I loved it ..Many times when I drive by a job . And it's the middle July here in SC .. I point up and tell my wife " Look at all those guys roofing .. That's male privilege !!" .. I am an older carpenter and the few roofing jobs I have done in my life . The temp was about 2 degrees above molten lava . Wanted to jump off the roof , Headfirst into a cube of brick .. granted I have sheathed hundreds of roofs in my days and it can get savagely hot up there all day . Question .. What is the most comfortable pitch to roof ?? ..I heard some like a 4/12 and others like 10/12' .. Personally as a carpenter .. I like an 8/12 to sheathe .. Not as much back break and the toes still cling to the roof .. I believe roofers have one of the most grueling jobs on earth and go straight to Heaven when they die .

You're only as good as your laborer, there was alot more he could have been doing to help speed up the process but that's on the guys with more experience for not giving him direction :) someone els said this but it's true, tool belt for coils, hammer, hacket, knifes even snips, he could be pre cutting the 2 shingles for his gable edge and instead of handing shingles he could be placing them above him on the next shingles so all he has to do is pull it down a bit to set the shingle less moving for the installer and you can place the shingles like that all the way up your run so you're never really just standing around being useless lol but either way you guys still killed it

Gentlemen , (because , let's face it , all the haters are MEN) it's not about speed or quality . It's about being EFFICIENT . Efficiency is the happy marriage between speed and quality. Zack does his work like a battalion commander . It's not about the tools you have or the men you have. It's about knowing where and when to put those assets into battle to affect the closest outcome to your mission goals . You could see from the video , that Zack and Boycub both had all the starter , shingles, nails and space they needed to do the job. However , did you notice WHERE Zack put those assets ? They were ALWAYS just a step ahead of him, ALWAYS within arms-reach . It's about being EFFICIENT ! If you put a step-counter on Zack and Boycub , you would notice that Boycub takes 3 times the number of steps to complete THE SAME AMOUNT OF WORK ! LOL , that is , if a dropped knee counts as a step ! Anyone ever noticed how often Zack stretches his back ? Do you know WHY he does that ? BECAUSE HE IS ON HIS FEET ALL DAY !! THAT'S WHAT WORK IS !! The only time Zack gets on his knees , is to cut in a vent , do some flashing , drip edge , or starter. He gets on his knees to lay his FOUNDATION . That's where the quality thing comes in.Vents CANNOT leak . Flashing CANNOT leak , eave and rake trim and starter HAVE TO be straight !! Shingling can be done with our eyes closed . The eave and rake are the PERIMETER . Preparation of these in roofing , is the same as securing your perimeter in the field of battle . The foundation for the fight ! To KNOW your environmental boundaries . You may not realize it , but walking a roof all day places muscle memory in your head with regard to that perimeter . How many steps from rake to rake etc. How many steps from ridge to eave . That's what keeps us from stepping off the roof . Which only proves that your head needs to be as organized as your body to accomplish ANY task ! You always have the right clothing , boots , pouch , tools , materials to complete the job. How about getting your head involved too !! Humans are inherently LAZY . BUT !! There are 2 kinds of lazy . 1) people who DON'T WANT TO EXERT ANY ENERGY to get something done. 2) People who KNOW that there is a more productive way to accomplish a task . People , DON'T waste steps ! Be they footsteps , or steps in a process . Each step we take , takes us closer to our goals . Wouldn't you rather reach your goal with energy left over ? Zack has a REASON to put his feet up when he gets home . He worked all day . But.....if he gets spun up later today , he will have the energy to complete that task too . I taught all my sons to ask themself a question before doing something . " IF I DO THIS , WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN ?" In relationships , life , and work , ask yourself that question before doing everything . It will save you time , effort , AND , it will save you a recall to that very place in your life . I wish you all happiness in everything .

Well not trying to smack the tosser in this video but there were tons of times when the shooter didn't have singles ready for several seconds because he went to grab more, after he fully ran out. Most of it comes down to work ethic, and a steady pace. Also the owner of the video is pretty darn fast, so it's hard to keep up with two novices or average roofers.

Getting around the cut in and doing the start quick and efficiently is the mark of a good journeyman, so cutting that out defeats the purpose of the competition to me.

Looking down from the peak, if you start on the left side instead of the right, you move to the right, and slide your shingle to the right to line it up. You put your first nail in on the right side of the shingle, adjust the left side and nail it down. I may be the odd man out on this one but that doesn't make me wrong.
