    I came to comment to tell you that I've watched a ton of Boss RC500 videos and tutorials and you definitely have the majority of useful information. And then when I started looking through the comments I saw how much useful information you continued to add by answering others' seemingly challenging questions. It would be great if you could possibly make some video tutorials for the questions you've answered here if you ever get the time (just easier to understand, of course). But mainly I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH! What a wonderful job you've done -- helping so many of us so much! Cheers!

    Another suggestion I have for this pedal is to try playing some of your more complicated songs and see what problems you run into, and what settings you have to change, and once you iron things out, make a memory with all the desired settings, and write the memory with blank tracks (no loops recorded) so then you have a blank loop with all the right settings and you can write it to all 99 pages as a foundation, so later you don’t have to remember to change all the settings every time you make a new song. I’ve already realized settings that I needed to change, but now that I have my set list programed in, I have to go thru and change the setting 99 times...🙄

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 3 lety +3

      Yeah I do wish there was a way to do them all in one go but maybe it’s designed that way so you don’t do that by accident and wipe out a memory you need. Looking into what you can control with the computer and store etc..
      Maybe something there. 👍🏻

      Easiest way to figure out what the CC numbers are for something generic is to plug it into a computer and use a DAW and press each pedal. The computer and DAW should tell you what the CC numbers are.. then you can write them down and get to using them. Hope that helps. 👍🏻

      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 3 lety

      Hey.
      Is this the IK Multimedia uno drum? it has midi support so I recon yes but you might have to figure out if the Uno has to be in control of the BPM or the RC-500. The RC-500 does send and receive midi clock so if you could make a loop and then it sends the loop BPM to the Uno, your set!

    Very informative and helpful video. I'm new to the RC-500 and have a few questions if you don't mind. Anyone is also welcome to answer if you know, please.
    1. Is there a way (setting) to prevent Rythm from starting each time I hit record? If I ever had it activated on a memory (even if I never saved it- it always comes back on.) I hit the switch to off and the light goes out but it always auto starts again.
    2. Which foot switch or midi-controller is the best for me to buy to expand the capabilities (which is better- Latching or Momentary?) I have a DdigiTech FS3X and a Boss GA-FC controller- not sure if either of those could be used.
    3. Also, the other poster said he accidentally changed settings across all memories or switches. Is there a Global way to save my preferences (volume, rythm type, tempo, etc.) on all memory locations? It's time consuming having to change each one at a time.

      Regarding number 1, have a look at this real quick video - czcams.com/video/aL4TqJLe2qA/video.html
      2. There are loads out there but I personally like the Morningstar midi pedals as well as the Boss FS-7 external pedal.
      3. Regarding global - it’s under the general setup which is ‘Menu - preference’. And you can change pedals per memory or for the whole system.

    @stevemay8443 Před 3 lety +2

    The pedal changing option you demonstrate in single mode seems to work well , I have set the track select button to switch rhythm on or off, can’t seem to overdub on the tracks though to lay down bass or additional guitar parts

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Steve.
      That’s weird.
      You should be able to press the button once to record then once again to play, then once again to overdub. Not triple click but just pressing each time.
      Then hold to clear and double click to stop.

    • @blairswitchproject2347
      @blairswitchproject2347 Před 3 lety +1

      Double check what you set the pedal to, it may be just rec/pla/stop, there might be a different preset that includes overdub, or maybe try the track select button as a all start/stop, and that way the track but to an be rec/pla/dub, and no double tapping to stop the track, just stop with the third switch. It is nice to have a separate rhythm start/stop. This may call for the necessity of a external foot switch controller. There are after market ones that are cheaper than the boss ones, but you need to make sure it’s the right orientation: momentary, normally open? I think that’s right. I recommend Saturn works from California on reverb.

