I wonder if there's a backstory for each of the major characters here, because there's _so_ much we don't know. I would also like to know how the USA went from being the land of the free to a pseudo-fascist nightmare as well as how New York went down the toilet to the point where it became the country's only prison.

@Robert Douglass I remember some expanded media in the early 2000's about Snake Plizkin in a comic series and there was a sequel Escape from LA in 97, but that's all I know. Maybe there's more out there because you're right. There's so much back story there when we come into this movie that would be fascinating to expand on.

Ok. It's not confirmed, but everyone else was so miserable and cabbie was just living there, driving his hack around Manhattan like he'd been doing it for years. Kurt Russell is my all-time favorite actor. His characters are timeless, and he's just "the man" plain and simple. We were all hoping that Kurt's son, Wyatt Russell would be the new Snake Plissken for the rumored reboot, but I hear that it is dead in the water at this time; and YES you are correct, Snake Plissken was the inspiration for Solid Snake/Big Boss. As a matter of fact, in MGS2:SOL Snake uses the code name Iroquois (Snake) Plissken.

Yes, Harry Dean Stanton was in "Christine" amd "Alien". He also had a cameo in "The Avengers" as the security guard that finds The Hulk/Bruce when he crashes into the ground naked. The novelization based on the Screenplay explains everything:
WWIII broke out in 1985, as Russia launched a sneak attack against the US, destroying every city on the East coast, except for New York and Washington. In 1988, the crime rate in thr US rises 400%, then in 1991, New York was turned into a maximum security prison. Snake Plissken, a Special Forces operative, goes on several rescue missions and is declared a hero, but all rhis changed after the Russians launched a deadly nerve gas, killing his friends and family in the Midwest, and the effects of the gas causes him to lose an eye. In 1991, he becomes a famous outlaw and the rest is history.

7:13 it's true, Hideo Kojima was inspired by John Carpenter's Escape From New York, and the Snake Plissken character to create the Metal Gear series since 1987. Even in the game Metal Gear Solid , references in this film are depicted in the game from 1998, especially him being injected with a bio-weapon without his consent and under false pretenses.

Fun fact, John Carpenter and Kurt Russell have stated they would love to bring Snake Plissken back. Unfortunately Escape From LA didn't do so well and Carpenter was burned out from shooting Ghosts of Mars. Because of health reasons, that is why Carpenter retired retired from filmmaking to focus more on his music.

Primary filming of "Escape from New York" occurred over a period of about three months from roughly August to November of 1981. I was born and raised in the Lou but somehow this fact completely escaped me. I didn't know a thing about it until the following spring when an issue of Starlog covered the filming. For many years I kept my eyes open for the locations they used. I never saw a single one except of course for the Fox Theater which before it was restored was used as the entrance to the theater where Snake meets Cabbie. Long story short after fifteen years as a courier I got new info on specific locations and using GOOGLEMAPS and my BLU-RAY I found the primary locations. I'd spent 13 years on the graveyard shift with one company before switching to a different company and going to days. I'd been driving days for 2 years and didn't realize that I'd been delivering to a couple of buildings that were shown prominently onscreen. I took my camera with me to work the following week and when I got in the area I photographed them. I posted them on Facebook. They've changed over the years, but they are still very recognizable. But only if you are actively looking. I'd been going to these places and although seeing them from the same angle as the camera filmed them, I just did not see them. And as to "Escape from L.A.", skip it. It's not a sequel, it's a re-make and an inferior one. Major things that happened in the original happened in the 2nd, there was nothing really original in it. It was really nothing but trash, a complete waste of film. If you want more of Snake, hit your local comic-book shop and ask them about "The Snake Plissken Adventures" (I think that was the name of it).

John Carpenter was forced to re-write the bridge chase scene at the end. For a long time in Hollywood it was illegal to cast Ernest Borgnine in a film and not kill his character off, so Carpenter killed off Cabbie to avoid a mandatory three months in prison and lifetime ban from the directors guild............................Jamie Lee Curtis is in Escape From New York.
