They dropped them due lack of demand. Expesive gun and less accurate than a good AR-15. The sales numbers needed to achieve economy of scale with the M96 never materialized. The end of the AWB and the arrival of the golden era the AR-15 and the cheapo AK kits would've doomed the rifle even if the company hasn't moved on to the XCR.
@@andrewweninger1059. I thought they DID make the BREN conversion? I've had 3 of them and won't part with the 1 have have left. Ha. Yes, Rob Arms really cut their weeners off on that one. Shoulda kept going with them no matter what other screwball guns they were making.
I had one just like this one. I replaced the roll pins on the op rod with the industrial strength replacements and strengthened the barrel removal button spring. I absolutely love the design. Unless something changed, Robinson Arms turned the page on the design and left owners to fend for themselves in supporting the platform. It's a shame really that people can't get past AR's and AK's to enjoy something else. I approached Robinson Arms about a licensing agreement to get parts produced, but it was not something they seemed interested in. Maybe someone else should try. I eventually gave up and sold mine.
I got them from a military contractor, but I forgot the name. When I get home I'll look them up. I may even have some spares but I'll let you know. It takes the weakness out of the design so highly recommended.
You want these: www.mcmaster.com/#95765a321/=12ca5ye From what I understand these are used for military applications. I have a bunch of them if you want I'll sent them for free. It will completely eliminate the possibility of those stock roll pins from failing. These are 2000 lbs breaking strength.
I have the recon model and I love it. I had one 20 inch barrel version like the one in this video when they first came out and it was a fine rifle. The 20 inch version retailed around $1650 new and I have $1500 in the recon version I have now. The guns are very hard to find so when they come up for sale expect to pay at least $1600. Eric I'm really happy you made this video because there are not many videos showcasing these rifles.
I tell you what. You guys have been doing a great job with this channel. I've been watching for years and I've seen how much evolution you guys have implemented into the channel. Your quality control has exceeded throughout the years and you've been doing a better job with each video that you make. Good shooting, and keep doing what you do best.
To clear up the "modularity" of the Stoner63, the rifle was actually flipped upside down in the LMG configuration. Pretty cool gun, Jerry Miculek's video explains that further.
Great video. I actually have one as a registered assault weapon in Calif. Its a great rifle, but I've probably haven't fired it in 8-10 years out of fear for lack of replacement parts if something breaks. Its a safe queen probably 99% condition. I wish R.A. would continue to support these rifles.
First of all, that rifle looks very nice. It's refreshing to see the grandfather of the AR and more so, something different than a run of the mil AR. And secondly, for as many years as ive been subbed to this channel, it never ceases to excite me to see your guys shooting range. I would LOVE to have a place loke that where i can hang back and really open up with my .300 Win Mag. So yeah, awesome.
Soo nice to see chad finally memorized there is something like a barber ^^ the many faces of chad to be continued =) glad to see you guys having fun with the challenge, you can almost feel the focus
This looks amazing. My father got to shoot one of these in the Corps and I have the original manual. It sucks that nobody is picking up on the idea of producing them.
Dig these videos on historically significant guns. Going back to your old milsurp videos, would be great to see some revisits in HD. Just picked up a Garand and an M1 Carbine to keep the M1917 bolt gun company. Videos like these keep me smiling between range trips
Video idea: AR torture test between similarly priced Direct Impingement rifle and a Piston operated rifle. Great video. I had no idea anyone had reproduced these. I thought they were pretty much lost to history. Truly awesome to see one running!
This is so cool. It shares the attitude behind the M16's invention such as modularity and portability, yet has features seen on light machine guns like belt fed ammunition and barrel change capabilities
Had the military adopted it, it would've been great for logistics. At the time, this gun was more reliable than the M-16 and the M-16A1, but this rifle might've had quirks of it's own. What they are, I have no idea, but had this gun been adopted and evolved, it would've been an even more amazing weapon than it already is.
rambokicksass77 Someone - it might have been Ian V Hogg - described the Stoner system as yielding "too heavy a submachine gun, too fragile a squad light support MG" and a couple of other things, but basically having the problem of being neither fish nor fowl but something unsatisfactorily in between. That it worked, I have no doubt - but possibly the modular system introduced complexities at the manufacturing stage that favoured a uniform design and gave the M16 the nod.
...my wife bought one for me back in '08...never appreciated it until recently...now I wish I could get a barrel in 6.5 Grendel...need to find one of those drum mags
Found an M96 Recon Carbine in a dusty local gunshow for $1400, with the original box, factory fired only. I looked at it for 5 months then saw 80% Stoner 63 flats are coming onto the market soon, stocks, grips and handguards are being 3D printed, other parts are coming online in a cottage industry.
I think im in love, i knew of the stoner 63 but this robinson is lovely. One day if i work my butt off id love to own one of these, be it from a previous owner or if someone else manufactures them.
Good video and awesome gun. I would love to own one, hope they would remake the gun! Keep up the good work as always guys!! You would think they would actually let you take a mag home with you and the gun you were protecting everyone around you with!!!
I saw one of those and spoke with the company rep at the NRA Convention in Charlotte, NC in 2000. I wanted the Bren Gun version but being a poor college student, well, you know how that goes! LOL
Hello, I have been a subscriber for over a year. I enjoy your site very much. I recently purchased a Hi Point 9mm. This gun is fantatic for the price. $145 for a new gun. This morning I fired 200 rounds at the range. Not one issue. I have always wanted a 45 cal hand gun and the dealer says he has one for the same $145. By the way I did pick up a Mosin Nagant 91/30 after I viewed your torture test. Sporterized it and it is an amazing hunting rifle.
I'd love to see the m96 back in production too. Wanted one when they came out, but never had the money. Apparently they quit making it because the costs were too high, sheet metal and welding vs. cnc machining an aluminum receiver.
Since we're talking about Robinson Arms, nobody is doing any proper reviews on their xcr line of rifles. Which seems odd because they seem to have it all. I know there is some controversy about them which needs to be addressed and your the guys for the job. I rarely make comments on CZcams but this has to be said. Great vids!
Aww man, 20 seconds in, I googled it because I was interested in looking at prices, but then I got to where you said they weren't being sold anymore and my heart broke.
I've got one...the w*fe bought it for me in '08...would like to see a disassembly video - it's a bear to completely strip (especially the gas piston) and the manual is much of a help...nice work - like to find (or cause to be manufactured) a barrel in 6.5 Grendel!!!
Thank you for the interesting video.Never knew about this gun.Could you please show us the inner of the gun and the gas-aystem.I am very curious about that. Thanks for all the good work and greetings from Germany.
I built my own version of this gun. An AR with a XProducts side charging upper, DD chrome mid length barrel, and an Adams Arms gas piston kit with a Fortis Rev rail.
That thing really does look more like an lmg than an assault rifle in 5.56 caliber. Hey, btw, could you boys do this kind of video on an M1A1 and this time using some really hot, long range .308/7,62x51 loads like Hornady SST, Lapua 170gr Lock Base or 155gr Scenar's or any of that sort ballistically..? Or maybe even one of your own handloads..? Out to 440yds of course. And have a shootout on lunch again, I always like to see a bit of healthy competition :D
Rob Arms really screwed up when they dropped making this. All stainless receiver and quick change barrels. Very nice.
