Best part of this moment in the video, is actually her reaction to what happens to him. She (the character) was NOT expecting that to happen.... Not sure what she was expecting, but it wasnt that.

I think it's more than that. Every one of her attacks-stab to the heart from the back, slash to the throat/face, etc.) was an attempted instant kill. Despite her situation, she doesn't like hurting people, and I think she disliked that he suffered.

Amen. You are not alone brotha. This was a damn good time. Also, as a person who doesn't enjoy scary movies, this one and Van Helsing was a lovely way for a teen to get into the dark and spooky side of movies without a ton of jump scares.
@@Dindyracer Both seriously underrated movies. Along with Dracula 2000. I love these movies that have unique takes on the established mythos. They weren't spectacular, but they were clever and fun, and really what more can you ask for.

It doesn't work that way once show he can't look away that's why he kept it covered and with him at all times

These two and their chemistry was one of the best parts of the film. Flirting even when trying to kill each other. Amazing! And then she turns his portrait on him! Incredible!
In the original novel, _The Portrait of Dorian Gray,_ he could look at the painting just fine; it was stabbing the painting that killed him. I think being closer to the book in that regard might've been better; it would make Dorian being blackmailed with the painting make more sense, and imagine if this fight had ended with Mina stabbing the painting instead of her showing him the painting.
Hmm. Yeah - I didn't understand the whole blackmailing him with the picture if he had to look at it to undo the curse. I like this idea more though just because of the creepiness of it. I'd be freaked out about a living painting and my likeness was painted as a dead man. That means he could never see it until it was time for him to go and it's revealed to all of us, and it's quite a creepy looking picture. That's just me though, of course.
maybe her stabbing him (and him remaining stabbed) was a roundabout way of them retaining that aspect of the story. could be that one of them had to be stabbed while looking at one another.

If they hadn't clearly indicated that the painting was in a position that Dorian would regularly see, and it was about head height on the staircase IIRC, I'd think looking at it would be a fine way to break the curse...
But as it is? I still don't understand what they were thinking.
If anyone has seen Penny Dreadful, there is a part with Dorian Gray in where he has the portrait hidden and visits it every once in a while.
The movie's version of Dorian is the perfect example of the character whose main ability is the Skill From Age, and he rocks the hell out of it.
Skill doesn't give superhuman strength or speed. Ridiculous exaggeration. Dorian Gray would be no match for a vampire in physical fight. No matter of skills.

@@tindikukka In the novel, Count Dracula and his brides were eventually destroyed by mortals. Also, the fight between Dorian and Mina takes place during the day (when her powers would be at their weakest). At night, I would say that Dorian would be at a disadvantage, immortal or not. Ultimately, in works of fiction, the victor is whoever the writer wants to win, logic be damned.

Due to how Dorian's healing factor works (as if the wounds fade away like ash) I believe Mina expected Dorian to become ash and fade away

I think it's weird she's shocked by that, because that is exactly how you would expect it to look when a Vampire gets staked. And i believe Mina was at least present when Dracula was killed.

I’m still hoping this movie becomes kind of a cult classic one day. I just love it!!

That wasn't his lair, it was Moriarty's. He was leaving with the painting which had been given back to him as per the agreement. He was going to leave with it, which is why there are suitcases placed next to it. This makes sense. What doesn't was why it was on the staircase in his house where he would have seen it easily. Even if it was covered, any cover could have been removed without his knowing about it and he could have inadvertantly seen it then.
I feel like I'm the only one, but i love this movie.
I really enjoyed this film and think it was very underrated. It's rare to see an original story line these days.

Nah, she decided she was tired of Hollywood and returned to her native Australia with her husband to raise a family. I wish her well, she's doing what makes her happy.
This film with a little adjustment could have easily been a sequel to Van Helsing with Kate Beckinsale reprising Anna Valerious as the female vampire in this film. Van Helsing as an immortal archangel could have been part of the cast, his extreme age making him more than a match for Dorian Gray.
I love this movie too. Wish it had sequels so we could see more adventures of the league

This move was far ahead of its time. Now, they could say it is an "Avengers" clone. Or any Marver movie from the "Phase 1". It has its own Hawkeye (Quatermain), Black Widow (Mina Harker), Tony Stark (Cpt. Nemo/Gray), Hulk (Mr. Hyde), Loki (M), ... Or Mina's story is an "Underworld" prequel.
P. S. Would love to see how "Africa couldn't let Quatermain die". :)

