  • It's the first week of 2022; what better time to share a story of risk and immense change. While this change didn't happen for me at the beginning of the year, it could be helpful to you if you're considering a similar change in your own life (as most people are at the beginning of each year).
    In April 2021, I left my much-loved hometown, Accra, Ghana, for Dakar, Senegal. I share what inspired this move and some of the significant differences between my day-to-day life in Accra vs. Dakar.
    ► ABOUT ME
    Hi! My name is Jessica Sarkodie! I'm a Ghanaian photographer currently based in Dakar, Senegal. I'll be sharing videos on travel, fascinating stories in West Africa, why I've chosen to be based in Dakar(for now), and really anything that I'm moved to create. #photography #videography #documentary

    I just found your channel and subscribed because this choice between Ghana and Senegal is a HUGE dilemma for me. I love Ghana, but there is a unique vibe that pulls me to Dakar, along with the much cleaner streets and beaches. THANKS for making this video. Looking forward to seeing much more from you on this topic!

      @@kennykross3306 - You are correct. The Western region beaches in Ghana are much cleaner and absolutely beautiful, but many of the roads to access them are horrible. With exciting projects like Marine Drive, things will continue to get better, but it will take some time. Even though Labadi has problems after covid, I still love to go there.

    @jessica if you think Dakar is beautiful, which it certainly is, you should try Ziguinchor. By far the most underrated city in Senegal. I was born and raised in Senegal and for decided last year to visit this immaculate green region of Senegal and it was awesome. I just fell In love and tou should give it a shot.
    Keep on trucking.

      Zig is extremely slow,but, much more natural compared to Dakar. If she likes the arts scene and having some sort of nightlife and entertainment Dakar would probably be best. I enjoy visiting family in Zig,but, after a few weeks I need to move about.

What is the name of the beach you were sitting at in Dakar, please? I visited Dakar in December 2021 and returned last week. I truly loved every moment there and the nightlife was most enjoyable. Outside of Dakar is also very, very nice such as Saly, Somone and other places in Mbour, Thies where I visited and will return, inshallah, to stay for 3 months. Casamance is a region I plan to visit on my next trip to Senegal.

      Thank you! I do speak French, and it definitely helps a ton, but I know at least 5 people who live in Dakar and speak little to no French (further proving how diverse it is). Two of them work for themselves online so don't actually need it, but 3 of them have traditional 9-5 jobs and were able to find something that didn't require French. So it's certainly not impossible. There is a huge anglophone community.

      I think Ghana and Senegal share a lot from kingdoms to now . But people see themselves in different places. I am Senegalese born and raised but Dakar is kinda particular in culture and geography and society but I see many Senegaleses still leave in some unstable countries it’s a choice. I hope to visit Accra one day as well . One love ❤️

    • @AbdouAfreecan
      @AbdouAfreecan Před 2 lety +2

      @@kennykross3306 I said they share a lot from kingdom time to now that includes geography , some similarities in culture and features etc because all our western small countries were created from the Berlin conference in 1884/85. The kingdoms like Mali, Songhai Mousso, Ghana(kingdom), Benin (kingdom) etc laid across west Africa occupying several countries at the same time according to their era of reign. We were more centered and most of our coasts were uninhabited . If west Africa were not shattered a lot of us would share the same land.It was well planned by the oppressors to keep weak and under control and I think it’s time for us to mentally break the chains

    • @AbdouAfreecan
      @AbdouAfreecan Před 2 lety +4

      @@kennykross3306 I agree in some of things you said in a closer look . But by the time you mentioned Mali there is a link that you might ignore from some ethnic group in your country. because Senegal always belonged to Mali as well during kingdom but even before independence we separated in 1961.any Senegalese born around 1950’s can be considered Malian. We share couple of languages with Mali.Mali is also linked with Ivory Coast and burkina and Guinea in ethnicity and languages . In older history Senegal is traced as a population that migrated from Eastern Africa. A lot of Senegalese look like south Sudanese tall dark skinned and even kinda slim facial featured and that eastern black population has a lot of originality with Egypt ( old Egypt) called Kemet an Arabic name meaning The black nation . A lot of research had been conducted about it even with the hieroglyphs .And I am part of one oldest ethnicity in Senegal . Basically I am not very lost and I very proud about it. But if we come back in modern history nations are very mixed and we don’t recognize a lot of maliens Guineans Bissau Guineans and Mauritanian in that settled in Senegal because of marriages between ethnicities . In the same way Ghana was historically uninhabited about 3000 to 4000 years ago. I am not trying to justify and link but a lot of our western countries have a link with Mali (in recent history). Islam interred in Senegal in 11th century from Mauritanie and the pular community in Senegal was the first to adopt you will be wrong if you are based on religion because we existed before 11th century. Religion ( The 3 religions) came lately in west Africa and in my own ethnicity which is serrere you see Muslim and Cristian in the same family and even same house because my cousins are Christians but before us serrere we had our ancestral religion before.
