I wish I could convey to non-bassists how crazy hard it would be to pull this off so musically and smoothly. These guys are terrific.

They had been and they will are also unique. No more Slam no more Major. They were both, one thing with their instruments - flesh, bones and soul - in time with no technology, just their ears that are our first essential and basic instrument.

Yeah… not a bassist but I can imagine. The ability to know so well what you are going to play that you can sing it at the same time as you play it in perfect sync with the same rhythm and pitch is crazy. Great musicians both of them.

Love how Slam is playing and singing in the "upper" register, and Major is doubling in the "lower". Sheer Awesomeness. 🤩

Absolutely Marvellous !. I saw Major Holley at Jimmy Ryan's, in the 1970s, when I was in a Liners band, cruising from New York. Wonderful days !.

Slam Stewart is one of the most under-rated bass players in the history of jazz, simply because for years he played with art tatum , and he was one of the few bass players capable to follow Art tatum's right hand ...

Although classically trained Slam was denied a career in Symphonies because of segregation, legend has it that when Slam played in major city the front tables in the clubs were occupied by Classical String Bass players marveling at Slam Arco(bow)Playing!

Slam sometimes had his moments of complete musical blundering (in which he was said to have ruined some good recordings with Art Tatum) but in these later recordings you can really hear how gentle and nimble he was with the bass and his voice! Major is like his polar opposite in that he's not singing alto, he's singing lower and rougher with a lot of throat vibration and it gives his solos a raspy sound. Two masters and another hundred years and we won't have another two like them!
