I want to add something: this kiss doesn't need to be traumatic to be wrong. Even if she isn't traumatized by it, he still had no rights to do that to her and it was beyond unprofessional, and she's in her right to complain, no matter how hard it was for her

To the men and women who are saying " but she was laughing later" , i was 13 years old when I was going to my friend's birthday party with my mom when i was SA'd by a complete stranger on the street. Other men on the street acted like i was lying. I was heart broken. But i went to the party and laughed and and smiled and danced, basically enjoyed myself to the fullest. I'm 30 now. Its been 17 years and I still haven't forgotten the feeling. I curl up into a ball all by myself every time i remember, knowing full well that no one will understand. Lastly, get some counseling or therapy so your current or future boyfriend/girlfriend doesn't have to deal with your past baggage if your crawling into a ball.
What you are describing is, similar to what happened to me in a different scenario, the memory stays and affects a lot, no matter how much we try to just let it go. It is amazing how a lot of people, say we women overreact to this feeling of being always scared and worried about this kind of aggression, completely ignoring the stats that 1 out of 3 women/girls are sexually attacked at least once in our lives, as if 1 out of 3, were a small number.
And you can BET that if Jeni threw a fit or was visibly upset, either in the imediate aftermath of the kiss or later on, people would complain about it, saying she's making something out of nothing. There's never a good reaction for a victim to have: they'll always be judged more than their own harasser/ab*ser.
Yeah, you can't win. If you get angry, you're 'too emotional' and 'attention seeking'. If you try to appear like you're fine, obviously you lied about what happened/it wasn't actually that bad. If you keep quiet, you're blamed for not speaking out and if you ever DO want to speak about it later, you'll get blamed and questioned about why you waited. If you appear too calm or collected, you must be lying too and obviously rehearsed your lines. There is no 'right way' to be a victim. Everything you do or say is under this insane amount of scrutiny, while all the evidence against the abuser is twisted into an excuse or call for sympathy. I greatly applaud Jenni Hermoso for speaking out, that was brave AF. But what was done to her after is the worst nightmare of every assault victim come true, and as D'Angelo mentioned, not everyone in this situation would have received the support and justice she thankfully eventually received.

Just a couple of weeks ago a girl has been r*ped by SEVEN awful guys here in Italy and the whole situation is even more baffling because people are sending thoughts and prayers to the perpetrators on TikTok and IG and the judge said they were innocent of the crime because "the didn't understand she didn't give them consent". Yep. They punched her, kicked her, insulted her, she was hurting, bleeding, passing out multiple times, and that's apparently what consent looks like. One of the guys commented on this saying it was almost digusting and they looked like "1000 dogs on a kitten". Apparently they were also planning their "revenge" as a punishment for reporting them to the authorities. The mother of one of the guys commented saying she kinda got what she deserved for basically being a wh*re.
The mothers calling the girl a whore is beyond disgusting, it's inhumane. I hope the girl gets proper therapy and help, as for her rapists, they deserve nothing but the death penalty.

As a Portuguese person, “machismo” and “sexismo” do not mean the same (though they’re inherently related). “Sexismo” means “sexism”, “machismo” basically means the same as misogyny, only that instead of emphasizing the subjugation of women (and of anyone applicable), it emphasizes the supremacy of men. I personally find the term “misogyny” to be the most useful in any instance, but they are basically interchangeable. However, from my experience, the term “misoginia” is still in very low use and widely unknown in the Iberian Peninsula (and probably in other Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries too, I assume). The landscape of social issues discourse is quite different here (and often way behind imo, even among the youth), largely due to a significant linguistic and cultural barrier.
On the "perfect victim" note: I think it's also important to realize there's a BIG difference in her being asked by media about the situation after the "apology", and her talking in a union statement. Once she knew her union, her team, and many other players believed her and we're willing to back her, she wouldve felt like any more comfortable telling the truth, knowing she'd be protected from retribution
To be fair, her first statement defending the kiss wasn't even written by her, it was written by the RFEF and sent to media companies without her permission.
Love how the clip where he's chanting "I will not resign" pans to the crowd and a *massively overwhelming majority* of the people within said crowd are men... And of the less than half-dozen women who are there, only two are clapping, while almost all of the men are clapping and smiling and listening intently to what he's saying. The women are either clapping and looking incredibly uncomfortable, or they're staring deadpan at him, or they're looking down at their laps or phones and not even making any sort of eye contact with him. Just goes to show that high-power men will often defend other high-power men, even against the most deplorable acts imaginable.
As a Spanish person one thing that bothers me is how (mostly) right wing people say she couldn't feel violated cause she partied with the girls afterwards. One of the RFEF workers even leaked a video of her in the bus. This just shows how unaware they are of women's experiences cause time and time again this has happens to my friends and I. When were young, at anime conventions and as adults, at clubs. A stranger touches you or kisses you without your permission and in the moment you don't do anything so you don't ruin the fun. What's going on in your mind is a very different thing.
I'm not defending what he did in any way, but to be honest it kinda feels like people are pressuring her to feel worse about it. Everyone is telling her she should be mad and she should be angry and she's a victim, if SHE feels that way then yes she is entitled to feel that way, but it very much seems like people are almost insisting that she be as mad about it as they are.
no i 100% agree about the 'not ruining the fun' part. i was harassed a couple times at work this week- it was a public tabling event and if I acted upset after that, no one would wanna come up to our table. plus its so humiliating to not only be harassed but to be visibly upset by it in front of other people- it feels like admitting their control over u to let them ruin your time.