    Hey mate, your content is super detailed and helpful, so thank you!
    I’ve got the RC500 and I’m running it for my acoustic gigs. I currently have the Boss F6 external foot switch that I’ve set up to control my Rhythm on/off.
    Once I’ve recorded a loop over the rhythm, there are situations where I want to stop that guitar loop (eg. for a bridge/chorus chord changes) however once I stop that guitar loop it also stops my Rhythm beat when I’d like that rhythm start/stop to be completely independent of the RC500s stop button and only controlled by my external foot switch. I’ve played around with a heap of settings with no luck so I’m wondering if you have had any experience with being able to do this in your set up?
    I do have a little work-around where I will record my guitar loop on track 1 then switch to track 2 press record for a few seconds to record nothing and then once this ‘nothing track’ is continually running I can go back to track 1 and stop it when I need to and the rhythm will keep playing as the ‘nothing track 2’ is playing in the background. So it’s fine but if there is a way where I don’t have to record that track 2 of nothing then that would be ideal. Any tips from yourself or anyone who reads this comment running the RC500 would be awesome!
    Anyway keep up the awesome content!
    Cheers

      to solve your issue you need to do the following, (which is per patch/memory btw):
      Press Memory > scroll to RHYTHM > scroll to START - change setting to BEFORE LOOP (this will make the drums start when pressing REC/PLAY and then get a feel for the groove and just press REC/PLAY again to start recording.)
      Write this to the memory.
      Then go to MEMORY>RHYTHM>STOP and change this to OFF. It's defaulted to LOOP STOP and it's THIS setting that making it stop when you press the actual stop button cause you are telling the RC500 to stop whatever you are looping AND the rhythm section (does that make sense?).
      Write this to the memory.
      So that little bit has taken care of the stopping, now you just need to assign the FS-6 to start and stop the rhythm and write that to the memory as well and you should be good to go.
      Hope this helps.
      Let me know how you get on and if it works, share my page with loads of people. 👍

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Jeff. So you wouldn’t use the midi in, just use the CTRL / EXP to do this and you just need to use an assign.
      Go to memory, scroll across to Assign. Use one (let use assign 1).
      Turn it on, have the source as EXP PEDAL.
      SRC MODE should be MOMENT
      TARGET will be T1 level
      The set your min and max level.
      That’s Track 1 done, now use Assign 2 and do EXACTLY the same but change the target to Track 2 and set your levels.
      That way it doesn’t matter which one you are on, the volumes will be adjusted on both tracks.
      Alternatively you can just ONE assign and set the Target to CUR LEVEL and they will control the level of the track you have selected.
      Up to you.
      Hope that’s helps.

    Great vid! I tried the assignment for memory up/down but the problem is that you CAN'T save your loops on the go, so at the moment you switch memory the previous loops are gone... not really usefull for 4 tracks looping.

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 2 lety +1

      You are correct László, the saving is per memory so what you can do is save the memory up/down to both memory slots and then it will remember it.
      Yes if you move up and down a memory without saving you will loose it. Shame I know. Good for presaged material thou.

      Hey Don. Yeah, so to stop the loops, you can do that in a couple of ways. If you have it like a one button looper, it’s like an RC-5 where you double tap to stop but there are other options too. For the Drums to continue, just just need to go into the rhythm section and turn off the stop. Go to 2mins 40 secs on this video and I explain the start and stop options there. 👍🏼

      I have the same issue with mic volume and I happen to use the Bose S1 also, but I don’t think this is the issue. I think it’s just not that high output. One way around this, is to adjust the other levels. Like bring down the rhythm volume and use that as the foundation, then when the mic and drums are balanced, you can push the S1 to desired vol. the trick is then the instrument level. Try recording a loop and see how loud it is compared to the drums, and adjust the input of the instrument into the rc500. A way to balance is to have the loop and rhythm coming out of outputB and guitar and instruments out of output A. You can adjust your instrument to match the loop levels, and push the channel for output A to make up for the loss of volume input to match the mic.. this is weird sounding I know... it’s a little tricky

      Press the MEMORY button and go to PLAY. Change the PLAY MODE from multi to single and then the next option is SINGLE CHANGE. This specifies how the tracks will be switched when PLAY MODE is “SINGLE.” It’s set to IMMEDIATE by default. Change it to LOOP END.
      Now save that to the memory and now you can press the switch at any time and it will switch at the end of the loop.

