  • Join us on an unforgettable journey as we explore Dakar, Senegal, our last African port on the nine-month Ultimate World Cruise. In this video, we take you through a day filled with adventure and reflection on Day 181 of our cruise.
We begin our day with a ferry ride to Gore Island, a place with a haunting past as a slave trading hub, now a serene retreat with no cars, colorful buildings, and stunning ocean views. We explore the island's rich history at the slave museum, taste the local cuisine, and interact with the vibrant community.
The video also sheds light on the harsh realities faced by Dakar's residents. With overcrowding, pollution, and extreme poverty, the city's struggle for basic necessities is evident. Despite the challenges, we find moments of beauty and resilience in the spirit of the local people.

It’s important for us to these areas through the eyes of tourists. Things do change over time, and I’m glad RC was willing to try this port.

Great episode. Never heard of Gorée. And Dakar looked like it was quite an eye opening experience. We love learning about new places. Thanks for sharing another adventure with us.
p.s. Now I want to try some La Gazelle Beer. 😆

Another interesting video. I didn't realise that Senegal was such a poor country. It's so unpleasant to be so intimidated by the vendors that made you feel unsafe. We had a similar experience in Jamaica.
You'll definitely be fine in Tenerife!

This was hard to watch. Probably even harder to experience. Part of me thinks it's understandable that the vendors were aggressive - they are desperate to support their families. Except, then I wonder what that desperation will cause them to do. Thank you for being willing to go and share your experience.
If only there was some oversight / organization they would probably get more tourist $. Maybe they'll see that they are scaring off the very people they need to do business with, and they'll decide to work together. It looks like that's what they've done in the Caribbean.

It is unfortunate that you were inundated by aggressive street vendors. When the hair on the back of your neck stands up, its a smart move to retreat.

Can you show more of the food you eat at each place

Hey there! We totally get it - food is a big part of the travel experience. Honestly, most of the time we just grab a drink since we're only in port for a short while. It can be tricky to squeeze in a full authentic meal experience with our tight schedule. But we’ll try to sneak in more food shots when we can! 🍹

This was a tough one to watch, does this ever dissuade you from travel? Did you notice many kids getting off the ship in this port? 💕

I don’t want to sound rude but why would Royal choose this port ? I can imagine tourism is a big money maker .
