Was buying a used Cadillac SRX a mistake?

  • Since I bought my 2012 Cadillac SRX earlier this year, I have had a number or problems with it. I had to address few issues on the SRX days after taking delivery of my car.
Watch my video to learn what the problems were and if I think buying a 2012 Cadillac SRX with 92k miles was a mistake. Keep in mind this is not a review, but summary of the issues. I will do a review in the future.

Summary: Exhaust manifold leak that was fixed by the dealership. All other problems caused by the owner trying to install aftermarket stuff, which interfered with the electronic sensors. Saved you 18 minutes. You're welcome.

Three years ago I took my Cadi SRX 2016 to the dealer for service. Before taking it I stopped by a friends shop and he put my car on a machine and told me I had NO codes showing. So I took it in to the dealership. I was told that I needed a thermostat and that it would cost 1700 dollars. I asked what was the difference in the machines used to test for these things and made them aware that I had it checked before coming in.
I was told that I was accusing their staff of wrongdoing and that they did not want to service my vehicle anymore. Shocking.
More shocking is that this was three years ago and I never got a new thermostat. 👀
Cadillac is a great car. If you stay away from their service centers.

I definitely believe that I had that happen to me in a new 200c some years back & I had already checked the code it was a sensor stopping my fan & made the vehicle shut dwn to avoid damage!.. pregnant w/and hubby over seas vet they lied 🤥 about charges of $900
& when I asked the part as proof oh it in a giant bin we wouldn’t able to find it... as if the only other two vehicles had the same wrk done they didn’t expect my response! Saying they changed the whole fan when they called me to come back b4 I could make it home!🤨 oh I guess you just had that brand new fan for my vehicle just sitting around!🤥..
I use a Mechanic I found & know now for my cars.. these places rip ppl off and ppl don’t have it $ like that!.. they’d get more service and vehicles if they weren’t known for and never jack up prices and take advantage of ppl every day all day! ...shameful!!!😡

Thank you for this cause I took my car to Cadillac cause it's leaking fluid and they gonna tell me $1300 to replace a cap. I took it to Firestone and they told me it would cost $3000 cause the rack and pinion needs to be changed as well as the pump and pipes. I called Cadillac to ask why they didn't tell me all these things were wrong. They gonna say they didn't see it 😒😒😒

I have had my SRX for almost 11 years. (134,000 miles) During that time I have only had to replace the oil, the tires and the brakes. Nothing went wrong with it. This car has required the least maintenance of any that I have owned............ But then I did not fool around with DIY electrical projects.

I bought my SRX new in 2012, AWD platinum, and have had exactly 1 problem with it. A bulged battery the dealership swapped out for free. If you are going to tinker with the electronics you should expect problems. Don't screw around with it unless you know EXACTLY how that infotainment computer is wired. You will have a bad time. I drive mine everyday and love it! I will say that the CUE infotainment center on years 2013 and up is dreadfull. And the gauge cluster on the 2013 and up looks so bad I STILL can't believe that it's being used. You want an SRX? Go look at the 2012. That was peak SRX styling. The transmission ain't the best but I'll drive it forever.

She just had the first brake job done on it and the third set of tires, only has 83000 km on it, the Michelin tires are crap, she put Firestone LE3’s on it this spring they are quite, and twice as much tread. Love your accent. I have a 2005 srx. It's been a nightmare. For your intermittent miss check your coils again!! Those coils have a talent of firing against the block right where the tip of it is attached to the top part of the coil. I've had misfire problems to death!! Also I had my favorite mechanic who usually does my work fix a rear main seal leak. My car is a 2 wheel drive and It's also rear wheel drive. He put it all back together and now I have a whine in the trans. Took it back he put a trans in it and now THAT one whines. I'd say it was low on fluid but it goes into gear immediately when you shift. And changes gears as it should. I'm disabled and stuck. I don't want the trans to get ruined. No one knows what to do with it and my regular mechanic gave up. So you're doing a lot better than me lol!!

  • @apieceofdirt4681

First, I just bought a 2011 SRX Performance Edition and I absolutely love it. It only has 16,031 miles on it and it was babied. I bought the dealerships 3 year bumper to bumper warranty because if something goes wrong Cadillac’s are notoriously expensive to repair so I’ve got peace of mind for at least 3 years or 50,000 miles; not bad
Second, 93,000 miles on any GM vehicle is quite a lot. Even though it’s a Caddy you’re going to start having some issues around the 100,000 mile mark and you’re probably already there given how much time you said you spent in the car driving.
Third, my advice.......sell it immediately and get something with way less miles on it. People buy these used Cadillac’s with a ton of miles on them because they want the prestige of owning one but can’t afford to purchase one 2-3 years old because they are expensive.

