in the age of dialogue options, character selection and mythical creatures, it is very difficult for canon to be as sacred as it once was. But this problem was raised long before the franchise hit the Witcher universe. let's explore that

Had to. As you said in the video there are to many inconsistencies right now and if you care about the canon there is no other way.
Like for me Kassandra is alive destroying PoEs and until Altair's times she managed to destroy so many of them that they are really rare as the first games shows us. So there is no point of her running around and telling shitty jokes. Perhaps she just got back to her cave in Greece. I hope so at least (hope that she won't appear anymore in some DLC crossover)

I thought you couldn't make head canon that conflicts with the actual canon? Like it could be your head canon that Connor's ending monologue takes place for real even though it's the game equivalent of a deleted scene, but not that Kassandra is not immortal
But I think it's a nice idea that I can just not care about the entirety of Odyssey by thinking it's non-canon. Thanks for the tip lol

The sad realization I had when you were talking about Kassandra, is that if they made her a likeable character, and got rid of the dialogue tree which contradicts with her character, we couldve had multiple games with her living her life through different time periods, and then when she dies we feel an emotional impact towards her death

    • @Sohbek
      @Sohbek Před 6 dny

I found her very likeable, but I chose dialogue options that I felt suited her instead of just literally choosing every single option. I went into Odyssey expecting to hate it (I disliked Origins overall, and AC3 was a huge blow to me for my addiction to the series, but it was Origins that broke me), but it became my second favorite after AC2.
I do like the idea of multiple games with her. I think dialogue trees were a mistake overall though and if they revisited her I'd prefer they nix that.

Okay, you don't need to believe me, but the part where you talked about a spreadsheet with all AC info throughout every media does exist : I know a guy working at Ubisoft who's actual job title is "Assassins Creed archivist". He is writing what's known as a "Bible" documenting each piece of information about AC in games, comics, movies, etc. It's actually quite hard to do because of the recent games, but I still believe this guy has my dream job ! He gets to meet all of the writing teams, and he constantly updates his Bible, to then give it to newcomers in Ubisoft studios to specifically avoid retcons and inconsistencies. This job was created partly due to fans pointing out problems with the canon, so I hope he will help AC writers to avoid these problems in the future!

My issue with the RPG’s has never been the tech per se, It’s been the separation of a whole narrative. Every game seems one off and by the end of Valhalla, while I give them their dues, it seems they REALLY just pieced together whatever they could to give Layla some sort of cohesive wrap up, but all in the shadow of Desmond. Every character to me feels to blank.

I hated the inclusion of isu weapons purely because I feel they shouldn’t have had need for swords and spears. Like why wouldn’t they have super guns if they needed weapons? The shroud, crystal balls and apples made sense to me cause they were just super tech being used as weapons.

The canon in Assassins creed is conflicted more by some fans who understand and/ or don’t want to accept. An example I can give is mirage, the idea of Basim teleporting, but it is confirmed that its a glitch pf the animus that he moves fast, but we don’t see it fluid because the real person is at the animus. We know that Basim isn’t actually human, he’s an isu decent that actually makes sense that he moves fast, and when the assassins focus activates we see that the animus starts glitching istead of the body just disappears like nightcrawler from xmen. And the glitches of the animus happen since Ac 1, where the glitch didn’t let us altair to swim. And in odessy in my understanding, Kassandra is inmortal by the isu artifacts like the spear of leonidas and the staff of hermes which strengthen the idea that the Isu can even evade death, but not from their extinction. My point is, this things just strengthen a part of the canon which is the power that the Isu had and how it affects humans, like the apple of eden, the sages, etc. I’m not defending the flaws, im just establishing the stories were evading

I think AC has evolved completely beyond control. Back then AC1 was a revolutionary title, but it was a niche compared to the other titles in the future.
The stealth had no crouch button, the open world was limited, the control was unique, parkour was in depth yet under-explained, the story was more like a philosophy lesson with static cutscenes that weren't movie-like, the modern day and sci-fi elements that break pacing... yet we all loved it for those reasons.
Outside fanbase love the games because they can run around the Colosseum, they can be the greatest Pirate in gaming, they can be the most charming man in Italy, kill a few guards in history. They don't care about the Creed, they don't care about the sci-fi elements, the modern day... they don't care about the true identity of AC: a historical sci-fi about chaos vs order. They just see this as the biggest AAA historical gaming franchise... and to me that's just sad.