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před rokem

      Ahhh well firstly T3 P/S will depend on what track you have last selected. Watch the blinking light on the tracks underneath the faders. Which ever one you are on, that’s what it is controlling.
      To not have overdub so you don’t have to double tap, change the T1 and T2 pedals to. PLY/STP. If there is no recording of a loop there, when you first hit the track, it will go into record then play, then you can play and stop when you like but you cannot overdub.
      Alternatively, get an external pedal like an FS-6 or the new FS-1-WL and program that up to be T1 & T2 stop.

    • @insidethemani9852
      @insidethemani9852 Před 2 lety

      @@RobOstrander Me too! This is crucial to the verse/chorus scenario. It doesn't look like you can assign VARIATION A to track 1 and VARIATION B to track 2. This means the only way to achieve this is: Memory 1 = VARIATION A (verse) and Memory 2 = VARIATION B (chorus). This then means that because you have to shift Memory patches, when you return to Memory 1 for the 2nd verse, what you recorded live hasn't been recorded. To achieve this, you'd have to write the recording to Memory 1 once you've finished looping it live. If I've understood this correctly (and I hope I haven't), then this is a HUGE FLAW in how the pedal operates. Basically, you'd have to have verse on track 1 and chorus on track 2 but WITH THE SAME DRUM PATTERN. Doesn't make sense. PLEASE someone correct me!

    Hello again. The pattern variation process works great. I am have rc 600 and rc 500 connected together. It works amazing to combine those and get even more rhythm variation. The rc 500 rhythm variation with a FS 7 or FS 6 pedal works great. I also want to vary the rhythm pattern using the same process and that's driving me crazy. sometimes it works but much of the time it reassigns the main pattern to blank. so when you press the foot switch the rhythm turns off. example, I have the main pattern as simple beat one. I would like to do a rhythm variation between simple beat 1 and simple beat 4. It usually works once and then stops because it has reassigned the main pattern to blank. Have you run into this?

      No but this sounds like a conflict. Do you have the RC-500 and RC-600 setup via midi? Is the RC-500 and RC-600 on the same midi channel? If so, the 500 could be sending a program change or Control change to the 600 to tell it to change the rhythm?

      Hey 👋
      So if I’m reading this correctly, then you would be changing the rhythm with the buttons like on the RC-10R?
      This is not like the RC-10R in that respect and the buttons are setup in such a way for 2 tracks of looping, Reuther in single mode (like an A&B on the 10r) or in Multi mode (play together) which is the default.
      The rhythm is separate and can be controlled with external pedals or re-programming the main 3.
      The rhythm is not the same system as the RC-10R and has different behaviours.

    Yup, the record end setting made a huge difference for me. I just practiced Recording w/o rhythm all evening. Thx! Also, it’s great to know about seamless sequencing of song parts across phrase memories. I’ll save that one until I’ve got some rudiments nailed. Two questions: 1) if you were going to buy a midi controller, are there three or four units you would seriously consider? and 2) do the track volume slider positions matter when recording? And related to this, do you know if the RC-500 has an (unpublished) unity gain setting that we can target for best signal-to-noise ratio? I’ve never gotten a clear answer on this last question for Boss Loopers.

      Hey Adam 👋
      Oh that’s great.
      So regarding your questions:
      1) the Harley Benton midi pedal is a good, cheap shout and a lot of people have success with it. m.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_mp_100_midi_foot_controller.htm?o=12&search=1616925235
      I would always say the ‘Tesla’ of Midi pedals is MorningStar. I have the MC8 and it’s brilliant.
      2) the volume sliders don’t matter when recording. There is a separate volume control if you click the track button underneath the slider and scroll through.
      3) oooh... interesting - Click the input button and scroll through till you find Mic/Inst In NS - there is a suppressor built into the pedal which does make a difference to the recording / volume.
      I will dig (probably very deep) on this last question - mainly cause it will bug me if I don’t know 😆

      The only way you're going to get a true stereo sound is by inputting everything, in stereo, into something like a mixer and send the main L&R output of that mixer to the looper.

