    It's interesting that many of these pairs of words can be combined to form new words. Probably the most common one is 多少. There is also 左右 ("approximately"). Another one I like is 上下. I think it is only used in 上下班 ("commute"). Perhaps there can be a sequel video about these kinds of words. The story of 东西 would certainly make an interesting item. :-)

      dongxi supposedly has a mythic origin something like they asked the king and he said look west then they asked again he said look east and when they still couldn't find it he was surprised because all the THINGS from west to east were royal property. There's a basket in the myth somewhere.
      In fact xi 4 west nest are etymologically related in Chinese, and a basket holds things as a nest holds eggs. so i think that may also be the origin?
      Anyway it's a metaphor for "every THING under the sun from East to West".

      It reminds me a lot about my native language, Dutch.
      We literally just glue words together to make a new one. English does that too, actually. Just not very often.

      @EverydayChinese  Před 5 lety +2

      你说的对,“差”也是“好”的一个反义词。
      “坏”和“差”都表示不好的意思。
      “坏”主要指人的不好(比如缺点多、品质恶劣),或者指具体的事物不好。比如:坏人,坏事,坏消息,坏天气;
      “差”主要指没有达到一定的标准。比如卫生条件差,坏境差,学习成绩差,衣服质量差。

      @EverydayChinese  Před 5 lety +1

      或者 is normally used in a statement in which options are presented.
      e.g. 我明天去或者后天去。
      还是 is usually used to provide choices or options when asking a question.
      e.g. 你喜欢喝茶还是咖啡?
      But you can also use还是 in a statement in below situations:
      1.when you don’t know or aren’t sure about something, you should use 还是.
      e.g. 我不知道这本书是他的还是我的。
      2.when you know something will not be changed no matter what happens.