I feel so horrible for Jenni. It's a really bad feeling to be disrespected in this way. Recently, I was kissed by a strange man while walking down the street in broad daylight. I was so shocked that I froze up. I felt so disturbed and vulnerable after that moment. I was also in a foreign country so I didn't know anyone or who to call about this situation. Sexual assault is never ever okay!
My abuser tried to take my life, and a few years later showed up on tiktok as the "glonky" dude.. I was shown nothing but aggression and hate after coming out, and told that I was a liar, regardless of literal photo evidence that this man has been in my life and stalked me. I even had to report to police over handing them evidence of him vandalizing buildings in my area, and got told by them that his stalking and harming me was "not their problem". Nevermind the fact he has a facebook with photos of all the women he has abused or stalked. It will never stop amazing me that some people can literally just get away with anything, and have people supporting them, even after causing deaths and life long damage to people.

I'm over 40 and these stories still happening make me... very tired and just beyond upset. On behalf of men I'm sorry some of us are like this :( Its sad how many indecent men there are. I promise that there's some good cookies tho. Just not enough. I wish so dearly to get to the point where men and women are treated equally. There will be some differences in how things are handled between the two, but overall it would be fair and equal. Maybe it wont happen soon, but I believe it will happen eventually. All we have to do is treat and teach our next generation right.

As a female soccer player, I’m not surprised this happened and I’m even less surprised that people are excusing the behavior. I’m only a high school level player but ever since I’ve started playing I’ve noticed how vile men’s soccer fans can be towards women and girls, the things me and my fellow players have heard on the field from our own teammates on the boys team is shocking. It’s unfair that we have to deal with these things and they get swept under the rug

I may not play soccer (I am more of a dance girl myself lol) but some men that I know in discord often when woman sports come around will watch just to sexualize the players. I mean they will sexualize any woman in the general vicinity (only a handful of the men luckly, its just they are the loudest people), but they get extra enthusiastic when it comes to woman in sports.

I'm from brazil. football is kind of a big deal here. we had streams for the men's world cup with millions of spectators at the same time for the men's world cup and it was pretty much under control, but one of our biggest streams had to disable comments for the women's cup, even with half the audience or less, because the raid of misoginistic comments were overwhelming. women are not welcome yet in sports and that is just a reality. much has changed in this cup, we actually got decent sponsors for our team for the first time ever and I can only assume it was the same for other countries, but we still have a LONG way to go
As a Spanish woman following this story, I just want to add two points: One is that the first statement we all read from Jenni Hermoso that came out shrugging off Rubiales' actions (6:39) is absolutely fake, made up, definitely not said by her, but probably falsified by the RFEF. Which shows once again the length at which this powerful group of men will go to protect each other from the consequences of obvious SA. The other thing is that this is not the first time Rubiales is involved in controversy. From being openly opposed to the profesionalization of women's football in 2021, to paying orgies with money from the federation, and personally arranging and securing a 40 million euro commision for the RFEF for taking the World Cup to Saudi Arabia this year (a starting point for an ongoing investigation into more related corruption, and we could definitely continue discussing the ethics of the decision in the first place). His SA on Jenni Hermoso is just the tip of the iceberg for a person that has the world "entitlement" written all over his face. And the comment me and my friends heard the most about in the days right after the assault: "If this is what he does openly and with no regrets infront of the cameras, what does he do when no one is looking?"

