2nd test of new Drift HD170 Stealth camera, camera mounted on helmet and external mic clipped onto shirt. Much more stable video than with direct motorcycle frame mount.
oh that's cool. I was never in LE but i bet that would be an experience to say the least! The biggest bike I had ridden prior to this one was an old Yamaha 750 .. so the KZ was a bit of a shock with the weight and center of gravity being so high. but now that i'm used to it i love it .. you can really sling it around when you want to. of course hearing the bike do its thing always reminds me of watching "Chips" when i was younger. love the sound.
yes, i would now ... i used to have a big problem with vibration coming through the handlebars and making my wrists go numb..but finally fixed it now so its usable for long rides. super comfortable bike to ride- has a giant seat, fairing pushes the wind away from your body and the running boards feel great for your feet..it really is designed for allday use by the rider. it gets about 40-45mpg around the city.
Yes the key chain does say "Remove Before Flight" ! I used to fly planes and collected that along the way. The bike came with an Ammeter on the left and Voltmeter on the right. They came from the police dept. like that. I also have an original GE Ranger radio head unit that i am going to reinstall on the handlebar.
(in order) first i changed the sprockets to reduce rpm at speed, then i put foam hand grips on, then Vibranator bar end weights, then replaced all rubber engine mounts ... all of those helped a little but unexpectedly the thing that made a huge difference was mounting an original GE radio control box to the handlebar mount- that took out all of the vibration. admittedly this is not for everyone but i guess a 3 pound piece of aluminum will do the trick!
I try to ride this one to work about once a week. Maintenance is easy with the books..i seem to have to synch the carbs twice a year to keep it happy. A 1" shorter windshield would be nice but I paid for this one so its a matter of principal now.
as an after market item, no. i know some owners fit the dual seats from other Kawasaki models...i have also seen some homemade seats out there..the best resource i have is seen is the Yahoo groups "KZ1000P Kawasaki Police Motorcycle Forum" - there are lots of pictures and advice on common problems and of course you can ask any question you want. i highly recommend it for you since you own one of these bikes.
yeah, i understand very little was changed over the 24 years they made this model. i get a fair number of comments from people when i ride it around town.
All police bikes have that sound, not just Kawasaki. My understanding has always been these bikes are equipped with very quiet exhaust pipes that give it that "jetson" sound
In my case someone gutted the back of the mufflers out so its louder than it should be ... the small microphone plugged into the camera gets distorted easily. it sounds "good" in real life (throaty) but that said i'm not a big fan of loud bikes. if new ones didn't cost $700 i would replace them.
I'm thinking about buying one of these. On some videos these bikes sound throaty and loud while on others it sounds almost like a winding/whistling. Do microphones not give these bikes justice? What's your opinion?
extremely nice. how did you manage to eliminate wind-blowing sounds ? You managed to capture the so typical sound of these engines !!! Drive a European Z1000-A1 myself.
+erik au Sorry for super late reply Erik, I suppose because it was an external mic clipped to my shirt which is behind the fairing. The bike is even quieter now that i replaced the mufflers with stock, undrilled ones.
well, i know a few things can make a whining sound on these bikes, the chain/sproket can do it, the timing chain and the transmission...hadn't heard the exhaust whine thing before ..maybe the air reed valves that put oxygen in the exhaust?
usnixon I believe mine was the cam chain tensioner . I replaced it with a manual one and the bike quieted down a lot. Unrelated but fixed after this video was the exhaust pipes. The old ones were bored out by a previous owner.. the new ones are a lot easier on my hearing. I am going to replace the starter clutch soon just to see what that will do. Over-all its been a great bike. I ride it to work every now and then and it hasn't let me down.
I have one of these. Mine's an '88 KZ1000-P. You have an interesting way of mounting it. I have fairly short legs and tend to round house kick my leg over the radio box and then seat. How's your pursuit lights? Are they hooked up? If so, do you have them hooked up to the proper switch, and if so, does your pursuit light come on? I ask because I use mine for security guard work, and I need to get my lights all hooked up properly. Right now I have an array of after market switches glued onto the dashboard on the fairing.
LOL If by interesting you mean non-standard i can only say i'm an 'amateur' at this bike. I know leo's are taught to get on the bike via the high side but I don't like how that feels. I do have the blue & red pursuit lights (old Whelen strobes) mounted on the front but they are not hooked -up. I have newer clear lens led pursuit lights (with white leds) as well and those I actually set to constant on and used them like super bright high beams. They were hooked up to the proper switches. I also have the Whelen strobe amplifier box in the rear that they hook up to .. the new leds lights dont need that and draw a LOT less power. The newer pursuit lights are programmed when you install them so you can sync them together or leave them independent. I've installed or reinstalled all the lights and its not hard .. just a pain to work in the cavity of the headlight for some wiring. When i first got the bike i had a new wiring harness installed so connecting the lights and switches was color-coded and easy with the schematics. But i like the look of the colored lenses better. When i don't feel like getting behind folks doing 5 under the speed limit (i'm sure you experience this to) , i have gray cups that cover them up. With the colored lenses I admit i'm a bit chicken to hook them up in case i get stopped (although its never happened and not sure that would matter). I actually have the blue Whelen pole light for the rear but haven't installed it yet. I plan to though.
@@KFuzz001 I can't figure out the wiring to the pursuit switch. All I know is it's green and white, but it's not hooked up to anything and I don't even know if mine is snipped at the controls or not. They did a real butcher job on it and I've since had to replace the fairing with one from California and it has all the stock wires intact but they split off into nonstandard colors of wires that are snipped. I'm so confused.
i think they are a bad ass bike really ..this guy riding the bike on this video was haling some ass a few times it has some speed ..more speed and power then some people give it credit for
I guess you're referring to the whine? That's the transmission on these bikes, common sound. Listen to any episode of CHiPs and you'll see what I mean.
How the hell tall are you? I have one of those bikes, I'm considered exceptionally tall, I can see over the windshield easily even i slouch a little, like I have to make a concerted effort to have bad posture to not see over it... your camera looks to be about eye height, and it looks like you'd be incapable of not having turbulence right in your eye holes... Just how tall are you anyway?
super late reply .. 6feet ... the windshield is not the original ...its a Clearview.. maybe that's the difference? also this windshield has a little lip at the end that deflects the air over your head fairly well.
@@KFuzz001 Thanks. I'm still a bit freaked out by how much higher your camera sits above the windshield... but I guess the extra 6 inches taller than me accounts for that :)
@@BerryTheBnnuy i guess so .. the camera is mounted 1/2 way up my helmet. basically eye level. if i slouch, the windshield edge is in my way .. if i sit up straight i'm looking about an inch above it. They sell that windshield in 2 heights .. i have is the taller one.
Gary Stratton You may be right since 1. it doesn't always catch right away and 2. it one of the few parts I haven't replaced yet! (sorta jk) I can say that when I filmed those 2 videos my timing chain was very loose. I put in a manual adjuster and it quieted right down. I'm just finishing the rebuild of the carbs and i'll look at that starter clutch when putting it back together.
well, i think you were right .. i had to replace those 3 cams and the plate that holds them was a little warped .. now it grabs and releases very nicely. now the freaking clutch is giving me fits .. oh well. always was a project bike for me.
Nice ride, nice bike. Thanks for taking us along.
I like watching you drive and the area you live in is very nice..good scenery..
I rode an '89 as a Motorcop. Thanks for reminding me what a great bike it was.

look-up Clearview Shields, they have them in different lengths. The one i got from them is good quality.
thanks for the info on the windshield. Do you know anyone that makes a rear seat for this bike ?
