Over 4 hours is the EXACT proper amount of time for an AM discussion! Maybe even 6 hours! Who can really tell when the content is jam packed with such great information.
I actually genuinely like Napoleon as a general and as an Emperor, and definitely prefer his often overt Caesarism to the many confusions of the Republic and intervening years since King Louis XVI was executed. Even if people posthumously still see him as an upstart, a dictator, or an illegitimate tyrant; his dynasty is certainly very legitimate now. Jean-Christophe, Prince Napoléon recently married Countess Olympia von und zu Arco-Zinneberg, a Habsburg heiress. The Bonaparte dynasty has long been marrying into European royalty so they apparently are a very respectable and desirable family for many dynasts, even for those who maintain Morganatic rules.
The meritocratic emperor and empire. A synthesis of the old and new.

I'm currently reading War and Peace, it's not as difficult as I had feared but the most difficult aspect for me is understanding the historical background/references. Lucky for me that I have just come across these shows. I understand the context of the novel much more than I did only a few weeks ago. Thanks for these!
15:45 Napoleon surname history is kinda blurry since centuries ago people reserved a lot less attention to how you write words, especially names. Sometimes you see it wrote as "Buonaparte", which is specifically Italian, and sometimes as "Bonaparte", both meaning "Good Part".
Also in Italy there's a joke that translates to:
"People say Napoleon conquered all of Europe, but the truth is that it was just a buonaparte (a good part)".
u Italian?
Italian Dad’s must love telling that joke 🙄
Extremely good stream
Excellent stream - Very informative for those still hazy on major events in Napoleonic history. Cheers!
I would say the "-parte" means "part" as in portion of land, or a place. So, not Buonaparte as "the good segment or section of someTHING" but rather "good spot, site or locale". In English, when we "depart" don't we leave a place ? That's the idea. Hope this makes any sense.
Hello, I happened upon your channel a little while ago and want to thank you for your content. I have a deep passion for history and find you and your colleagues engaging. I don't agree with everything presented but sincerely hope you continue this work.
Sounds a bit like a total war player with them becoming increasingly shoddy as they lose interest over the campaign.
45:00 "amateurs talk about tactics, professionals talk about logistics "
On Britain paying for its war efforts, big ship go to indies with lots of guns, big ship come back with lots of spice, big ship make lots of money.
34:20 France and Italy are brothers
Why wouldn’t Napoleon try to defeat Portugal/Wellington post establishment of continental system using the full strength of la Grande Armee? Seems like that would be the best way to attain a peace settlement with Britain on relatively favorable terms.
Britain kept sending armies into Germany or holland so French armies stayed mostly north of the Pyrenees
😍👍❤👍👏
Hey AM, are you still working on a history course for the academic agency? I hope so!
58:00 There is no such mention of Adolphus on David's painting.
I’m an hour an 52 minutes in and I thought you guys were going to talk “grand strategy” but you’re basically just recapping some highlights of the Napoleonic wars. Thought you would get into why Napoleon annexes this state or vassalizes that? France’s traditional grand strategy vs what Napoleon goes for and achieves. The continental system. Colonial policy, diplomacy etc etc
We cover all of that?!
Video is broken?
At 0:04, I think I may have just saw Putin
xD
Bloody hell! Eh... Spitting Image.

A grand strategy of LOSING, that was Napoleonic France.
Really? Was your research restricted to Napoloen;s own press releases? The Army of Italy was composed of successful veterans ( and reinforced from troops from Spain. It has also recently been paid (regardless of Napoleon;s speech) Nor did Napoleon share the roughs of campaign (please look beyond the cult of personality statements around Napoloen.) And Napoleon was funded ans supported by Directory that other commanders were not. He was a political favorite parachuted in command over many more successful and experienced generals. And troops not being paid poor supplies, lack of shore was almost de rigor. What evidence do you have that the Austrians were any better supplied? And The Rhine was the primary front thought the war of the 1st coalition, It hand more troops throughout the war and it was where the war was decided. Again why take Napoloen;s word for this stuff.? Savoy was already in negotiations to expect the war, the Austrian commander had been warned that indeed they might indeed chnage sides totally. And the Austrian field army was half the size of Napoleon;'s field army. One sided without any attempt at delving beyond the legend.
If you honestly think that we are Napoleon hagiographers please watch beyond the first 30 mins.
