  • A trip to the Yorkshire Dales to Malham for a waterfall walk with a view whilst visiting Janet’s Foss and Gordale Scar before finishing up on top of Malham Cove.
This is where a scene from Harry Potter and the deathly hallows was filmed.
Gordale Scar is a huge limestone ravine formed by water from melting glaciers many years ago and Janet’s Foss is a beautiful waterfall making for a great photo opportunity or a wild swim.

The one feature of Janet's Foss, that no video or photograph can do justice to, and has to experienced in person, is the heady smell of garlic from the ramsons, (wild garlic plants,) as you approach the pool at the foot of the falls. These plants grow wild in abundance around Janet's Foss pool, and its always worth pulling a few when you're there in season, as they make a delicious addition to a tossed green salad.

It always used to amaze me, when i saw the sheep on ledges halfway up (or probably halfway down,) the almost sheer edges of the ravine on the way to Gordale scar. There didn't seem to be anyway they could have climbed up all that way, so I have to assume that they'd all slipped down from ledges above.

I tried to conquer my vertigo, confronting it by walking up the very edge of the Malham limestone pavement to take a photograph of the view from the edge. I coped OK but it didn't work in the long term, and I still get dizzy, even travelling on escalators without walls on either side, but at least I got an excellent photograph from the edge.

Nice one and heading there myself for the first time tomorrow, weather depending. Looks a spectacular circular walk but quite busy, so I think I will try and get there early. Canny watch, cheers Alan

Is the route marked ??? What are the chances of a 'first timer' getting lost ??? Thanks.

last 3 times I've been to photograph Janets Foss, I've had semi-naked women to contend with! Seems to be mobbed with swimmers now.... not that they last long in the c-c-c-old water ;-)

Yes when I went there were a few people who were wild swimming.
I think I would on a hot day too cool off. 🙂