I never intended to gatekeep, I think it's fine people enjoying this franchise for whatever reasons. What's sad is they don't know what this franchise is about yet they act like they know it. At the very least, they should actually understand the identity of the franchise instead of... spreading misinformations like they did recently. I'm talking about people... asking for historical accuracy in a game about filling the gaps in our history, fiction... a work of fiction.
Look at Ace Combat and Armored Core. Ace Combat has a small fanbase, yet the larger audience know that it's an arcade flight game.

    • @ragnarth_781
      @ragnarth_781 Před 2 měsíci +6

At least casual players don't pretend to care. What makes me mad about some of the fanbase is that, because they love Odyssey, their mission in life is to prove that it is an Assassin's Creed game, that the lore is the richest in the franchise, and that anyone who says these recent games lack the franchise's identity simply doesn't understand Assassin's Creed.
Oh man, I don't even know what to say about that. It's so sad that we're left with a franchise without a conclusion, without the evolution it deserves. Instead, it's been replaced by a copy of trends with questionable lore, and fans who won't even acknowledge that it's not the same in any conceivable way to the originals.

@@lukethelegend9705 to be fair syndicate is one of my favourite games. A game that is both a gang underworld fantasy, and an assassin's creed story about a young man who has to slowly give up his quest for personal freedom, in order to become a true assassin and defend the people's free will. But outside of the actual fans for syndicate, there are people who don't pay attention or care about it, and they just slander the game, slander Jacob, and sing the praises of evie, because she is a she and the journalists slander Jacob because of that. So you end up with "fans" who don't like the games core concept, who don't like the games main character, (Jacob) and who don't like the present day plot, and who don't understand that Jacob assassinating the templars is the core "assassin's creed" part of the game. Not evie on and off chasing an ancient key while she dates Henry. Because, like altier, Jacob is reckless until the end where he learns to be better, and it's in the ending where Jacob comes face to face with the shroud and the science fiction of the game. Jacob becomes so much more 3 dimensional and throughout the game, he has character growth and depth to who he is. But the point is, we have a bunch of false fans who just want to be a woman in victorian london and go beat up guys. But that's not the point of syndicate. And so we have ubisoft listening to people who don't like syndicate, instead of trying to please fans who actually do love Syndicate. This is visible in the dlc. Jacob wasn't playable in the ripper dlc, and the entire dlc was about being a woman and attacking guys who weren't even always on side with the ripper. It was a terrible dlc. But people who hate syndicate, love that dlc. And people who love Syndicate, don't like the dlc.
That is a problem that changes in some ways to each game, but exists in many AC games. Like AC 3. People who don't really care about it, hate on Connor and say you should've been haytham the entire time, and it creates a similar situation to syndicate, where the real main character and the true fans are left behind to please trend chasers. Again, AC Origins fans like bayek, but false Origins fans who don't play it often, or complete it more than one or two times, swear you should be Aya the entire time. Because they don't value the games concept and the narrative idea for the game. Similarly, female eivor didn't suit the fantasy behind AC valhalla, and it's major fans favour male eivor. I've even heard people say liberation should've been about Connor instead of Aveline, misunderstanding that the game wouldn't be liberation without Aveline. She was great. The point I'm making is false fans who don't varese much, throw characters and true fans under the bus, and often ubisoft ends up ruining things for the hardcore fans.

The canon, when handled with passion and love, has the capability to turn a story into a living breathing entity from which it is easy to pull inspiration and philosophy from. A little late to this so The Spaniard probably won’t see this, but my headcanon with Kassandra specifically is that after she lost her partner and had to give up her son to keep him safe, she became a lot more of a serious and grounded character whose personality mellowed out and perhaps more resembled the charisma and wit of Ezio, especially after the centuries where she became a lone wolf.
You can see this in the AC Valhalla DLC with how she interacts with Eivor. She is a lot more serious about her duty of covertly recovering and taking away Pieces of Eden from around the world (of course, that shows the potential that she had as a character written without branching dialogues).
This leads into the explanation as to why she’s absent in the prior AC games. It’s highly likely that during those times, she was elsewhere in the world, operating alone and fighting Templars/Cultists/Order of Ancients/corrupt Assassins using Pieces of Eden.
Although Kassandra ended up aligning closer towards Assassin ideology, her main mission across the centuries was to locate and dispose of the Pieces of Eden. Explicitly being a part of the Hidden Ones/Assassin, following their Creed and all of its politics, and having to look after people she formed attachments would have restricted Kassandra from doing that effectively and efficiently.
I’ve been a fan of the AC series since childhood and I have played every mainline game since AC1. I was part of the AC community that hated what Odyssey was and refused to play it or know anything about Kassandra and her story until recently. However, after giving AC Odyssey a try just this month and approaching the end of the game (pre-DLC), I can say that it IS an enjoyable historical fiction RPG.
It definitely doesn’t rank higher than the traditional AC games or Origins, and I still firmly believe it is the least “Assassin” Assassin’s Creed game (obviously) but I have a newfound respect for the game after giving it a chance.

