The Downsides Of Living In Dakar

  • I've been based in Dakar,Sengeal for almost a year now, and while I prefer living here to Accra,Ghana, it's not all rosy, as with any city in the world. So you choose what you want to have and what you're willing to give up.
Here is part 2 of my first "I left Accra for Dakar. Here's WHY." There are other things I certainly struggle with here beyond what I mention in the video, but they require more context, so maybe a longer future video.
    ► ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Jessica Sarkodie! I'm a Ghanaian photographer currently based in Dakar, Senegal. I'll be sharing videos on travel, fascinating stories in West Africa, why I've chosen to be based in Dakar(for now), and really anything that I'm moved to create. #photography #videography #documentary

Your style of content creation is a much needed break from the regular repetitive ones often shown. Would love to see more. Especially of the cost of living, not only on Dakar but places like Saly and other cities outside of Dakar. ❤️

What I love is that you show the beauty while telling of the challenges. It encourages the viewer to understand that the experience will not be (or should not be) a heavy list of downsides because there are so many sides to any place. Beautifully done!

I'm currently on a 35 day vacation in dakar. I can't believe this place. It makes.me want to sell all my assets and start over here.... I don't know how I'd do it... maybe start a restaurant or an airbnb... but this place is paradise... I think I met the love of my life here... it hurts knowing I have to leave.... I can't believe this heaven on earth exists..

I lived there for two years. Downsides: Malarial mosquitos and huge, aggressive flies that will swarm on your food if you're outside eating. Taxis, as you said, require negotiation each time you enter one. Few of the taxis are in good condition. If you get one with a seat belt, you're lucky. If you get one with A/C, you must have hired a driver specifically. The languages are French and Wolof. If you don't speak either, talking to locals is a struggle. The slow pace of EVERYTHING will grind your nerves until you get used to it. If you have a car, it has to be washed DAILY due to the sand from the Sahel. Kids begging on the street is both irritating and heart breaking. But parents hand them over to the religious leaders who put them on the street to beg. Lastly, the Toubob pricing even hits you if you're a black American, making an expensive place even more so.

Too many close ups. I had a hard time telling WHERE you were. So the filming felt very claustrophobic. But I appreciate your observations. The frequent protesting is a vestige of France. 🇫🇷 The French protest often - it’s almost a tradition. And as they say… namely in French speaking Africa, all roads lead to Paris. This also could be why they are rather reserved. French people are the same way. They could care less about customer service. They just don’t get the concept the I don’t want to come to your restaurant if you treat me like I’m a bother.