I like the part of Dorian Gray in the painting turns into young and handsome again.
That was the curse upon him when he made the deal to sell his soul for eternal life and hedonistic debauchery. All of his sins affected the painting and not him, allowing him to live a life of debauchery. The caveat was, if he ever gazed upon the painting, his life of sin would be transferred from the painting on to him.
@@jimaiello750 Thing is, in the book, he could (and regularly did) look upon it without consequence. He gloated at how depraved his image became in the painting. If I recall correctly, it wasn't until he descended into an enraged madness and attempted to destroy the painting, was the magic undone.
I guess the film took some poetic licence.

This actor was supposed to play Aragorn in the LOTR trilogy but heard he was awful to everyone and didn't really want to be there, he got fired and they gave the role to Viggo Mortensen which turned out to be a bonus.
Yeah but they screwed him over financially. Dude showed up to work for six weeks and then they fired him a day after filming began because they thought he was too young for Aragorn. Fine; movies actually get recast all the time. But they did not pay him for the six weeks that he had worked, which under workplace laws, he had a right to be paid for. Instead they used a contract loophole to not pay him a single cent. I wonder how many CZcams commenters would be prepared to work at a job for six weeks for nothing.

@@mrcliff3709 Yeah he just walked away from it; I guess he figured six weeks' pay wasn't worth getting blacklisted for. But he showed up to the six weeks of rehearsals, line readings, photography and lighting trials, and fight choreography practice. All that counts as 'work' in the entertainment industry as the actual filming is only a small part of it. He had a right under New Zealand labor laws to be paid for what he'd done so far, even if they didn't get to the final filming stage.
Interestingly, this is the movie Sean Connery chose to do instead of playing Gandalf. this choice made him decide to retire from acting, since he no longer believed he could tell what would be a good movie

I truly enjoyed this film more than the critics; the model work was fantastic and the character acting made it very enjoyable. No it doesn't resemble the first GN but that's because they were making the film while Moore was still writing it.
It wouldn’t have made any difference: they made massive changes, just had to have Sean the lead even though that explicitly wasn’t the case in the book and Alan Moore never ever endorses the movies.

@@amberishkalyankar5328 Its a intelligent undead, normally it was a Necromancer that had achieved immortality by placing their soul into a Phylactery thus preventing their soul from leaving even if their body was destroyed. Main way to kill one is to destroy the Phlyactery and the Lich's soul is released and loses connection with their body/vessel and truly dies.
While not a mage I have to agree, since the main reason he wanted it back was so HE knew where it was hidden so no one could use it against him since it was the only thing that COULD kill him which Mina used.
@@violentinsanity4425 In true D&D fashion, even destroying the Phylactery is not enough to kill the Lich. You'll have to kill them physically too...otherwise they can just make another Phylactery later.

I watched this on cinema and I don't know why people complain that much abou tit. Might be because I was a kid but I enjoyed every single moment of the film.

There was a brief comment on a panel a few years back about a bunch of scene s that were shot but for timing didn’t make it. One of which being during the fight she would use stealth against him causing him to look around more. After being stabbed she would rise again and grab him from behind and make him look in a mirror. She would be standing in front of his portrait but not show up n the mirror for being a vampire forcing him to see it “through” her.

His is one of the most actual fantasy tale that ever fantasied. People tend to forget (though are reminded fervently by fans) that Grimm's tales and the like, just like the Bible or Chinese afterlife ideas or anything from the olden times were pretty damn dark. They did get touched up but the originals are still lurking out there, behind the fresh coat of sugar and puppies. And his story still gives me the creeps.
Dorian Grey isnt from the brothers Grimm, he is a character written by an Irish author Oscar Wilde. All of the characters are based on classical fiction, like Captain Nemo and Jules Verne, with Mina Murray being from Bram Stokers Dracula and Doctor Jekyll by Robert Louis Stevenson. None of the characters present in the story are FROM the brothers Grimm, as they specifically catalogued folk tales, whereas the League of Extraordinary Gentleman deals less with fairy tales and parables and more with fantasy and fiction.

Grimm stories are actually darn dark and far from being "children friendly". I used to be afraid of those stories, now I actually like them.

Because she's not used to it. Even if she's a creature of myth, the possibility of being vanquished exists, and being reminded of it seeing another one die is frightening.