As I've said all the time these past few days: it is infuriating that women don't get a break, even during the best day of their career, even after proving themselves to the entire world. They still are subjected to gender violence, assholes still believe wholeheartedly that they are entitled to their bodies whenever they please, just because they feel like it. Nothing we do or say matters. No matter how high we climb someone can ruin the best days of our lives and make us feel powerless and minute. It's so exhausting.
people “not believing” what happened when it was on camera and captured at several different angles makes my blood boil. most of us are never taken seriously but when there’s irrefutable proof and people still choose to be on the side of the assailant… just disgusting.
always reminds me of one horrible statistic in particular... in father/daughter child sexual abuse cases with irrefutable proof (i.e. hard biological evidence or photos/videos of the abuse), 50% of mothers will still insist that the child is lying about the abuse. _fifty. percent._ undeniable evidence, some cases as far as a video that can be played in front of the mother's face, and 50% of those moms will _still_ blame the child and stand by the father. that's not even considering the cases _without_ such definitive proof. what that amount of denial and blame does to someone who's been assaulted... it's horrifying to think about. i think back on my own experiences, how long it took me to realize that being called a liar _did not make me one._ i don't know what the sickness is that leads people to look at video footage of sexual assault and turn around to call the victim a liar. but whatever it is, it runs deep in our society.
@@asterling4It's the remnants of years and years (decades, centuries even) where women weren't legally considered fully grown human being, going from their father's authority to their husband's authority. And it only ended relatively recently (in my country, women couldn't vote before the mid 40s). At best, they're considered like childs, at worst they're barely even considered humans. That's the only way it makes sense, as horrifying as it is.

She didn’t leave him until I came forward about my experience with him, and even then, it seemed like she was more heartbroken that she had to end the relationship with him over being heartbroken by what that man did to me. She’s spent her whole life with abusive men, and she falls so hard for the false reality they present and often prioritizes them over her children. I understand a lot of what you’re saying, but I’ll never recover from always being second to her partners. I think it’s understandable why some mothers handle those situations that way if they’re also being abused, but I also think it’s absolutely inexcusable and destroys the child in that situation. I empathize with the abuse she also went through, but I could never discredit my child
As someone who was assaulted as a kid, and has to see their assailant at this year’s family reunion, and every other one, my heart truly goes out to this monster’s victims. The social pressure to not convict…to have to see their face over and over just to remember how they made you feel all those years ago…having people who you are supposed yo TRUST watch out for them and protect them, meanwhile making you feel crazy…that shit never goes away…therapy helps but only so much…
If you’re an adult, I’d try to distance yourself as much as possible. It took me 22 years to finally tell my parents about a family member sexually abusing me and they both believed me- I was so scared. They cut off contact from them.
I'm not a Spaniard but I am Hispanic. A mother will go so far to defend her son before listening to women or admitting that her son could possibly do something wrong. Our culture has still far to go when it comes to misogyny.
I was gonna make a similar post, but honestly like the person above said, the older I get the more I see this happening in every culture. The "machismo" with Hispanic people is incredibly deep-rooted and I do think there's less Hispanic people that condemn it than, for example, second Gen Americans, but holy shit is it so much worse than younger me could've ever thought.

She was also pressured into appearing in the video where Luis Rubiales 'apologizes' to give explanations but she refused to do so as it wasn't her fault. Imagine having the nerve to ask her to do that to save his ass!!! We as a country are so disgusted by his actions. At that same match Luis even grabbed his crotch close to a sixteen year old girl when the goal happened!!! What type of behavior is that coming from a sports president?? D’Angelo as an SA survivor THANK YOU for not putting the video clip of Jenni’s assault in here. It’s a minute detail, but that matters more than you know.
I think this is worth clarifying: 1) Sometimes victims initially defend their abuser because they are in shock and they just want to forget about it. Reliving a traumatic experience can be painful and difficult and sometimes avoiding it is easier. 2) They think no one will believe them, a very real fear. They might initially cover for their abuser if they think they have no chance of winning a case. 3) Their abuser has significant power over them, and the ability to ruin their career/life if they speak up. and more. I think all 3 were going on here, mainly #3 because if women speak up in an industry they tend to get blacklisted-- but once she saw support, she felt confident to come forward. This incident is FILMED, you can see her shock and resistance in 4K, clearly this was nonconsensual. Edit: Also you don't need to be "traumatized" or look traumatized in order to call out someone for sexual assult/harassment. Often times people don't show their trauma or suffering, but even IF she was fine afterwards that doesn't mean what he did was okay.

I live in New Zealand and went to a couple of games. We were very aware that this incident was basically the straw that broke the camel's back after a lengthy period of mistreatment of players in the larger Spanish women's representative group. I wish the bullshit prior to the tournament from Spain had been covered in this video as well because it just highlights how absolutely vile some of these men featured and the RFEF are when it comes to the treatment of women in the sport in that country. Spain had huge numbers of neutral country supporters in the final. We wanted them to win for themselves and for the other women who refused to attend in protest against the treatment they were subjected to from their coach. Because honestly, fuck their coach. We were cheering on the players. Even the non-football members of my family sat down to support them. We all celebrated like they were our own team when that final whistle blew. But then, of course, Rubiales had to do his thing after the match, grabbing his crotch and then later SAing Hermoso. We were all speechless. My nephew is quite naive, is at the grunting rather than speaking stage of life, and seldom uses profanities, but he said "Did he just do what I think he did? What a fucking arsehole".
I'm also Spanish, and I think the funniest thing is that they fire this guy over THIS. Not that it's not bad, but on the same match he grabbed his balls in front of the damn princess who's a minor. And before all this, he spent the organization's money on a trip to the US and spent it on GODDAMN PROSTITUTES. At least they are getting to him finally

