What on earth are you talking about? Many of the people in New York City share incredibly racist tendencies. Many Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and Black folk are pretty fucking racist toward each other. Not to mention the anti-semitism that is shared amongst a large portion of older Hispanic New Yorkers because of their experiences in the mid-20th century. Like… New York was widely known for its race clashes for the better part of a century between all kinds of people. Not just black and white, but Asian, Black, and Hispanic. Areas of the city are known for being places where particular groups assemble and for a reason.
Oftentimes it's the very diverse areas which see the most intense racism because under capitalism you have numerous groups forced to compete for limited resources; housing, jobs, etc, and you also have dominant groups feeling threatened by newcomers

The guardian angels claimed the guy was speaking Spanish too loud so they attacked him then they told police that it was because he assaulted a woman who was in their group and then when the police showed up they charged the guy who was attacked with disorderly conduct for disrupting the Fox interview by getting beaten on camera.
The leader of the guardian angels claimed afterward that they had made a mistake but "only a verbal mistake, not a physical one- he deserved the beating."

It’s frustrating how righties say criminals aren’t punished if they’re released without bail because they’re admitting that bail is punishment and we should imprison people if they’re too poor to afford bail even though they haven’t been convicted.
Yet they can’t even make that connection and instead insist that the accused criminal isn’t being punished at all.
These are usually the same people who shout "innocent until proven guilty" from the rooftops too

It’s money that lets you out of jail before your trial so you’ll eventually come to your trial and then you get the money back. And if you’re found guilty, then you get punished. That’s the deterrent to crime, not bail.
But many people can’t afford bail and get locked up even though they’re eventually found to be innocent, so they were imprisoned for being poor. And sometimes innocent people will plead guilty to crimes they didn’t commit because the punishment for pleading guilty is less than the time they’d stay in jail awaiting trial. But then they have a conviction on their record that ruins their life and keeps them poor.
Bail is punishment for being poor, not for committing crimes.

For those who don't know, the Guardian Angels were the inspiration for the subway shooting scene from 2019 Joker movie. An identical case, 1984 New York City Subway shooting, in which Bernhard Goetz shot 3 unarmed black teens became a rallying cry for the Angels along with Giuliani and Bloomberg
They weren't unarmed, they were carrying sharpened screwdrivers to avoid the NY laws against carrying knives.
The screwdrivers were never drawn as a weapon and the kids said they were going to use them to rob an arcade machine. Also the guy was a self admitted racist who shouted slurs at a public meeting. Weird hill to die on.

I think an important thing to distinguish is the fact that in countries where the police is far less oppressive and brutal a suspect can let themselves be apprehended and know that they're just gonna get cuffed and shoved in a car, meanwhile if you get apprehended in NYC or Minneapolis or so it's just as likely that they will literally murder you on the sidewalk as it is that they will actually properly apprehend you. In this case you can very much understand if a person's flight or fight senses kick in and they start violently fighting back in fear of their life.
Right, if getting arrest falsely was little more than a waste of a few hours of your time then people should probably not feel the need to fight for their life when the police grab them for no reason.

Homicide rate in South Africa is 45 per 100,000 people or 7.5X greater than the United States. This Sliwa guy was hugely popular in the early 1980s New York. He sold himself, and his girlfriend, as a kind of Batman/ Batgirl dynamic duo fighting crime on the streets. But it turned out most of his crime stopping stories were fake.
Black Belt magazine loved him, they really appealed to the sort of person who trains for combat and creeps about all day in a defensive crouch looking for a reason to lash out and harm somebody. A demographic that is unfortunately not small.
