It's 2021. This show is almost 65 years old, and it is as fresh, and new, and exciting today as it was when this video was made 12 years ago, and when Kert and Lawrence sang and danced on Broadway in 1957. I don't think calling it a classic does it justice. This is a masterpiece of theater. Somehow, I don't think anyone will be humming tunes from "Hamilton" in 6 months, much less 65 years from now.
It's still the greatest and perhaps also the most original (both for its time and maybe for all time) Broadway musical and film; it doesn't show it's age one bit though by saying so, maybe it shows my own age! Anyway, this is terrific.
Now this is how West Side Story's America should be. The Movie Version of the song was great as well but the original is mostly better. Yet I can't say that everyone will agree. Still, both versions are good. Preferred the Original Lyrics though. It keeps the Funny yet Serious Vibe and emotion of the song.
Fun fact: Sondheim actually originally wrote “America” as a boys vs. girls dance number. Jerome Robbins made him change it for the stage version. But, when making the movie, they changed it back to boys vs. girls. So the movie version is technically the original version. And Sondheim has stated many times that he vastly prefers the movie version.
@@stefannydvorak7919 I like the movie version a billion times better than this. I hope Spielberg doesn't do it like it's done here. Not as good at all. (don't get me wrong, the DWTS version is fine . . . but fine isn't outstanding, and the film version was outstanding.
This is the version I heard for years and was shocked when I heard the film version. It loses one of the best things which is the call and response format between two sides, one romantic view of Puerto Rico and one cynical view. The lyrics are better too, although the parts about doors slamming and shoe shining in the film version are very clever
I feel like the watered the dancing down! If you look at the Debbie Allen version it’s so much faster and she’s doing much more difficult dance stuff especially at the end of the number this sort of lacked some umph.
Yes! AND, this revival she was in has new Spanish lyrics for some of the songs, provided by In The Heights's creator and original Usnavi(and now creator and star of Hamilton as well), Lin Manuel Miranda!
@sjkernes09 It's etiquette to clap after a number, not during to the point where you can barely hear what's happening during a number. You find this mostly with Wicked fangirls. I understand that this isn't exactly the case with this performance, but that's mostly because it's in a TV studio and professionally filmed, in an actual theatre it's a different case. Also, I have been doing professional theatre for nearly 10 years and have been in the ensemble for some of Australia's biggest shows.
@Gamerguy3379 it's not the amateur theatre that's the issue, i'm talking broadway shows where the fangirls have gotten out of control.. shows such as wicked, spring awakening, legally blonde, next to normal.. even a little night music was the same..
Well, not bad, I just like America better with the Shark Girls, led by Anita, defending America, and the Shark Boys, led by Bernardo, yearning for Puerto Rico.
Ok people...Why are you all piss hurt that the audience is clapping during the song. It's how the show their appreciation for what was happing at that moment. Also you all think that you're professional technicians I bet most of you are not pro or even been behind the scenes of a broadway show. The western theatre etiquette tells us to clap something we find good or amazing.
@clarinetisgreat i wasn't just talking about live television audiences, theatre audiences are exactly the same.. applauding and squealing at inappropriate times.
@fashionglindaguru it wasnt only karen olivio it was....some of the cast so why would she only say her name?that wouldnt make sense and it wouldnt be nice to her casst member who performed with her
I first saw West Side Story in 1967... At A Drive In ... I think they Girls Did a Great Job. However, There's No Male Challenge to the debate about America. I Think that completes the meaning of the scene... JMO...
P.S. It sucks Without The Males... Where were The Males!!! Also, I think the lead is Over Acting... You Must Remember, They're just Friends, Hanging out, Talking about America and their Mother Country...

Why do you think no one will be humming tunes from Hamilton 6 months from now? I saw it on broadway in 2015 and still am humming the songs from it!
Karen Olivo= AMAZING!!!! Live and recorded! even in person!!!!! love her!
It's still the greatest and perhaps also the most original (both for its time and maybe for all time) Broadway musical and film; it doesn't show it's age one bit though by saying so, maybe it shows my own age!
Anyway, this is terrific.
I saw this front row after Karen won her Tony. It was beyond outstanding. The level of talent.
Wow Samantha Harris was beautiful then in 2009 and is still lovely in 2023.💕
KAREN OLUVO KILLS EVERYTHING SHE DOEEEESS #QUEEN
WE LOVE OUR QUEENS
I always liked how the movie changed it with maria's brother singing, maybe because i saw the movie before any play version.
Karen Olivo is HOT!!!! Love the way she performs in this song!
I much prefer the movie version with the guys. OMG George Chakiris.
Karen is absolutely amazing
I'm so glad they stuck with the original broadway version of the song. It's sooo much better imo.
They were great
i know...that picture at 2:40 !!! the way the camera zooms in is amazing!
Karen Olivo- what a goddess!
WOW just WOW
Karen olive is amazing...

@@LuvTadnDixie the Spielberg film doing it with the boys and girls
I'm with you! I like the song batter as bickering between the girls as opposed to the "banter between the sexes." No thank you!

Rosalie is so cute

Enjoyed that one
Amazing camera work!!!!!
almost a capella....amazing!
AWESOMEEEEEE
Now they’ll probably have the cast of the remake film performing on the show next season
Is that Karen from In The Heights?! 0.o
Yes!

Bravo
karen olivo is amazing! :)

I admire their Courage.. It Was wonderful.. However, No one has yet to Touch Rita.. JMO...

@sjkernes09 I can't expect much from the audience of Dancing With the Stars.
@JWeb4U I couldn't agree more
Well, not bad, I just like America better with the Shark Girls, led by Anita, defending America, and the Shark Boys, led by Bernardo, yearning for Puerto Rico.

that's why i said ALMOST a capella.
In the show it's only the women; that's what they're doing here.
Go ahead Karen!!!!!! Aye!!
@clarinetisgreat i wasn't just talking about live television audiences, theatre audiences are exactly the same.. applauding and squealing at inappropriate times.
@artcream530 Had a feeling. She sounded familiar.
@naomi444 because americans are easily entertained.. hence the success of dancing with the stars

i wear hearing aids, thanks very much. not technically deaf but i have severe hearing problems, i've had hearing aids since i was 2. sooo....
KAREN
wrf
Correction: I Meant The Girls... My Bad...
ok, am i gonna have to explain this over and over again? i said ALMOST. i could barely hear the music!
Debbie Allen did it best.
Karen is a very good dancer, but NEVER be close to Chita Rivera, the real Anita
wasnt Rita Moreno the first Anita???
@@IslandGirl-nt6ry nope. Rita was the 1961 movie Anita. Chita Rivera played Anita in 1957 in the Broadway play.

commonman80 um this is the original way it was written, west side story was a musical before it was a movie...
Chita Rivera and Debbie Allen's crew are 10TIMES better look them up. This dancing is watered down and there is no POP!
Don't agree
This isn't as good as it is with the men.
P.S. It sucks Without The Males... Where were The Males!!! Also, I think the lead is Over Acting... You Must Remember, They're just Friends, Hanging out, Talking about America and their Mother Country...
commonman80 this is how it was originally done you dumb shit
bad version , original movie the best
this is how its been done since 1951
But in the movie en 1961 was a great perfomance .
+Julio Cesar true
Bitch fight me, Karen Olivo slays
HELL YEAH
Those accents ARE horrible