We can be aware of this and question these ideas so we can help deconstruct the ways our discussions are biased towards maintaining the status quo (which is, in this case, the continuation of abuse).
Thanks so much for recognizing non-famous women that experience this. I had a supervisor at Ford Motor Company (not a dealership, the mothership) similarly assault me when I was a fresh-faced, 24yo engineer. Even the PPO I was granted against the supervisor didn't lead to demotion let alone termination. #MeToo was hard to weather a few years after. While my experience was so relatable to the #MeToo stories, I obviously don't have nearly the value of established celebrities. Thank you for making this. Men that do these things need correction from other men since they obviously won't respect guidance from women.

Sexual assault is so common for women that it is seen as too extreme when women actually seek legal action to protect themselves against it…. Men feel entitled to women’s bodies so much so, that they have less empathy than the victims they assaulted. I know because this is something I’ve struggled with…it’s worst when you feel responsible for their behavior and like no one would believe it wasn’t your fault.
I love his “evidence” being that they had a “good relationship”. Regardless of if that is or isn’t true, the majority of sexual assaults are carried out by people the victim knew and often trusted. You can been on good terms, friendly, and you can still violate someone.
The worst thing for me is that he took away HER moment, she won the biggest tournament there is and that man made it about himself. I hope she will get justice but there will never be the possibility of looking back at her accomplishment without thinking of this moment. It must have felt so weird for the women in that conference to be surrounded by men clapping for someone who commited SA. The way that room would immediately feel dangerous to be in is so gross to think about.

I also think the way he hugged them all was already inappropriate, even worse than the kiss. Trying to joke about my trauma was basically how I started processing it. It was a way to distance myself from it so I could, in a way, pretend it happened to someone else.
God that feeling is so real. I tend to suffer from some heavy depersonalization/derealization from time to time, and it's allowed me to separate myself from things in the past. Of course, that pain is still there, but if I push it to the back of my mind enough it's like it happened to someone else.
People like us with trauma and disabled people in general need to be able to have a sense of humour about it to survive. My own mother and I have used humour to cope for all my life with both of our disabilities, and its a valuable coping skill to know.
My mom's a psychologist. I just want you to know that humor as a coping mechanism is a healthy way to begin processing things and is not a bad thing or you doing this wrong. Healing is a journey and sometimes the first step involves a chuckle, and that's okay. Your healing is more important than looking like a "good" victim who only ever weeps about it.

I was the first person at my high school to take someone of the same gender to a dance as my date. She didn't go to my school, but a good number of my friends had known her for a while because most people (including my family) thought she was just my best friend. Lots of girls went with each other to dances, but rumors were already starting to fly about me. That night at the dance we did photos, etc...but were way more circumspect than most of the heteronormative couples. I truly believe the fact that we are both high femme had a whole lot to do with everything else that happened. A few weeks later, a couple friends and I started getting harrassed in the senior quad at lunch. Amongst these were some pointedly homophobic and biphobic comments which I ignored. I can't tell you exactly how it happened but the moment I stood up and stepped to this one star athlete asshole and told him to f off, suddenly everything was violent. We were hit, kicked, shoved--unopened soda cans were thrown in our direction to get them to explode on us, and one hit my shin so hard that it split the skin. They grabbed my [straight] friend's bag and took all her cash. The whole time calling us "freaks." Oh, and two teachers saw it all, and FINALLY admonished the boys to "settle down now." I grabbed the friend who had been mugged, and we went to the principal to get her to call the cops. Instead, the principal took $20 from her own wallet and gave it to my friend, then sent us back to class. End of story. The next day some girls from the very prep side of things had decided to do the White Feminism Special™️, and were passing out purple ribbons to show support for us....let's face it, it was mainly me. My friends were just caught in the crossfire. The solution these Student Council members had come up with was to take everyone involved and set up a round table where we went around the circle and each got to talk for one minute. So let me set the scene. Eight reps from the school in the form of student council members, etc. Seventeen identified athletes who attacked us. Four victims willing to participate--all of whom ID'd straight except for me, and I was BARELY out before the dance. We each got equal time to defend our positions. Time which ended up being spent arguing whether or not I had been kissing my [straight] friend Ana to "intentionally rile up the boys." Oh, yeah. All sapphic relationships are actually just porn for the straight male gaze to consume. I forgot to mention that part. SORRY. I participated in precisely one and a quarter of these meetings. Sitting there for ⅚ of the time listening to people debate my sexuality and how everyone else felt about my 120lb ass getting kicked by a bunch of lacrosse players was just not it for me. I ended up dropping out about a month later, after my tires had been slashed and the cops had to come repeatedly to walk me to my car when I closed up the store I worked at after school. Btw, I am sitting a mile from that high school right now. It is where my queer identifying kid will go to high school if we don't move like we plan to. The thing that shocks people the most is that I could be in the Castro in under an hour right now....my dad fundraised for Harvey Milk. Yeah, I'm a crusty old Xennial lady, times they are a-changin'--but this happens *everywhere*. The attitudes are every bit as present as ever. AFAB bodies are always seen as existing for consumption. Always. Then we get blamed and shamed when we say, "um, actually, I dont mean to be an imposition, but if you don't mind toooooo terribly, I'd prefer not to be touched." You mentioned the calls for Jorge Vilda to resign, and how he is problematic as well, but it goes deeper than just his support for Rubiales. In September 2022 15 players on the team wrote to the federation asking to not be included in future teams due to “unprofessional conduct” which is reported to include coaches forcing them to keep their hotel doors open and inspecting their bags without their permission. People started calling for Vilda to be fired then and of course he refused and the federation and Rubiales immediately backed him and attacked the players, but what did you expect. Just goes to show that they all have a history of this and that the situation with the kiss is far from a one off. Oh also Vilda’s dad is the head of the women’s football department so I’m sure his appointment was based purely on merit and there was no nepotism at all.
Vilda's only coached the women's NT, the lower levels and the top. He wasn't hired for his previous victories but for following the regime's rules. He must go.

