarian introduced me to them. It's an honor to see these great creatures and I honor the people who captured these images.

Limited predation also helps with the evolution of gorgeous birds as they don't need to blend in as much as ones on mainland or areas with predators.
yep. living in an environment with plentiful food and few predators means the only real selective pressure is sexual selection. so birds-of-paradise are free to get as absurd and ridiculous and colorful as they are to attract mates, and no need to worry about predators

PNG bird of paradise birds are seriously beautiful, they look like they belong on avatar with their blackest feathers and bright colours
I heard this bird only found naturally in Raja Ampat, Indonesia not PNG. And also after I read the description this was recorded on Waigeo island which is in Indonesia.

What happened in evolution to create such interesting, gorgeous birds?
its largely a result of their environment - dense rainforest with plentiful food and few predators. as such, predation and food are not major evolutionary pressures for birds-of-paradise. the main evolutionary pressure on birds-of-paradise is sexual selection, being as attractive as possible to mates. so it results in a feedback loop, male birds-of-paradise get more and more attractive to females, and in response the females get pickier and raise their standards, so the males get more attractive, and the females raise their standards again, and it just keeps going. not having to worry about predators, the males can just get more and more attractive, without having to worry about their bold colours and long plumes putting them at risk to predators
It does make you wonder about all this grand design martrix stuff. It is as if someone sat down and drew the most beautiful bird and then created it.

sexual selection gone wild. the rainforests of New Guinea are plentiful in food and predators are scarce, meaning sexual selection is the only real evolutionary pressure on birds-of-paradise. so they can just evolve to be more and more attractive to the ladies, without the disadvantages bold colours and long plumes would put on a bird in an environment with more predators