I feel like for any big franchise nowadays, you have to create your own head canon to prevent yourself from going bonkers or just becoming a whining ball of misery.
That goes for anything like Assassin's Creed or Star Wars as you've described, to examples i read in the comments like Marvel & DC.
I also use my AC head canon to bring others IPs in my general AC universe as long as i find a common thread.

I think it’s amusing that in Odyssey, Laylah has that whole report file on truth and Alethia. Alethia being Revelation, or the director and writers; Coherence, the whole historical accuracy of the series; and Correspondence, if all the new facts and gameplay have been matching up in canon
Somehow odyssey plays around with everything to the chagrin of many, and yet explains itself unwittingly xD

honestly the only thing that i can think of that could "fix" the lore situation and please both oldschool fans and rpg fans is to do a hard reboot. then they could write the magic in to the story better and not break established lore. if they did that we could have teleportation without it being badly masked as a animus glitch, or we could have cassandra be immortal without the capability of the staff betraying the capabilities of established isu tech and lore, we could have a completely coherent lore that adhere to the laws of its own making.

[Spoilers] I’ve come to accept the new canon. I certainly have a separate headcanon of the lore pre-Origins, as well as a separate headcanon of G-d’s role in the both canons, but I agree with the problems with Kassandra. It would have been fine if she didn’t explore beyond her what her expected lifespan would be in Ancient Greece. Of course her dialogue cements that she explored well past this in Odyssey, and her appearance in Valhalla really drives it home that she ventured well beyond Greece. It would have been better if she just stayed in the vault, but her suit suggests she certainly visited the surface in the 21st or at least the 20th century.
I have my problems with the sexist heads at Ubisoft, but the ones who decided the entire story of Kassandra and how major of a role she would possess, felt like the extreme opposite that is no more desirable than the former. Mind you, I’m someone who has come to enjoy Kassandra, especially after playing her again with a canon playthrough-courtesy of a Reddit(?) user who read the book and matched up choices-but she still feels uncomfortably out of place and Mary Sue. Heck, they admittedly loved her so much that Randvi is modeled after her, so much so that it’s referenced prior to and upon meeting Kassandra. There are certainly ways they could have made her work much more respectfully. Oh well. Eivør, on the other hand, I’d rather pretend didn’t exist. Basim was just hallucinating again.

I absolutely hate when games like Assassin's creed with voice protagonists have optional genders in the pre game. They make this bad excuse that the animus cant read for sure if it was a man or woman but come on... Seriously? Just absurdity. Game writer's have become so scared to make hard definitive decisions and they want us to write the game for them half the time. Write a story and write it strongly. If my character is a woman make it a woman and write her character well. I dont need to have an option for every single thing. These decisions like gender of the main character and multiple choice endings nake it so that you can never feel the full weight of the player characters actions in the next game. It fucks up the canon and to yey have to write around it by only vaguely referring to the events in question.

I think with some of the lore you have to do some head canon to fill in the blanks and others you just have retcon somethings to fill in the blanks but i think you can make it all connected as is except the part where Kassandra is immortal now it was cool if it was self contained in one game or just get a small collection video of some of Kassandra's journey after Odyssey but the fact she's immortal and ubisoft is trying to make Kassandra the new face of the rpg era like Ezio was for his era is probably the problem not saying having a woman character is bad just not every fan is in agreement that Kassandra is the best character for that role i think doing a mass effect idea using save files or allowing you to choose who is canon before the crossover for Odyssey and Valhalla would have been the correct choice and personality choices in Odyssey you can explain away with aminmus tweaking and upgrades not that most of the choices you make in Odyssey matter except for a selected few but it gives you immersion and allows you to play however you choose not just limited to one playstyle but i had to headcanon a lot when playing with Alexios so Kassandra makes sense for that Valhalla crossover but i still say making certain characters canon can be a problem with this issue it's lack of player choice here not a lore issue and a lot of the issues you addressed can be explained or just accepted as is or create your own lore to explain it and now Layla is immortal now being Kassandra handed the staff over to Layla Kassandra died in Odyssey after handing over the staff