The main thing I kept hearing before the tournament started was of Vilda’s conduct and the player’s attempt to unify against him and how the were VILIFYED by ‘The Powers That Be’ and in that context Rubiales’ name kept coming up. What’s wild is this story is even bigger-Spain didn’t even field their best team at the World Cup because players already were protesting and refused to play because of the federation’s abuse. As a woman, a lot of the time you will hear it’s just a joke, a bit of fun. Have a sense of humour. The pressure to not express discomfort is huge. They just won the World Cup, she is allowed to be overjoyed at that. She may even believe she was detracting from her teammates success by objecting. He was an authority figure and she may well have had an affection for him too which further complicates it. He still overstepped and his reaction compounded the issue terribly.

What you are describing is, similar to what happened to me in a different scenario, the memory stays and affects a lot, no matter how much we try to just let it go. It is amazing how a lot of people, say we women overreact to this feeling of being always scared and worried about this kind of aggression, completely ignoring the stats that 1 out of 3 women/girls are sexually attacked at least once in our lives, as if 1 out of 3, were a small number.

Yeah, you can't win. If you get angry, you're 'too emotional' and 'attention seeking'. If you try to appear like you're fine, obviously you lied about what happened/it wasn't actually that bad. If you keep quiet, you're blamed for not speaking out and if you ever DO want to speak about it later, you'll get blamed and questioned about why you waited. If you appear too calm or collected, you must be lying too and obviously rehearsed your lines. There is no 'right way' to be a victim. Everything you do or say is under this insane amount of scrutiny, while all the evidence against the abuser is twisted into an excuse or call for sympathy. I greatly applaud Jenni Hermoso for speaking out, that was brave AF. But what was done to her after is the worst nightmare of every assault victim come true, and as D'Angelo mentioned, not everyone in this situation would have received the support and justice she thankfully eventually received.

Just a couple of weeks ago a girl has been r*ped by SEVEN awful guys here in Italy and the whole situation is even more baffling because people are sending thoughts and prayers to the perpetrators on TikTok and IG and the judge said they were innocent of the crime because "the didn't understand she didn't give them consent". Yep. They punched her, kicked her, insulted her, she was hurting, bleeding, passing out multiple times, and that's apparently what consent looks like. One of the guys commented on this saying it was almost digusting and they looked like "1000 dogs on a kitten". Apparently they were also planning their "revenge" as a punishment for reporting them to the authorities. The mother of one of the guys commented saying she kinda got what she deserved for basically being a wh*re.
The mothers calling the girl a whore is beyond disgusting, it's inhumane. I hope the girl gets proper therapy and help, as for her rapists, they deserve nothing but the death penalty.

As a Portuguese person, “machismo” and “sexismo” do not mean the same (though they’re inherently related). “Sexismo” means “sexism”, “machismo” basically means the same as misogyny, only that instead of emphasizing the subjugation of women (and of anyone applicable), it emphasizes the supremacy of men.
I personally find the term “misogyny” to be the most useful in any instance, but they are basically interchangeable. However, from my experience, the term “misoginia” is still in very low use and widely unknown in the Iberian Peninsula (and probably in other Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries too, I assume). The landscape of social issues discourse is quite different here (and often way behind imo, even among the youth), largely due to a significant linguistic and cultural barrier.

