We've been hearing people say for years that AMD graphics card drivers age like fine wine. Does that still apply today?
I asked myself exactly that question and I'll therefore be using the Radeon RX 7900 XTX for this particular test. We'll determine if and how much has changed between the first and most recent drivers. So we're talking of a timeframe between 2022 and 2024.
Meaning, we are looking at a direct comparison between the Adrenalin 22.12.1 and 24.5.1 drivers. I will not only be testing the raw rasterized performance, but also the FSR upscaling and Ray Tracing performance, as well as the power consumption. Has any of it improved or maybe even worsened?
How important are good display drivers? I believe today's video will give us a good insight into that.

What are your thoughts about the result? 🤔😅

  • @badass6300

This is true for Nvidia as well, but the problem is that Nvidia stops giving you performance improvements the moment your GPU is not current generation.

  • @justinpatterson5291

I haven't had my 7900 XT all that long. But, I've seen some stability and frame rate improvements. Not that it was ever slow... I mean, freakin 240Hz 1440p is almost easy for it.

As someone with AMD GPU, i have heard that these drivers suck, but i think what they actually mean is skill issue, because i haven't had driver issues.

  • @mariodrv

    Downvote for the Intel juiceguzzler.

  • @brulaapgaapmeester8052

Not sure about the fine wine thing, remember, wine is rotted grape juice, but as a XTX owner this is good.

I've used exclusively Radeons since my first XFX HD 4870 1GB back in 2008 and I've never been disappointed. I currently have an ASRock RX 7900 XTX Phantom Gaming OC (my first ASRock card) and it's just incredible!

If AMD would fix the shimmering affect FSR creates I might consider using again. The shimmering was so distracting to me, I quickly removed the AMD card and installed in my sons PC, maybe he won’t notice it

  • @UTFapollomarine7409

yea the 7900 xtx is a great card if not ray tracing

  • @laszlodajka5946

    same model same card here.

does anyone notice a significant performance jump between am4 and am5 with an xtx? Im on the fence of jumping on am5

  • @m0dD3rLP

Great idea for a video and well done. I'd be interested to know how much of the performance gains come from driver optimizations and how much comes from higher core clocks. Do you have a way to measure if the core clocks were "enhanced" over time through the drivers? Maybe with HWinfo64 and watch the effective clocks and all that? I don't have an RDNA 3 GPU so I'm not sure of all the various clock metrics that can be measured.

    High quality stuff!

Just looking forward to my Rx 7900 gre

  • @Greenalex89

Great card, runs insanely cool and undervolts like a charm.

  • @mickaelsflow6774

I... didn't expect such an increase in just over a year. That's surprising and very very disappointing in a way. Because yes, that seems to match much more to what they advertised in their first keynote on RDNA3.

  • @ZeppelinEXAhmed

    this was interesting

  • @pituguli5816

Honestly these results are pretty good especially considering the Pulse XTX is over $500 cheaper than the cheapest 4080S here. On release the XTX was 30% faster than a 3090 and now its 40% with the higher tier Vapor X and Taichi variants being a further 10% faster than the other variants so 50% over a 3090 for less than half the price of the release price 3090 is pretty good imo.

I love AMD, but they've really shat the bed with the rx 7000 gpus. Mine at least seems to have lasted a year or so, now I'm getting daily driver hangs on idle for no reason, temps are also out of control. It's going back to the retailer, hopefully get an RMA otherwise I've wasted about 1000€s. Wondering if I should get another amd or bite the bullet and buy nvidia (which I hate due to anti-consumer stuff).