A very annoying thing about RPG era, Is when Layla found Amunet's tomb in the Qattara Depression, while by canon she's been found in 1300s and brought in Italy, and the worst thing is that this was an intentional choice, but it doesn't make sense and the explanation (the tombs of AC2 were only a tribute) are not true, because in Ac2 you see bodies in tombs and if in the Medieval times they were wrong, well this is not explained.
Talking about my personal canonisation, I invented in my mind that Kassandra does not existed, it was only an Erodotus invention and Layla create a sistem that "reads" the Fake Erodotus Book that she found and digitlized it.
I hope that a true Greek Canon and more real story is explained by AC Infinity.
I also invent in my mind that the Animus is created for relieve the memories, but some thungs such as mechanics, style, mood is manipulated by Assassins or Templars. In fact i assume that Vidic Animus shows the real history, because the focus was on finding pieces of eden, so it need to be precise (Ac1) and this explains the gretty, painful reality of Crusades, and also the death or Illness of the subjects. Instead, the first Assassins Animus is based on Vidic one, so is still authentic, BUT eliminate all the disturbing things and atmospheres (in fact Ac2/Br/Re is more colorful, less violent and more adapted to guarantee relaxing sessions), while Ac III is a full manipulated Assassins history because Rebecca perfectionate and simplified the Animus (there is an Email that talk about various changings). From Black Flag Abstergo begun to modify the Animus Sessions creating an installment for normal people, but when you play BF is authentic, in fact BF is more like Ac1 in some things, more sad story etc, Rouge and Liberation are modified experience by abstergo
Unity is stolen from Abstergo as virgin files, in fact Unity is an authentic experience such as Ac1 and BF
Syndicate is an Assassin Creation in fact is something like Odyssey (when Layla was with assassins), and they have the same fun and colorful (and idiotic) style of plot.
Origins came from DNA from Bayek so in some way is authentic but with limitations (Layla modified something). Ac Valhalla is non canon for me, I'm sorry
Ac Mirage is canonic and real because came from Basim DNA that is in part ISU, in fact the game is more authentic, gretty and realistic.
Hope you enjoy my mental invention of Lore :)

Whatever you may feel about the RPG games they are from a canon perspective one giant retcon. They retroactively shoehorned new lore into the canon and we're expect to believe it was always like that. If concepts like the Hidden Ones, Order of the Ancients and different factions of Isu were known as late as the 9th century then it makes no sense that the present day assassins wouldn't have been aware of the these things in the present day events of the earlier games. The problem is that most people who play these games don't make the distinction between an enjoyable video game and a good AC game, and it all started with Black Flag. Once they make a game normies enjoy playing stuff like lore, the modern day and what an AC game is supposed to feel like doesn't matter anymore and its why we are where we are with the franchise now. My head canon is all this nonsense retconing is a Templar computer virus in the animus nobody is aware of.

Tbh my biggest problem with Odyssey is gameplay Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War both were just better and we havent had an AC game That got close ever to them gameplay wise.
When it comes tho story? The franchise died to me story wise when they killed off Juno bumfuck nowhere IN A COMIC. A FUCKING COMIC! They buildt her up over the games and she just comes back lives for 2 minutes then dies to a nobody (nobody compared to game characters)
Who cares at this point about the story of AC when the writers dont give a fuck about it.
Seriously the ONLY THE ONLY REASON why I gave Odyssey a chance WAS because of Kassandra I really like her character and find it dumb that "Oh WoW she survived all this time carrying a trident or staff whatever the fuvk but the moment she let go of it she died" now MY FRIENDS IN THE EMPEROR If they just didnt want Kassandra around for future games they could have had her either have a fight where she dies protecting the new protagonist (whatever the fuck her name is) or just fuck off back to greece and ride off into the sunset with her declaring "Im going home" BLAM DONE She can live out a Mortal life.
So when it comes to AC canon is BS so the only way to go on with it without getting angry by declaring that the headcanons we have like again Kassandra just going home or the headcanin that the comic events just didnt happen this is the only way one can hsndle the AC franchise story without anger.
Oh yeah the other way is to only come back whenever they have a game at one of your favorite period of history and wait until there is a sale for it like idk Goty edition for 15 euro? Maybe

God, star wars fans are so contentious when it comes to canon. Especially the anti gray jedi crowd. They'll dismiss the idea altogether and say that the gray jedi were just fanfiction and never a real thing, despite the fact that they were a part of legends, including comics and video games, and are even hinted at by some of disney's new canon, all because they dislike the idea of a gray jedi because of their idea of how the force works. Some of them literally believe that you can only have balance in the force by clinging only to the light side.