On the "perfect victim" note: I think it's also important to realize there's a BIG difference in her being asked by media about the situation after the "apology", and her talking in a union statement. Once she knew her union, her team, and many other players believed her and we're willing to back her, she wouldve felt like any more comfortable telling the truth, knowing she'd be protected from retribution

Love how the clip where he's chanting "I will not resign" pans to the crowd and a *massively overwhelming majority* of the people within said crowd are men... And of the less than half-dozen women who are there, only two are clapping, while almost all of the men are clapping and smiling and listening intently to what he's saying. The women are either clapping and looking incredibly uncomfortable, or they're staring deadpan at him, or they're looking down at their laps or phones and not even making any sort of eye contact with him. As a Spanish person one thing that bothers me is how (mostly) right wing people say she couldn't feel violated cause she partied with the girls afterwards. One of the RFEF workers even leaked a video of her in the bus. This just shows how unaware they are of women's experiences cause time and time again this has happens to my friends and I. When were young, at anime conventions and as adults, at clubs. A stranger touches you or kisses you without your permission and in the moment you don't do anything so you don't ruin the fun. What's going on in your mind is a very different thing.

My abuser tried to take my life, and a few years later showed up on tiktok as the "glonky" dude.. I was shown nothing but aggression and hate after coming out, and told that I was a liar, regardless of literal photo evidence that this man has been in my life and stalked me. I even had to report to police over handing them evidence of him vandalizing buildings in my area, and got told by them that his stalking and harming me was "not their problem". Nevermind the fact he has a facebook with photos of all the women he has abused or stalked. It will never stop amazing me that some people can literally just get away with anything, and have people supporting them, even after causing deaths and life long damage to people.

I may not play soccer (I am more of a dance girl myself lol) but some men that I know in discord often when woman sports come around will watch just to sexualize the players. I mean they will sexualize any woman in the general vicinity (only a handful of the men luckly, its just they are the loudest people), but they get extra enthusiastic when it comes to woman in sports.

I'm from brazil. football is kind of a big deal here. we had streams for the men's world cup with millions of spectators at the same time for the men's world cup and it was pretty much under control, but one of our biggest streams had to disable comments for the women's cup, even with half the audience or less, because the raid of misoginistic comments were overwhelming. women are not welcome yet in sports and that is just a reality. much has changed in this cup, we actually got decent sponsors for our team for the first time ever and I can only assume it was the same for other countries, but we still have a LONG way to go
As a Spanish woman following this story, I just want to add two points: One is that the first statement we all read from Jenni Hermoso that came out shrugging off Rubiales' actions (6:39) is absolutely fake, made up, definitely not said by her, but probably falsified by the RFEF. Which shows once again the length at which this powerful group of men will go to protect each other from the consequences of obvious SA.
The other thing is that this is not the first time Rubiales is involved in controversy. As I've said all the time these past few days: it is infuriating that women don't get a break, even during the best day of their career, even after proving themselves to the entire world. They still are subjected to gender violence, assholes still believe wholeheartedly that they are entitled to their bodies whenever they please, just because they feel like it. always reminds me of one horrible statistic in particular... in father/daughter child sexual abuse cases with irrefutable proof (i.e. hard biological evidence or photos/videos of the abuse), 50% of mothers will still insist that the child is lying about the abuse. _fifty. percent._ undeniable evidence, some cases as far as a video that can be played in front of the mother's face, and 50% of those moms will _still_ blame the child and stand by the father. that's not even considering the cases _without_ such definitive proof.
what that amount of denial and blame does to someone who's been assaulted... it's horrifying to think about. i think back on my own experiences, how long it took me to realize that being called a liar _did not make me one._
i don't know what the sickness is that leads people to look at video footage of sexual assault and turn around to call the victim a liar. but whatever it is, it runs deep in our society.

And it only ended relatively recently (in my country, women couldn't vote before the mid 40s).

She’s spent her whole life with abusive men, and she falls so hard for the false reality they present and often prioritizes them over her children. I think it’s understandable why some mothers handle those situations that way if they’re also being abused, but I also think it’s absolutely inexcusable and destroys the child in that situation. As someone who was assaulted as a kid, and has to see their assailant at this year’s family reunion, and every other one, my heart truly goes out to this monster’s victims. The social pressure to not convict…to have to see their face over and over just to remember how they made you feel all those years ago…having people who you are supposed yo TRUST watch out for them and protect them, meanwhile making you feel crazy…that shit never goes away…therapy helps but only so much…

This reminds me of the soldier who came back from the war and during the celebrations he grabbed a nurse, bent her over, and kissed her. The woman came forward years later and said it was assault and that she hadn't wanted it. Yet its such a glorified moment in American history, even a statue was built. I think this is worth clarifying:
1) Sometimes victims initially defend their abuser because they are in shock and they just want to forget about it. Reliving a traumatic experience can be painful and difficult and sometimes avoiding it is easier.
2) They think no one will believe them, a very real fear. They might initially cover for their abuser if they think they have no chance of winning a case.
3) Their abuser has significant power over them, and the ability to ruin their career/life if they speak up.

