Connecting phrases in jazz improvisation (when the chords change)

  • This lesson is about learning to connect our phrases to begin and end them where we want, and not just stop and restart whenever the chords change. The first step to achieving more freedom is to be able to play continuously over chord changes and land on a chord note when there is a change. We'll see plenty of examples and some advanced options as well.

    Thank you very much! Love your calm way of teaching. For me as a beginner, the B7 to Bb7 transition is also a good way of thinking how to play outside (in this case outside of the Bb7 scale) in a controlled way. Sounds great 👍

    4:58 I can't not hear "Cruella de Vil..." for this phrase. :)

      You’d need to precede the walk up to the Ab in bar two with a walk up to the Eb in bar 1. And then it would defeat the whole purpose of the lesson having the same lick from bar 1 transposed up a fourth
      in bar two.
      But yeah….
