At least in the US, I think the illusion of safety plays a role. This is especially true if they are surrounded by a bunch of larger vehicles. I work in an area with tons of truckers, and there have been a few times where I’m one of the only sedans on the road.
On the producer’s end, I’d compare it our housing market. Both SUVs and larger houses have higher profit margins compared to smaller models, and the US has enough space to make both of them more viable for more buyers here. So even if most people here don’t strictly need the space for more children or an extra office, they’ll go bigger because that’s what they can access.
I also think that to a lesser extent, the comfort factor some Americans cite might have to do with the obesity rates here. My father weighs a little under 400 lbs, and he can barely fit into my sedan’s passenger seat.

Automakers are already phasing small sedans and other smaller vehicles in favor of an electric lineup that are all mostly Pickup/SUV/Crossover build. Most people absolutely do not care about the environment at all. If you asked them in a poll, most of them would even say that they do care for the environment, but their actions show that they really don`t. After talking with many people I manage to get most of them to admit that they don`t really give a shit, at least not enough to give up on anything they like. Even people who believe in climate change and that it is bad, most of them don`t really care enough to change their life style and reduce their consumtion. No, instead they expect politicians and corporations to come up with a magical solution, that will allow them to keep on consuming as usual without having a guilty conscience. It has become quite popular to tell each other that the "ecological footprint" is a lie, so they don`t feel the need to reduce their consumption, which totally plays into the hands of corporations. People blame and shit on corporations, but don`t like it when you tell them to not buy their products, because most people like to buy stuff and they don`t like to be told that their actions have bad consequences. People really don`t want to take any personal responsibility. And worst of all, many liberal and eco channels also started to say things like recycling and your ecological footprint is bullshit, which just makes people not try to do better at all. Your ecological footprint is real though and recycling when well done works and is really needed. Corporations are not Captain planet villains who pollute the environment and emit CO2 just for fun, they do it to sell us products. Products we buy. And because we buy them, because of our insane demand, the result is more environmental destruction. There is no magical technology. Everybody needs to take personal responsibility. Problem is that most people really don`t care. And even those who claim to care are not willing to do their part. And that`s why it`s getting more and more hopeless. Those who try to change their lifestyle eventually give up, simply because others won`t and therefore they feel like they are doing it in vain. Instead of discouraging each other from reducing consumption, we need to keep on encouraging people to do their part. Because that`s the only way to turn it around. But sadly, it looks like most people really want to drive the car off the cliff, hoping that by some miracle a bridge will appear right when we reach the edge.

A 200HP hatchback will outperform an SUV with double the power output simply because of the power to weight ratio. This just goes to show that car companies and their marketing teams are doing an excellent job at bamboozling the masses into thinking that SUVs are superior. They are not superior. They are good at fulfilling certain needs but not all. If you really want performance, always look for a balanced power to weight ratio. SUVs look like they have power but they also weigh a lot more than sedans, hatchbacks and estates. Essentially, if you want something with above average ground clearance, decent boot space and a high seating position, by all means, buy an SUV. If you want performance, opt for anything but an SUV.

When all around will be driving SUVs, you'll need a truck (a real truck, not a pickup) to feel safer 😀 . And then, probably, a tank 😅 . It's also funny to observe people buying compact crossovers (which are, in fact, just slightly lifted B-class cars) for a price of C-class, thinking, that they're getting something "bigger". My C-class wagon has nearly the same internal space (both passenger and luggage) as a standard SUV (BMW X5 or similar) and definitely beats compact SUVs, but it's much easier and cheaper to maintain. But in order to realize that the brain has to evolve from a reptile 😉.

A lot of SUV’s are actually hatchbacks that ride higher on the road, so they’re not SUV’s at all.

@@visalserei 1 they represent 15% of the deaths in kids (thanks to his visibility problems)
2 in a frontal car crash if you are driving a sedan is 40% more likely that you are gonna die if its against an SUV
3 Also u are more likely to die if your SUV turn over in a car crash
4 There are far more useful vehicles for utility on a city, you need space? a station wagon is far more efficient
5 Their bed size is small for an actual work, plus its high makes it a problem to carry things which makes people who really need an "utility" vehicle opt for a van instead or a light truck who is more efficient to carry heavy loads on a difficult terrain.
6 There are more than one study that shows SUV owners tend to be the worst drivers (like you are)
7 Only reason SUV are a thing is to make car manufactures make more money
So basically they're meant for killing small children and carry fragile egos in that small bed size that doesn't work for anything else
