Mostly Gengar was good for its spinblocking and booming, but not having STAB was offset by almost everything else not having STAB. In ADV your big physical threats are Tyranitar, Metagross, Salamence, and Aero who have 2 physical STABs between them (Rock Slide for aero/tar and Meteor Mash for metagross), otherwise they were just clicking non-STAB quakeslide/brickbreak/focuspunch, with aero/mence occasionally running HP Flying
Explosion is a move that deserves it. Its impact was MASSIVE. Especially in 2nd gen, but just in general it was a huge part of competitive Pokémon. I was very disappointed when they nerfed it.

Boom is substantially stronger than the Hyper Beam and it's clones though. Well it was before gen 5. It was so strong that Pokemon with bad Attack stats like Gengar could run it. 150 is good base power but not a wall breaking tool by any means. Outside of Gen 1 the only thing I can think of that used Hyper Beam was Slaking. The drawback turn just sucks and you'd be better off using 2 consecutive 75bp moves in the majority of situations. They're cool for in game I guess I definitely used the Hyper Beam Nuke strategy a couple of times.

I still remember back in DPP, sometimes you can cheese a win against a team using Lead Pert by exploding with your Lead Tran/Gross while hiding your SR. It was whack Shout out to that article in one of the issue of The Smog talking about dream ability change where Swampert would have been ridiculously good with Damp since this trick was pretty commonly used at the time

You read my mind. Last night, before bed, I was thinking about the nerf to explosion and wondering what the metagame would be like if it were restored to its former glory. These types of silly thought experiments help me doze off. Coincidences are fun.
Fun fact: in RBY only, Golem has this cute little niche thing where it can Explode on a Substitute and still live with 1HP. This was patched in Pokemon Stadium, where Substitute is extremely common, provoking the loss of Golem's only niche over Rhydon.
Golem has another niche over Rhydon; its a tad faster and therefore beats Rhydon 1v1 without hax like a crit or Body Slam paralysis. Rhydon is still better but it's crazy I've actually won games because of that.
Hey BKC, I know you're primarily a singles player, but out of curiosity, do you happen to know anything about ADV doubles? I've always been surprised it didn't take off more considering its the first generation with a doubles format, but it seems to be a super niche topic.
@@pawouapproval984 a lot of less experienced players don’t know the differences between the different gen sprites so it can be hard to tell what gen he is talking about at any given point in the video, and I don’t think it would really take to much effort from bkc’s end anyways. And while I do watch the entire video, most people don’t have the time to watch a 2 hour video about one move. Honestly you are really making a big deal over nothing

Would love to see some of the more niche strategies covered like this such as low level strats or paraflinch. Heck, I'd watch you explain the different types stall with this format
@@fuckcontinentals There's a decent amount you could go into from the difference between a more bulky build that hinges on Paralysis spread and the more popular slap a choice Scarf on and hope for the best. Paraflinch is easily one of the most successful gimmick in competitive Pokemon right next to Baton Pass, as such, a few recent Pokemon like Zygarde and Togedemaru make for incredibly effective paralysis spreaders. The paralysis nerf in gen 7 did make this a lot less reliable, but thankfully, gen 8 gave us Beat Up on a lot more Pokemon so that you can spread your win condition out a bit more
Had a thought is z-explosion viable in gen 7, I assume something like 7 double edge would have similar power, and more use elsewhere, but if the goal was power wouldn't explosion be the best base for normalium z or does the z move do some weird shit to explosion?

In let’s go you must always be ready for a lax that has facade and or explode. The meta has gone the more support role lately but it is always in the back and makes for a solid game one of three wow factor and or makes the player fear lax way more game two and three.
I used it a lot on my RBY teams. You pretty much live and die by Hypnosis accuracy if you hit a Psychic type. It is really useful for that (boom absorb) as well as pivoting around Body Slam and Hyper Beam, if you can outspeed and kill the next turn. But I found myself winning more consistently without it.
For someone wanting to get into Smogon battles, which Gen would you recommend? I grew up with Gen 1 & 2 but Gen 3 seems to be an enjoyable mix of more developed mechanics and diverse field? Thoughts appreciated!
I miss old boom. No idea why they felt the need to nerf it so much but then thought Last Respects, Rage Fist, and V-Create were acceptable moves. And that Dark Beads and Hadron Engine were acceptable abilities...
You can't just say obviously to the fact that explosion has more uses than just dealing damage. It's a damage dealing move, many players will asume that's its purpose, because momentum, while being a fairly simple concept, isn't one everyone will intuitively understand.
If you come to these videos without a understanding of basic concepts in competitive battling, you're probably gonna be lost on many things he mentions regardless. And he elaborates on those concepts here as well. I don't see the issue.

I've always wished Swampert had damp in gen 3 and 4. Shame he only got it when explosion basically became irrelevant.

Explosion apparently becomes a 200bp move when turned into Breakneck Blitz. So Z explosion is actually weaker than normal explosion.
