  • Today we're bringing you a video on a method that will help you improve your intonation. It was introduced to me by Alex Hanna, principal bassist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Pittsburgh Double Bass Symposium.

Wayne didn’t play in a section of saxophonists all playing unison lines (or if he did do some big band stuff I’m not aware of, I’m sure he played those lines in tune). He also didn’t play bass. When you’re a solo melody instrument, you can do all kinds of pitch bending stuff and it can be incredibly expressive. When you’re playing a bass line however, you’re defining what the harmony of the whole ensemble sounds like. You’ve gotta be in tune so that the rest of the band sounds in tune. And this is even more important if you’re playing in an orchestra, playing unison lines with seven other bassists.
The point: music isn’t about doing it the “right” or “wrong” way, it’s about understanding what your role is in the ensemble at any given time, and making choices that help the ensemble get the kind of sound you want it to get.

      @@trevorrobertsondoublebass4233 dude got triggered 😆
I can assure you that there are wrong ways haha 😁
I couldn't agree more with what u said and that's exactly what i meant : context is everything
That's why I dont like statements like "a beautiful note is a note in tune"
Also u dont need to be playing a unison in a section to "sound" out of tune 😅
      Peace 🎶

It's easier to justify out of tune notes in the context of all the other in tune ones

Define “in tune” do you mean in tune to the traditional western twelve tine equal temperament? Or something else? Nineteen to equal temperament? Seven tone equal temperament? Some sort of completely different microtonal system?

What do you think an orchestral bassist would be referring to?

The answer is to every one of your questions: yes it has to be in tune. Whatever temperament or system your are playing in.

You know 12 tet isn't the only temperament in Western music?

Ah not so fast whats in tune? nothing more beautiful than a small acapella or quartet who’s ears naturally lead them away from equal temperament to just, tricky though. Needs context of your team & size of it. 3rds! Just, equal, blue they can work all the way from minor 3 to 4th

Although he plays "in tune" it still doesn't sound beautiful because his tone is quite ugly lol