I don't regret it because the price we paid was very good within 500 miles of my zip code. Basically almost half off from when it was brand new. Sounds like you're creating many of the problems by tinkering with the wiring, these cars are very sensitive to electrical disruptions. I own a 2013 SRX and have had very little issues other than the dull low beam headlamp reflector issue. I have driven over 2 million miles on my vehicles over the years and found the best way to maintain them is regular service dates plus have the recommended maintenance performed at each 50k interval. I do not tinker around with anything involving the engine, trans, electrical or electronics which has proven to not effect the operation of any of my vehicles whatsoever, they have all performed well with the factory installed components. For the most part, every vehicle i've owned has easily lasted 200k without any major issue, most were sold or traded between 200k-250k still without any major issues but well worn as expected. Oh yes, Toyota's and Ford's are my primary choice of vehicles and i've owned a couple of GM and Dodge products as well a Nissan my wife drove over 250k until the CVT transmission failed which was expected.

Greetings MeCo :)! I really enjoyed your review of the Caddy SRX FWD, I was surprised to hear of all the problems you were having. I own a caddy SRX4 2015, luxury trim package, and have learned to absolutely love this machine. It has sportscar looks, performance and GMC truck muscle and endurance, what a machine! I would love to move up to the XT5 or get a newer SRX4, maybe a 2016 Premium trim. I was wondering what you think of the XT5 and do you think they will ever bring back the SRX4 in a totally new reincarnation? It seems the SRX model was an underappreciated gem of a car, and Caddilac made a BIG mistake by putting this car out to pasture. What do you think?

    • @yunkellz

I agree, it was an underappreciated vehicle. Its really a great ride to own. I believe he bought a car that was kind of beat on.. the headlights are a disaster if i must be honest. The XT5 is honestly a whole new world of vehicle to succeed the srx. You miss the wood steering wheel but love the new leather feel and the ride is a bit firmer then the srx(not counting active dampers). Its weird but great. It has its issues as well but i would encourage you to test drive one for at minimum of 15mins

When you buy a 6 year-old car with 90k miles, it's possible it might not be perfect, and it probably came with the words "AS IS" somewhere in the paperwork. You tried to install HID headlights on it that came from a kit, and it messed up the cars electrical system. If you want HID headlights, buy a car where HID headlights were installed at the factory. HID headlights require taking 12 volt DC and changing it to 90 volts AC at 400 Hz. There's spikes and AC voltages feeding back all through electrical and computer components that weren't designed to deal with them. Same story with the dashcam. Some cheap phone chargers that plug into cigarette lighters are known to emit radio frequency garbage that causes problems that are difficult to diagnose.

2012 was a worse year than my 13. My 13 has been "ok" Im lucky i purchased an excellent warranty from NAAC and have had no issue with the high dollar repairs these things need. I dotn recommend anyone buying one of these used unless you want to consider getting a warranty. When I bought it there were issues I knew about and because I can do the repairs I was shocked at the cost of these parts for this car. Start with headlights, they leak. I took off the front end and sealed them up...no issues since. All 4 brakes need replaced. I didnt know that when I first bought it since they said an inspection was done. As A 34 year tech the pads were 35% on front and and maybe same in front. The front brake rotor wasnt great which I new no biggie those were cheap. I knew it needed struts I did those in my drive in an hour an half.
The reason I bought this car because the history of it was well documented. My suggestion to anyone is do not buy one of these with out any kind of a warranty. You will 100% use it.

Owned my 2014 cadillac srx for 2 years now...and only had 1 problem, the rear liftgate stopped working. Turned out to be water collecting under the trim below the trunk storage compartment. This water caused the control unit for the hydraulic lift pump to short out. So I had my mechanic replace the control unit and drill two holes in the compartment. That was over 10 months ago and I havent had any problems since then. And I drive it daily. I love the sporty look, I love the smooth ride, and most of all I love how quiet the interior is. You can really lose yourself in this cars interior it's so gorgeous. Also it's got plenty of power yet it's very smooth in its acceleration. I think the 2012 is the only good year for the SRX. Anything prior has the 3.0L engine that has number of issues. The 2012 and up comes with 3.6L which I personally think is a much better motor over the 3.0.
2013 and up comes with the never CUE infotainment system. Unfortunately the CUE system is very buggy and is known for multitude of issues.
On either year you will need to replace the headlights (as per my other video) as they are just bad. GM did a really bad job on them. Any aftermarket headlight is better than GM.
Other than all the issues listed in this video and the headlight issue, I did not have any other problems. I think the SRX is definitely an over-engineered vehicle and therefore can be more prone for problems.
Probably reading some posts on the caddi forums would give you better idea on any other common problems that I am just not aware of...
