  • If you are not a reddit mod, i.e. you have left the house in the past 10 years, you have surely noticed a worrying trend. Cars are getting bigger, heavier, and less maneuverable. Ford Fiestas and Toyota Corollas are being replaced by Toyota RAV4s and Ford F-150s.
You might have thought “why is this the case?”
In this video, we'll answer that question and make the case that cars have to get smaller, not larger.

I cycle on low trikes and I am fearful of the front blind spot of SUV's and Pick Up trucks.

Our neighbors have a VW tiguan SUV, but they just use it for commuting or taking their child to school and don't even park it inside thier newly built garage, so they obstruct the road and it is difficult to get our car out without crashing (we have a S-Max[only real MPV of normal / not too unnecessarily big size that was/is on the market] since we're a big family, and mostly use it for going on holidays or getting the groceries[I didn't yet convince other family members to use the bus to go shopping, since bringing back 3 big bags by bus isn't quite what my relatives want to do in thier free time]). I really am not convinced that our neighbors that have a smaller family need bigger cars (they have 2 of them), especially if they only commute, which is possible by train (we have 1/2 hourly train service to prague and 1/2 / 1 hourly buses, I myself go to school by train and tram)...
On the other hand, my grandpa has a Škoda 4 wheel drive Karoq SUV (the Karoq is the smaller and less SUV-ish one, still kind of looks more like a normal car than a big hummer thing), but my grandparents do actually kind of need it, since they live in a pretty rural place in the Zlín region, the road going to ther house isn't too nice when it gets frozen over in the vinter, so the 4wheel drive is pretty handy. And my grandma is a dentist, so she leaves her house pretty early, and needs to be able to get to her dentists office, in time for the opening hours no matter what the weather is like.
So in conclusion I believe SUVs can be a good option, but only if you live in a " prdel světa " (middle of nowhere) with bad roads and a job / school /something that requires you to be able to get out of the house/ to a destination with bad access no matter the circumstances, but in a city / the suburban mess I would be for banning these big idiots, since ironically most people who have them really just use it to go to the office and not to go to the forest...

      Yeah, i agree
Some people truly do need a bigger, bulkier car, which is completely fine by me
what is not fine by me are middle aged suburbanites driving hummers alone to Costco and to their office job, and back, like bruh you can just take transit, or if that's not avaliable, you could easily make those trips in a Toyota Corolla or Ford Fiesta

I live in a suburb but my family has two large SUVs. I agree with most of this video and think we need better transport. I wouldn’t get a smaller car though, my dad doesn’t use his car for work but does often haul large amounts of wood/dirt, and my mom drives cross country a lot. Cars like Hummers or F-150s are annoying though. The bigger the truck the smaller the man.

The thing is most lifted trucks are just pavement princess. Older trucks that are smaller with more bed space are the ones actually used by farmers/construction

Exactly, we should be moving into smaller cars
and the "what if I need to carry stuff" argument isn't valid for 95% of cases
