    Just bought an X3. Every day commuting over the gauntlet this week at 3am has been a sheet of ice. It has all season tires and the car is performing flawlessly. I normally drive a 6.7 Cummins every day and bought the X3 for a commuter.

    Got really excited to see X3 on the review and how well it did. Sucks Roman didn't agree on the part 3 of the test. Would have loved to the the bimmer go up on it. I got an 08 X5 and have BFG KO2s on it and it does some amazing things off road for a crossover. Love it.

    Awesome to see how the X3 went up the 2nd obstacle, it had no exageration at all it was very firm keeping a good grip. Cool gold mine Hill mash up

    Guys, I loved the review. I hope you can take the X3 up the course all the way and maybe explain in some detail why this system does so much better than many of the other systems.

    Please take up a Grand Cherokee....... You guys tested a diesel model but due to the excessive snow it really wasn't a fair test due. Would love to see it conquer stage 3..... Love your stuff, keep it coming.

    Really wanted to see that 3rd obstacle! I own a 2004 X3 2.5i with a 6 speed manual. It has street tires and it only does “minor” off-roading and all of our snow and mud duties. She has never gotten stuck and just keeps on trucking through. Only complain is that BMW maintenance. Not as bad as others have put it out to be, but definitely a couple of repairs a year (not too unexpected for a 180k mile vehicle though)

    I moved from a 2016 golf r to a 2016 x3 35i. I got back into camping and even bought a (heavy) fishing kayak. Golf R was way too low (4.8 inches ground clearance), and I was not comfortable going down dirt roads in it at all. I looked at alternatives (4runner, GLC300, F-Pace), and all-in-all the videos of this being able to get to campsites (no rock crawling), with decent performance and good fuel economy for what it is, I'm quite satisfied. 4runner was simply too truck-like for a truck that will only see gravel roads 5=10 times a year, and horrible fuel economy. I will have to find a fun car with a manual (kind of shooting myself in the foot for selling the mgb). 2 friends have x3's, one a 2012 since new, the other a 2015 since new - no reliability issues which was another deciding factor. Thanks for the review!

  • @DEXVD
    @DEXVD Před 7 lety +1

    Would love to see more comparisons like this. Maybe the Cx5, CRV, Highlander, Q5, GLC or XC60 next? I am less interested in BMW due to their reliability issues but great to see my suspicions confirmed that the RAV4 isn't really going to do well in the snowy conditions I live in due to poor AWD and limited ground clearance. Are there any differences that would have led the Lexus NX to perform any better than the RAV4? Do they use the same AWD system?

    @Van-Hammer Před 7 lety +2

    For a crossover, I think the Rav4 needs a bit more ground clearance, although it doesn't look too bad. The X3 looked like it could have gone further up the trail. I was looking forward to the next obstacle. What about taking a Juke or CX-3 next or perhaps the Kia Sportage.

    @2:43 BMW states that Xdrive is 40/60 (F/R) in normal conditions, and can distribute differently on slippery surfaces. So it's always engaged in front side. Overall good video.

  • @edinmujkic6110
    @edinmujkic6110 Před 7 lety +1

    BMW xDrive is rear wheel biased, but distribution is 60/40 during normal driving. It does not completely disengage front axle unless at parking lot. When computer recognize that car is being parked it will disengage front axle. I have 2013 X5 35d and did not do off roading of any kind but did do a lot of deep snow driving since I ski a lot, using snow tires of course, and xDrive is a blast in snow.

    The problem with Goldmine hill is that to put a car through a decent test you run the risk of bending it, unless you are prepared to do that its a bit of a weak test, could you do some tree pruning and make it a little less risky to the paintwork?

    Hello , I am in desperate need help in clearing a doubt I had in my rav4, I thought you could probably know the answer to my question...so to begin I don’t live in the states, so the RAV4 I have is not the same as yours, we get the 2.0L version in my country. So I thought that the difference was only in the engine but a few days ago I ordered a replacement rear view mirror from the USA bc it was cheaper to bring and install than to take it to the dealer but when they installed it I realized that it was much smaller than the other one and now it looks asymmetric, one side with a bigger mirror than the other, so I was wondering two things, is it possible that the American version rav4 has smaller mirrors than the 2.0L ones or did I just get scammed and got an unoriginal toyota piece on Amazon?? If they are smaller I think I’ll just order the left side from the states as well so it doesn’t look bad, if you think I got scammed with a smaller unoriginal mirror I guess I’ll have to spend the extra buck on a dealer mirror 😕 thanks hope you could help (mines is the 2018 model btw, the mirror I bought supposedly fit all models from 2013-2018, but I’m guessing only American versions?)

    I can't understand why you guys have to turn off the traction control. Surely the Rav would have done better with a run up with traction control on as you did with the BMW. I'd also like to see the Grand Vitara again, this time with traction control on. It would just cruse up. You tested the Honda with the traction control on. Why not the other SUVs?

    Lets also be clear that when we talk about BMW's in the Dakar, that we aren't talking about beefed up X3's. They are actually rally raid cars with unique chassis that are completely unrelated to their namesake. A good example would be a NASCAR impala to a for sale impala. They both say impala and Chevy is providing the funding for both but they couldn't be more different. BMW does have good experience in off road adventures though, just not sure if any of that is in the X3.

      ted101975 The RAV4 Hybrid uses a CVT but the regular gasoline 2.5L uses a traditional automatic transmission

    BMW owned Land Rover and had access to all of the four wheel drive experience, expertise, tech and patents it needed to make SUV's. They kept the patents they needed before selling Land Rover off.

    The New RAV4 makes me sad. A Recreational Activity Vehicle [4 wheel drive] it no longer is. The original was so unique and versatile, the 2nd gen was okay. 3rd gen had the v6, a high tow rating and could at least hit a trail or two without embarrassing itself. Anything past gen 3 has been an embarrassment to the original idea. FYI - the "center diff lock" doesn't actually lock a diff, it simply applies more clutch pressure on the center PTO up to a given speed before it gradually releases the pressure on the clutch. In fact, it doesn't even have a center diff to lock. The effect is the same though that at speeds up to 25 mph the clutches will lock the front and rear axles together, releasing and reverting to auto above 25 mph. Gen 1 and 2 actually had a center diff and a mechanical lock that gave you true 4wd anytime it was active (for the manual models at least)

    Simple logic says that rear-biased vehicle would perform better in up-heal battles. Front wheel-biased one's will loose weight and grip as soon as hill would get steeper. Down hill would be pretty much close for both vehicle of all-wheel vehicles, cause down-shift and vehicle electric control will play role. But BMW's reaction to loosing grip, at front wheel, was instantaneous.