Its a huge series, thats where the mess up happened. Different games, characters, points in time and history, and all its meant for different experiences, but its all meant to tie back to a story. Templar vs Assassin. Freedom vs control. But then take a series already interesting and add another race and lore on top, now we have the mythologies, which many forget the isu are not gods but another race and their name is forgotten. The things they do are seen as magic because thats what humans see it as. Personally i play for the historical and lore part, and then adding secret orders with history figures, like the games have all the potential in the world to be great experiences, just don’t let one ruin it for all. But at the same time, try it.
And this is mostly in defense of Odyssey since i seen in see it get the most hate. If u play the game mercenaries were basically the assassin for hire at the times. U walk go around getting information and killing ppl. And experiencing a whole world ontop of a hidden one aka the isu.
The point, have fun and choose

The problem with Kassandra is that they keep bringing her back all the time. She was in Nexus, where she has a hidden blade even though it doesn't make sense for her to have one at that time. She is going to be in Assassin's Creed Jade and helps Wei Ju. And we saw her in Assassin's Creed Valhalla in the Crossover DLC. It's really hurting the story of AC games if "Kassandra was always doing something in the back" keeps popping up all the time. Since Shadows is from Ubisoft Quebec, I'm pretty sure she'll pop up there eventually too.

I disagree with some of the things you said like Kassandra being immortal. She is still an interesting characrer and her book was awesome. But in my head canon, Alexios is the Eagle Bearer. He just seems like a better protagonist for Odyssey and I had more fun with him. I've thought about how I can get over Kassandra being in the Valhalla crossover and my idea is that Kassandra was trained by Darius after he saved her from the Cult. She was given her own wrist blade she helped design and Alexios as the mercenary protagonist would later meet her and give her the staff in which it would make her immortal. I think Odyssey is an amazing game. Even though dialoge choices can be game breaking, that logic would follow with how many people your allowed to kill in the game. It's just a slippery slope and some fans think it should be one way while others think its ok or should be something else. Maybe Ubisoft should have a limit on how many kills you can get while playing the main story.

2:50 preach. Odyssey really doesn't break canon except for the dialog choices whose outcomes are insanely different from one another (and the gender choice but they confirmed Kassandra to be the canonical Eagle Bearer so that fixes that). But yeah, the bigger problem is them 'adding' tons of new rules that don't belong in Assassin's Creed in the first place. Like how now, all mythological creatures are fair game as long as they're explained away as some Isu experiment. One of the reasons I appreciate Darby McDevitt is how carefully he crafted the mythological parts of Valhalla so that you can skip Asgard and Jotunheim entirely and get all you need to know from the Anomalies video. And even if you play those parts, you are at peace knowing that Fenrir wasn't canonically a big bad wolf but it's just how Eivor interpreted those long forgotten memories that ended up being molded by her religious beliefs.

    Am I problematic?
I want to play as a fictional African samurai character not as a historical figure.
Just because Yasuke was "vague" doesn't automatically mean he ticked all the boxes to be seemed as fictional.
Why didn't we do this for Valhalla?
There was a real historical black Viking named..
    Geirmund Hjørson, called Heljarskinn.
An outsider perspective in a foreign land.
It was consistent that we always had fictional protagonist who maybe inspired by a real life counterpart.
And there was an established reason why it was always a fictional character you played as.

AC Odyssey should have not been made and it not canon to me. The story is dumb af and makes no sense. AC Odyssey should have been about Darius or Ubisoft should have made a trilogy for Bayek.

my biggest problem with canon in ac is that i played ac odyssey as alexios and i see kassandra in valhalla

One was the cannon eagle bearer. I don’t think Kassandra being the Eagle bearer is an issue in the slightest tbh.

@@Zikuto_ Kind of is, women werent allowed to become spartans or be olympic participants, the core of the character already contradicts it. And Alexios also feels better as the protagonist. Ive played through ac odyssey 5 times with kassandra being 2 runthroughs and Kassandra doesnt work nearly as well as alexios does

@@saikyue4462 To you Ubi made their choice of cannon character so idk what to tell you. Kassandra is a mercenary also not a spartan. Also why are we pulling the historical accuracy card in Assassin’s Creed? It’s Inspired by historical events but it’s also sci-fi