Everyone has a limit. Even a doctor can still be shocked by blood and death.
'Besides, there's a world of difference between seeing someone die and seeing someone you had an emotional connection too aged to dust in a matter of seconds. Remember, the true price of immortality is loneliness and MIna is still coming to terns with that. With Dorian, she thought she had found a kindred spirit, but he turned out to be a traitor.
Stuart townsend is a very good actor, he should be recognized more
I liked the novelization better. In that, Dorian in the painting is still alive, hideously old and showing every abuse of his body that he had done. Needle marks, baggy eyes, loose skin, everything. In a matter of minutes, he grows to resemble the painting exactly, while the painting reverts. I think Mina gives him a mercy kill, but not positive.
It was implied that only a loved one could kill mina, but she was truly shocked when gray saw the portrait. Underrated actors these two.
Love this movie, and the comic, and the idea behind it, any fictional character could join the league! Always thought a good character would be the "Time Traveller" from H.G. Wells "Time Machine" if he found the time (pun intended) to simplify his machine (using future tech) into something less bulky, (say a cane) he could summon any number other fictional characters to join the league, Hercules, Merlin, the list goes on.

He did have a tiny prototype he showed off to his guests before using the one he traveled in, so it's very much possible. He'd have to give it a bigger sphere of influence, of course, so it could grab at least one person with it.
Volume I of the comic contains a short story or novella named "Alan and the Sundered Veil" in which Quartermain meets the Time Traveller. He doesn't play a significant role, though - your idea has more potential.
While I'm here, I might as well recommend the works of Philip Jose Farmer who too likes to create stories around fictional (and historic) characters. I'd think he had some influence on Moore.
Yes, and then there is a villain with a time machine that summons fictional villains and the League/Timetraveler has to stop him. But it turns out there is a villainer with a timier machine so the League/Timetraveler has to work together with the first villain to beat the bigger villain

The awfulness of this era's fully- digital effects condemns so many films, but I liked this film right from seeing it in the cinema - I liked the way the characters were drawn and the way they were directed, as it seemed to me, they all were able to inhabit the part.

It is a bit weird, but i noticed that after he gets pinned to the wall you never see both of the actors faces in the same frame afterwards which i assume is because they are both acting with a stand in, maybe they had to re-shoot the scene but the actors were unable to sync up their schedules or something.

If I was Dorian that portrait would never be on the same continent I was on, much less in the same room. The moment he collected it, his next stop should have been a post office.
And not long after he gave it to them, Dorian would start clutching at his chest in pain because some postal worker having a bad day ignored the "Fragile, Handle With Care" labels on the crate and punched a hole clean through it and the canvas.
The painting has to be cared for, otherwise he still dies if it's damaged or destroyed. I like the mail service, good people for the most part, but they'd be the last folks on Earth I'd trust my immortality talisman to.

Back in the 1800's? Very difficult to get a vacuum seal on something that big, mostly likely would cause more harm than good and would furthermore raise suspicion as to what was so special about the painting to require such unusual methods. With proper care, oil on canvas paintings can last for centuries without tipping off all and sundry it's a magic immortality talisman.
It wouldn't be cardboard back then for shipping paintings by the by, it was usually wooden crates with straw or other soft materials for padding, and the painting would be covered in canvas to further protect it.
Give Dorian a little credit, his painting was taken by Moriarity, the guy Sherlock Holmes couldn't get a handle on.

Probably the greatest movie that contained the greatest number of continuity errors.
Guilty pleasure movie here, loved it. Sad there was so much controversy on it, would have loved to see sequels. I also never noticed how the had amazing curls at the start of the fight then had straight hair once he stabbed her to the bed. Guessing it was one of the many reshoots for this movie.
Long overdue for a TV series or movie trilogy, although I worry the social agenda will ruin it...

The only problem with this scene was her figuring out the painting was his weakness.

Really liked this movie. Better than current marvel crap!

I really liked that movie to be honest but then I seem to like some movies that other people done like cloud atlas, snowpiecer and the original Dune. All classics and pieces of art to my mind.
this was like the Avengers of the classic monster films.
"I've watched great empires crumble" what in 18 years?, they couldn't have been that great.
Technically she should have dominated that fight considering she's a vampire and he's just a immortal human with no supernatural strength or speed. Also did her hair style change from the beginning of the fight to the end? Wasn't it wavy in the beginning, how it become straight?
