  • The MTA, the Port Authority and their law enforcement partners kick off the summer driving season with a campaign to nab people who drive with fake or obstructed license plates. CBS2 political reporter Marcia Kramer says it costs the agencies millions of dollars and officials are determined to go after drivers who break the law to avoid tolls.

      FYI, the bridge has already been paid for - 90% of which comes from the federal government. Maintenance o the bridge, however, is paid for the local governments and users. These municipal fees are charged primarily for upkeep and safety personnel. When people block access to their plates, it reduces the $$ amount available for that maintenance. A source of revenue, yes. But one needed to keep the bridges and roads in good operating condition. These tolls, by the way, are highly regulated by the taxing parties. The money generated does not go into the state or local revenue fund.

    it doesn't " cost" anything to drive over a bridge, stop making it sounds like some type of resource is being consumed. These tunnels and bridges will remain open and standing regardless of anyone using them. These tolls are outrageously expensive and NY is going to add a congestion fee on top of it. MTA/NY wants money because they can't budget their own finances. They get bailed out after bailed out and still fail. It's upsetting because we, motorists and straphangers, have to pay for their shortcomings.

      You're missing the point here. MOST of the people using fake or obstructed plates also carry no liability insurance on their vehicle. Auto insurance companies cannot sell insurance on unregistered vehicles. If you got so badly injured in an accident with an "at fault" uninsured driver that you'd need months or years of expensive care, at your own expense, and you couldn't go after the other driver's insurance because he has none, and he has no assets, you'd quickly understand why the state has a "compelling interest" in enforcing these issues. It's to protect you, and other people who actually carry proper insurance, from economic harm caused by others.

    • @drewb1079
      @drewb1079 Před rokem +1

      @@jamesfarrell7465 i have been in a accident in NYC with an uninsured driver. When you are choosing your own coverage for auto insurance there is a Category called “uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage”. That is exactly why that coverage exists. If you can’t measure or understand the risk of driving a vehicle on the road, then you shouldn’t be driving. In addition, most people carry the state minimum due to the cost of premiums. The state minimum requirements will not cover years of extensive medical care for people who were involved in a serious accident. It’s the responsibility of vehicle owners to understand what their policy offers and how to keep themselves protected in such a devastating event. NYC has plate readers on every single bridge and tunnel crossing in & out of all five boroughs. They can accomplish their mitigation efforts in other enforcement measures without using the excuse to tax motorists.
      The bottom line is tolls were created for expending and maintaining the infrastructure of highways, bridges, and tunnels. Clearly NY is doing otherwise with that money, thus bringing me back to my point, it’s not THEIR MONEY, IT OURS being forcefully extorted.

At this point it’s just a cash grab and not to “pay off the bridge “. Maybe a compromise would be to stop collecting tolls during the Warmer months of the year and collect it during the colder months. Ya know, the months that actually makes sense to maintain the bridge from harsh weather.

      The Turnpike were these gods who meant everything, even more than the health and rights of entry-level employees. Instead of understanding that some employees didn't want to risk their health to come to the office during Covid, NJ EZPass (Conduent) began penalizing and firing low wage call representatives while team leads, supervisors, upper management and call representatives who were favored by management for one reason or another could do what they want. The HR workers, finance workers and quality assurance workers worked from home while Estella the office manager, Bob and Doug the two guys pulling the strings at the top could do whatever they wanted.