I think all 3 were going on here, mainly #3 because if women speak up in an industry they tend to get blacklisted-- but once she saw support, she felt confident to come forward. This incident is FILMED, you can see her shock and resistance in 4K, clearly this was nonconsensual.
Edit: Also you don't need to be "traumatized" or look traumatized in order to call out someone for sexual assult/harassment. Often times people don't show their trauma or suffering, but even IF she was fine afterwards that doesn't mean what he did was okay.

I live in New Zealand and went to a couple of games. We were very aware that this incident was basically the straw that broke the camel's back after a lengthy period of mistreatment of players in the larger Spanish women's representative group. I wish the bullshit prior to the tournament from Spain had been covered in this video as well because it just highlights how absolutely vile some of these men featured and the RFEF are when it comes to the treatment of women in the sport in that country. Spain had huge numbers of neutral country supporters in the final. We wanted them to win for themselves and for the other women who refused to attend in protest against the treatment they were subjected to from their coach. Because honestly, fuck their coach. We were cheering on the players. Even the non-football members of my family sat down to support them. We all celebrated like they were our own team when that final whistle blew. But then, of course, Rubiales had to do his thing after the match, grabbing his crotch and then later SAing Hermoso. We were all speechless. My nephew is quite naive, is at the grunting rather than speaking stage of life, and seldom uses profanities, but he said "Did he just do what I think he did? What a fucking arsehole".
I'm also Spanish, and I think the funniest thing is that they fire this guy over THIS. Not that it's not bad, but on the same match he grabbed his balls in front of the damn princess who's a minor. We can be aware of this and question these ideas so we can help deconstruct the ways our discussions are biased towards maintaining the status quo (which is, in this case, the continuation of abuse).
Thanks so much for recognizing non-famous women that experience this. I had a supervisor at Ford Motor Company (not a dealership, the mothership) similarly assault me when I was a fresh-faced, 24yo engineer. Even the PPO I was granted against the supervisor didn't lead to demotion let alone termination. #MeToo was hard to weather a few years after. While my experience was so relatable to the #MeToo stories, I obviously don't have nearly the value of established celebrities. Thank you for making this. Men that do these things need correction from other men since they obviously won't respect guidance from women.

Sexual assault is so common for women that it is seen as too extreme when women actually seek legal action to protect themselves against it…. Men feel entitled to women’s bodies so much so, that they have less empathy than the victims they assaulted. I know because this is something I’ve struggled with…it’s worst when you feel responsible for their behavior and like no one would believe it wasn’t your fault.

It must have felt so weird for the women in that conference to be surrounded by men clapping for someone who commited SA. The way that room would immediately feel dangerous to be in is so gross to think about.

Trying to joke about my trauma was basically how I started processing it. It was a way to distance myself from it so I could, in a way, pretend it happened to someone else.
God that feeling is so real. I tend to suffer from some heavy depersonalization/derealization from time to time, and it's allowed me to separate myself from things in the past. Of course, that pain is still there, but if I push it to the back of my mind enough it's like it happened to someone else.
People like us with trauma and disabled people in general need to be able to have a sense of humour about it to survive. My own mother and I have used humour to cope for all my life with both of our disabilities, and its a valuable coping skill to know.

