Knifemaking & Leatherworking - Forging an Integral San Mai Frontier Knife

- This knife is not for sale due to a tiny delamination shown at 24:13
My second integral knife ever if you count the funky titanium one I made 2-3 years ago. In any case this was a great learning experience as I decided to try and up it a bit by making it a San mai blade as well. Turned out pretty nice but I would've liked a thicker and especially wider bolster (the integral part of the handle) as it does leave a bit to be desired when gripping the knife closer to the blade for a firmer grip.
Thanks for watching!

You renewed your workshop. Congratulations..👏🏻👏🏻
Moved to canada. Renting a place.
That my friend is a thing of beauty!!👍
Very awesome, having an integral bolster is one thing, its another to have one with a forged finish, and keeping the high carbon bit centered as well?
That makes it that much more impressive
And it takes some guts to show off the one little flaw that is neither detrimental nor easily visible
Beautiful, I make this stuff too, I haven't forged any knives, I make mine from raw metal or saw blades, but I've made a ton of leather goods, holsters and pouches and everything, you did a great job on both, you should be proud
Thank you very much! Always room for improvement :)
Omg, you redid the frontier knife, thank you, iv been waiting for you to do this blade since you got your new forge
You're very welcome :) Thank you!
Cool technique. Turned out great.
Even though it has a delamination, I would definitely buy it man!! Its just gorgeous
There will be some more simple and cheaper models in about 2 weeks time I think. Thank you very much!
Nice frontier knife and sheath
The knives are getting better every time! Great job! Well done! 👍 If I lived nearby, I would definitely order such a knife.
Thank you! there will be simple and cheaper frontier styles knives to come in about 2 weeks time hopefully :)
@@MakeNCreate We will wait for a video about them! 👍🙂

Thank you mate!
Real craft! Soo niece
Thank you!
Very nice! ive yet to finish a full tang integral but right now its almost exclusively integrals on my bench haha
Haha yeah been seeing that! They looks so clean, you're killing it! Thank you Liam.
You answered a question I’ve had for along time can you do a full tang integral knife. Thank you
Nice work bro 😊👍
Thank you Marek :)
Slavic Smith Illya would approve of your method of san mai! Nice job.
Inspiring
happy to hear so :)
It's great knife...
Thank you!
Been loving your craft, picked up knifemaking myself. Question, how thick is the leather you use for your sheaths?
Good video
Thanks!
I love the knife you sold me! Noticing your blades are thick, do you think if you went thinner you could make larger blades?
Thank you very much! Good to hear some response :) Very much so! I use the exact same construction method for my chef knives with the same amount of starting material. Only difference is I just draw It out more. This one was made thick as it's more of a bush knife that should able to withstand some rough treatment.
che estan re zarpados tus videoossss
I love how you always show off all the blemishes and things that didn't turn out so great. That's a pretty amazing viable speed belt sander :)
How many folks work out of that shop you're in?
Thank you very much! Just 1 more, the guy I rent from :)
Awesomesauce
Indeed,
Very nice indeed. Wich stell did you used for the blade?
It says in the video. 1075. Thank you
Молодец!. Можешь! Лайк!
Pretty cool. I'm terrible at forge welding.
So was I before I moved to this workshop. Half of it is really just having a good forge that can reach the temperatures evenly throughout the piece to start with. Thank you!
@@MakeNCreate Yeah I agree. I think mine can reach that temp, I'm just too scared to crank it up that high.
Hello,
I want to say a big congratulations to you, because starting from nothing and finishing with a real artisanal knife, it's just great. I start cutlery and learn a lot to test afterwards. Could you tell me which product you are using at time 12'13, in order, and why?
cordially
Xavier
Thank you very much! The acid I used to etch the knife is ferric chloride diluted with water.
@@MakeNCreate Thank you for your reply. So you clean your blade, then soak it in acid to blacken it (how long?), then you block the acid by cleaning it again with a glass cleaner? to rub it afterwards. that's right

What coel are u using
Since when do you use a power hammer???
Not sure what part I like more.... the forging or the leatherwork.
Appreciate it :)
Well a little bit sad cause your using power tools now....I kinda prefer your old forging style, but your still good😊😊😊
Mind if I ask where you get your leather working tools and supplies?
Bought It online from a leather store think it was tandy leather. However if you're willing to wait you can save a ton by buying it directly from china on ebay as it's literally the exact same tools they sell, difference being it's way cheaper.
@@MakeNCreate Thanks much. Excellent work by the way.
Here's one for the algorithm
Is that an Old Hickory forge hammer?
Yes it is! John was very kind and sent me three of them as a welcome to north America package as I just moved to canada.
@@MakeNCreate That is awesome! I recognized it because I have the same hammer, I have nothing but good things to say about the guy. Big fan of your work and I enjoy watching and learning.
@@jameslogan1058 John is awesome! Thank you!
Nooo falopa nooo
Soy tu fan de argentina
Woah when you get a power hammer?
Moved to canada. Renting a shop that has two :) this is the small one.
How long does it take you to make that
Usually when I'm filming a project like this I work on other stuff In between so thick took me maybe around 5-6 days. Without filming 3 days.
Virkelig en flot kniv 😁 Holder du smedekursus ??
Haha, hvis du kommer til Canada ;) Tak skal du have!
Nå ja det havde jeg lige glemt 😂
How do you keep the knife from rust
Keep it dry. It's not that hard.
@@MakeNCreate i do but it still start to rust

Jesus loves you, and His return is close, repent for the kingdom of God is at hand.
We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, He will judge us, and all are guilty. But Christ died for you, to wash your sins clean, He offers hope to the hopeless and salvation to the lost. If you are struggling, come to Christ, if you are lost, seek His face, He is waiting for you. Repent and put your faith in Jesus.

I dont like you using a pneumatic hammer. Its not right.....
Why is it not right? if it helps me work faster and put out more content and provide a product sell then I don't see any reason why I should shoot myself in the foot by spending hours exhausting myself by using a hand hammer and having to burn more coal.
@@MakeNCreate I've enjoyed watching you do it the hard way for a few years now. Dont take anything i say too personally, im just some schmuck on the internet. But, that was a big appeal for me, was the old methods, old foot powered forge, and the way you sped up your hammering. To me, it was uniquely you. Plus, the powered hammer takes more of the human out of it. Again, this is all just some schmuck electrician perspective. So, dont take it to heart. Id certainly ignore people telling me how to use what tools i choose. Original comment was purely a troll and being a negative nancy about change. I still enjoy your stuff regardless, but always respect those who sling a real hammer more than those who use a big fucking machine to do it for them.
Anyways, continue doing you.
@@demonsmokr I definitely will. Thank you
Why ????
@@laforgedilmarinenferronner7444 I just really like the way he does his hammering speed ups and slowdowns. Pneumatic hammers are cool because they work great, i personally just like things old fashioned. Pneumatic hammer is too high tech.
I think your normalizing is a wee bit hot.
