Pietermaritzburg, also known as Maritzburg or PMB for short, has a rich history dating back to 1838. Here's a quick rundown:
Founders and Founding: Established by Voortrekkers (Dutch settlers) after their victory at Blood River. They named it after their leaders Piet Retief and Gerrit Maritz.
Early Years: Initially an agricultural village, it soon attracted British and German immigrants. The British took control in 1843 and built Fort Napier, a historical landmark today.
Capital City: Pietermaritzburg became the capital of the Natal Colony (now KwaZulu-Natal) in 1856 and remained so through various political changes until 1994. It briefly shared capital status with Ulundi before reclaiming the sole title in 2004.
Today, Pietermaritzburg is the second-largest city in KwaZulu-Natal, known for its Victorian architecture, botanical gardens, and rich cultural heritage.
Keep up the good work Bruce👌
Thanks, will do!
Thanks Bruce....you took us down memory lane, we have walked those streets and alleyways many times....but sadly, from your footage I only see degradation beneath all those beautiful old buildings ...a shadow of its former glory
Thank you for your comments, Libby! I did this video to create awareness of the current situation, sadly 😥
Hi. Thank you for this video. I have always wondered what pmb 😊looks like now. I worked in theater lane for the insurance brokers 30 years ago. I can't believe what a sad state the buildings are in. Hats off to you for walking with your cell phone in your hand so bravely. 😊
Thank you for your comments 🙏
So sad. PMB will never recover from this.
Sadly, have to agree!
So very sorry to see that PMB is just a sad shame of it's former self. Once a beautiful city. No longer.
All very lamentable!