    A question regarding pedal control settinfs:
    I successfully am able to change my pedal control settings as you demonstrated in the video, and I am saving them to a memory slot using the write function. Not what I want. I want different pedal control settings in different memory slots

BUT then when I scroll back to memory2 it has the pedal control settings that I made for memory3. Super frustrating! Download the parameter guide and in there it talks about outputs and routing - page 14.
      Press the input button, then scroll past mic and instrument and you will get to rhythm.
      You can set the rhythm to output a or b or even loop and record it as a loop itself.
      Hope that helps 👍🏼

    Please somebody explain how you can assign different rhythms one to each track when you have the RC500 in single mode and you're using each track as Verse and Chorus. Thanks.

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 3 lety

      So you can’t change the rhythms for each track. They have a variance A & B but you can’t have a completely different rhythm or kit on the same memory.
      BUT.. The way round it is to program 2 memories beside each other.. let’s say memory 1 & 2.
      Memory one would be your verse and memory 2 would be your chorus.
      You can then set different rhythms, BPM’s and kits if you with and then either program one of the three buttons to be memory up/down or use something like an FS6 / 7 to be men up or down or a midi pedal.
      When you are playing memory 1 and hit the button to go up a memory, it will play either instantly or at the end of the loop.. so you can make different versions.. it just has to be a bit more work.
      Hope that makes sense?

    Any way to assign the rhythm to play only through output A or B? I run a dual mono setup, Input A (guitar) plays back through Output A and Input B (Bass) plays back through Output B but the rhythm plays through both outputs.

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey 👋
      Yes you can you have to go through the input button on the far right of the RC500 and there you can dictate what happens with the ins and outs of the XLR, the A/B inputs and outputs and the rhythm. So scroll to rhythm and you can pick OUT A&B (which is what it is defaulted to), OUT-A, OUT B, LOOP, or OFF.
      Hope this helps. 👍🏻

    Really useful video!
    I have a couple of really (I would think) fundamental questions:
    1) When naming/renaming a track is it possible to just clear the name rather than having to work backwards a character at a time? This is one of several time consuming 'creativity killers' for me.
    2) How do you switch between Rhythm Variations A and B? Must his be assigned to a foot switch? Can’t see an option.
    Thanks in advance.

    • @MrRollDotHome
      @MrRollDotHome Před 3 lety +1

      Am I missing something really basic here? It seem to rename a memory one must select each character and scroll to clear individually? Is there no way to highlight and clear the name in one go?

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 3 lety +1

      1) You have to clear a name one memory at a time - but if you give the memory value button a click when you are naming the memory, you can then scroll through the word without having to erase everything and start again.
      2) yes you have to assign it to one of the three pedals or an external.

      not on the device but you can when being plugged into a computer and sync

      @@JohnPaulMusicUKThanks for the reply. So for each character of a name it must be selected and then scroll through the alphabet to the blank space, click and then repeat for every letter? Seems a bit longer winded but if that’s the way it is then I’ll stop liking and get used to it.

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 3 lety +1

      Haha, yeah it’s still like that I’m afraid but it’s not the end of the world. At least we HAVE the option of names unlike in the rc-30.
      This seems to be the generic Name system across most of Boss’ new pedals.
      C’est la vie.

    When I’m setting up the second track the loop won’t stop recording/looping right away until it gets to the end of the bar. Is there a way to stop this or do you have to play exactly in time with your first loop?
    I thought they were supposed to be separate help plz

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes you can change this.
      Head I to the Memory menu and have a look at Rec. There should be an option for instant recording and check you haven’t got settings as ‘loop end’.
      They are independent, yes.

      @@JohnPaulMusicUK I don’t have that option in Memory/REC menu. I also tried factory reset and it’s doing the same thing. Track 2 will only start its loop until track 1s loop gets back to bar 1

    The REC END functions doesn’t work - drum beats starts right when I hit record - isn’t it supposed to start the rhythm when I hit play back - what am i doing wrong?

    • @qujo777
      @qujo777 Před 2 lety +1

      Never mind - i think i figured out - track 1 needs to be on loop s. On and tempo sync on - track 2 needs to be loop s. On and tempo S off - i think its started working. I guess i changed the settings not knowing that it would disable the drum temp sensing.