I was wearing a shot dress while walking through the city centre. A man, who was on facetime with his friend, started filming me while they both loudly screamed/cheered, discussing my looks. I was the first person at my high school to take someone of the same gender to a dance as my date. She didn't go to my school, but a good number of my friends had known her for a while because most people (including my family) thought she was just my best friend. Lots of girls went with each other to dances, but rumors were already starting to fly about me. That night at the dance we did photos, etc...but were way more circumspect than most of the heteronormative couples.
I truly believe the fact that we are both high femme had a whole lot to do with everything else that happened.
A few weeks later, a couple friends and I started getting harrassed in the senior quad at lunch. Amongst these were some pointedly homophobic and biphobic comments which I ignored. I can't tell you exactly how it happened but the moment I stood up and stepped to this one star athlete asshole and told him to f off, suddenly everything was violent. We were hit, kicked, shoved--unopened soda cans were thrown in our direction to get them to explode on us, and one hit my shin so hard that it split the skin. They grabbed my [straight] friend's bag and took all her cash. The whole time calling us "freaks." Oh, and two teachers saw it all, and FINALLY admonished the boys to "settle down now."
I grabbed the friend who had been mugged, and we went to the principal to get her to call the cops. Instead, the principal took $20 from her own wallet and gave it to my friend, then sent us back to class. End of story.
The next day some girls from the very prep side of things had decided to do the White Feminism Special™️, and were passing out purple ribbons to show support for us....let's face it, it was mainly me. My friends were just caught in the crossfire. The solution these Student Council members had come up with was to take everyone involved and set up a round table where we went around the circle and each got to talk for one minute. So let me set the scene.
Eight reps from the school in the form of student council members, etc. Seventeen identified athletes who attacked us. Four victims willing to participate--all of whom ID'd straight except for me, and I was BARELY out before the dance. We each got equal time to defend our positions. Time which ended up being spent arguing whether or not I had been kissing my [straight] friend Ana to "intentionally rile up the boys."
Oh, yeah. All sapphic relationships are actually just porn for the straight male gaze to consume. I forgot to mention that part. SORRY.
I participated in precisely one and a quarter of these meetings. Sitting there for ⅚ of the time listening to people debate my sexuality and how everyone else felt about my 120lb ass getting kicked by a bunch of lacrosse players was just not it for me. I ended up dropping out about a month later, after my tires had been slashed and the cops had to come repeatedly to walk me to my car when I closed up the store I worked at after school.
Btw, I am sitting a mile from that high school right now. It is where my queer identifying kid will go to high school if we don't move like we plan to. The thing that shocks people the most is that I could be in the Castro in under an hour right now....my dad fundraised for Harvey Milk. Yeah, I'm a crusty old Xennial lady, times they are a-changin'--but this happens *everywhere*. The attitudes are every bit as present as ever.
AFAB bodies are always seen as existing for consumption. Always. You mentioned the calls for Jorge Vilda to resign, and how he is problematic as well, but it goes deeper than just his support for Rubiales. In September 2022 15 players on the team wrote to the federation asking to not be included in future teams due to “unprofessional conduct” which is reported to include coaches forcing them to keep their hotel doors open and inspecting their bags without their permission. People started calling for Vilda to be fired then and of course he refused and the federation and Rubiales immediately backed him and attacked the players, but what did you expect. Just goes to show that they all have a history of this and that the situation with the kiss is far from a one off. Oh also Vilda’s dad is the head of the women’s football department so I’m sure his appointment was based purely on merit and there was no nepotism at all.
Vilda's only coached the women's NT, the lower levels and the top. He wasn't hired for his previous victories but for following the regime's rules. He must go.
And during the press conference, didn't Rubiales speak directly to Vida and promised him to keep him as a coach for another four years? Yikes

Was LOOKING for a comment adressing this! The main thing I kept hearing before the tournament started was of Vilda’s conduct and the player’s attempt to unify against him and how the were VILIFYED by ‘The Powers That Be’ and in that context Rubiales’ name kept coming up.
This whole scenario was absolutely predictable. Why wouldn’t Rubiales and his friends believe that he could and would get away with this? This conduct has never been a problem in the past

At least the spanish goverment has open an investigation and all the female players and some male too are trying to get him dismissed. The mayority of the spanish population is against him, but sadly he has his group of people behind him and many contacts. What’s wild is this story is even bigger-Spain didn’t even field their best team at the World Cup because players already were protesting and refused to play because of the federation’s abuse. It’s been a huge story over the past few years and Spain basically got away with doing nothing about it until now. ik how you feel, I've had androphobia. going to therapy and learning to say no right away to men who could disappoint me instead of letting them make sexist comments until I couldn't handle anymore has done me wonders. also trying to be more understanding of the situation. while it sucks that most men are not agressors but still cannot relate to us to the point where they wont react appropriately to harrassment or even joke about it, it's not the end of the world. we don't have to tolerate or keep these men in our lives but we can move on knowing that we don't have to be scared of them. they are not evil and they aren't doing it on purpose. they can learn and we can choose to be there to see it or not, and if we choose to lose contact with them they'll not have any power over us anymore

Well for some reason in the last brief shot which was a close up of some of those clapping there were what looks like 2 women in the row behind the guys in the front who appear to be enthusiastically clapping as well. But, yeah the were way more women not clapping at all or doing some very unenthusiastic clapping than there are men [though there were a couple of them as well.]
Some additions that I can make as a Spanish viewer and that make the whole thing EVEN WORSE:
1) The first statement of Jenni Hermoso, issued through the RFEF in which she defends Luis Rubiales was falsified by the organization itself. The first and only time she makes a statement is through the union.
2) FIFA takes action by suspending Rubiales for 90 days and prohibiting him (or him through third parties) from contacting her -since during the plane ride back to Spain Jenni was pressured to appear with him in his first "apology" video-. It is AFTER this that his family (cousin and mother) set up the media circus directly addressing Jenni "Tell the truth, stop lying" and pressuring her, thus breaking the FIFA ban on contacting her.

As a woman, a lot of the time you will hear it’s just a joke, a bit of fun. Have a sense of humour. The pressure to not express discomfort is huge. They just won the World Cup, she is allowed to be overjoyed at that. She may even believe she was detracting from her teammates success by objecting. He was an authority figure and she may well have had an affection for him too which further complicates it. He still overstepped and his reaction compounded the issue terribly.
