      All the shitty former soviet states watered down the standard, plus more teams in tournaments. Qualifying is championship standard nowadays.

      72 & 76 euros only four teams qualified, not really a proper final tournament just two semi finals, a final and a 3/4 PO match. 74 WC knocked out by Poland who finished 3rd in the finals. Point is, it was very hard to qualify in those days. The total opposite to these days where qualifying is a formality

    For me England was a great team with many excellent players: Lineker, Hoddle, Robson, Beardsley, Shilton, Barnes....

    Gascoigne should have been in that squad maybe even the team . Newcastle were in a relegation scrap and his sheer brilliance kept them up that year.

      The FA consigned this tournament to the bin like it never happened. One of better England teams evolved out of this for 1990 World Cup.

    Was it ever thus...breeze through qualifying for Euros and World Cups (usually) and then lucky to get out of the group stages when England get there. Not as good as we think we are.

    England qualified impressively for EURO'88, it was then a surprise how they struggled in the
    tournament itself losing all 3 games.

      They were with the ever-strongest Netherlands, USSR and Ireland in one group.
      The struggle started before the tournament start.

      Technically, the best team in group was Yugoslavia, who built a superb side for World Cup in 1990. Qualifying for Euros in 1988 was not hard.

      @@WZ-xu6in Ok, l worded it wrong, but technically, were the most gifted, which they produced in 1990 World Cup, and by 1992 was the best team in Europe before being expelled from Euro 1992 being replaced by there group runners up Denmark.

      @@user-md2bt8tt1n Jugoslavia, based on Crvena Zvezda, was very powerful team at the early 90s. Maybe not the best, but one of them (Netherlands, France, Germany too). All of them underrated Denmark so much :--)
