    Of course it’s never a problem until it’s Taylor Swift. Ed sheeran got one and on one made any noise. Her astonishing career inspired people into pursuing music career, bring lights to music across the world. It just makes sense to me that she got honored the degree in “fine art”. Plus, honorary degree cannot used as a normal degree to get a job. It’s just to acknowledge her crafts and her contribution to the music industry.

    Ah yes, the Fine Arts degrees. Been there, studying fine arts, listening to all those lectures. Good times, lot of fun, but on the professional level I can definitely say it's total BS. You can't "learn" fine arts. You can be busy with this stuff and that can be somewhat useful but in the end you either have the talent or you don't--and studying will NOT change that. At all.
    So, weirdly enough, I'd say Taylor actually deserves this. She definitely has the talent, so...
    But, I agree, in STEM fields (or medicine or even most humanitarian disciplines like history or sociology) it makes absolutely no sense. Only if you've already got your degree from another Uni and then you get additional one from a different one. That would be the only exception I can see. All the rest of it is just stupid little influence peddling or outright corruption.

    A little self-deprecation or candor would go a long way. She's polished/guarded enough that there's not a lot of sense of emotional resonance. She doesn't need to catalog her most private regrets, but the problem with tumblr quotes is that they're abstract. If you let your guard down slightly, then you can express the same idea while conveying you're working from personal experience.

    There is nothing wrong with getting an honorary doctorate. It’s just a way to honor people who have made accomplishments that are worthy of something in an educational sense. Taylor is a songwriter who deserves to be seen as the talented writer of Fine Arts as she is. It’s not like the handed her a medical doctorate. It’s in something that she taught herself; writing. Nah I don't think it's cringe. That's one way to look at it and there is a lot of truth in the idea that the universities gain from being associated with a celebrity but at the same time, higher education is not supposed to be about "crying at night at 3am over a paper" it's about gaining greater knowledge, contributing to your field and accomplishing valuable work. From what I see, when a higher institution acknowledges someone with these great achievements it's like them recognizing that to gain these things you don't have to go through their traditional higher education route to become renowned in a field. It elevates the meaningful work done outside the school walls to something as respectable as a typical college student writing papers or going to classes.

    I mean, it was stated by NYU that they gave her a degree based on her contribution to the field of fine arts. It's like when one is given a reward for saving people in some countries. There are those countries where the police/military will give merits or money to those who saved people or contributed on a mission. Or when philanthropists are given rewards. Or even those who are given the nobel piece prize. So I think it's fair that she got it🤷‍♀️ she's been fighting for artists' rights and paving the way for some artists for years now. Even her re-recording is making a contribution to the music industry.

    She got an honorary doctorate in fine arts and she is the biggest singer-songwriter since she debuted and very acclaimed for her age.I don't see the problem,it's very well deserved.And cliping a 25 minute speech while taking out the part where she said that she won't tell college graduates what to do in their careers because her path was very different(singing in coffee shops untill an indie label took her),is very disingenuous.Talking about her personal experiences and trying to give advice is the best any artist can do really.There is no clear cut way to make it like her.That's why you used to see a lot of paris hiltons and the likes getting into music and failing miserably,and with all the financial backing you can get.
    Edit:nobody would remember a boring CEO speech because most come from extreme privilege with so much backing,their only job is not screwing up.Not saying Taylor came from poverty(her dad was upper middle class),but those grads will remember her.

My school, Montana State, gave out an honorary doctorate to a judge on a circuit of appeals (don’t quote me on that). He wrote a lot of case law and was very influential. I mentioned him because he was a bit of an unsung hero and didn’t get a lot of the recognition he deserved. I feel like that is what honorary doctorates should be for.

It could be her delivery, i think she is used to performing on stage, sometimes with narration in between songs thus the dramatic tone she has. But she gives a lot of good advice tho. She knows her experiences are probably not as relatable for most of the graduates there, so she gives life hacks instead. She can't really be specific because everyone lives different lives. I'm glad that all these celebrities are coming out and proving by themselves how the idolisation they receive is undeserved. Actors and Singers have one talent they are good at and admiring them for that particular skill is understandable because they have proved they are adept at that skill, well most of them have, but that doesn't mean that they are great at everything else and are morally just because they can sing a great pop song or put out an awesome movie.
    There are some exceptions but more and more you see these people exhibit their cluelessness and entitlement as they are called upon to do something that is way out of their wheelhouse. Maybe just stick to singing, Taylor?

    • @angelaortega1495
      @angelaortega1495 Před 2 lety +6

      Could we maybe just not use Taylor as an example to generalize all celebrities ? While I know celeb worship is toxic, so is their dehumanization (in terms of their character,emotions and abilities, not marialistic things of course) as many view them as being completely different mentally from the average person. A lot of celebs have had your "normal life" (multiple shitty jobs,went to college, dealt with hardships, and some have experienced poverty or worse circumstances than the average person etc). People don't realize that getting into the entertainment industry whithout connections (not Taylor's case, her father owns a label) is much more risky than more conventional paths and guarantees hardship in some ways ( you hear a lot about actors or singers that have had to live in their car, or engage in very questionable or dangerous activities for a while to sustain themselves before making it. These experiences make for valuable life lessons that are universal). Many celebs are also multifaceted as they are great businesspeople (especially musicians I noticed) or humanitarians on top of their craft. I think this view of most of them being out of touch and clueless in other fields is a bit of stretch. (Many are though). The public sometimes treat celebs like they only exist when they're on camera. As soon as they're out of the frame, they stop existing. There's also this tendency to only focus on their worst qualities and generalize that to all celebs.
      Edit: By on camera, I mean that we don't see them as humans who's entire personality,character and abilities isn't limited to what you see on a screen.

      I'd say actors are the least talented out of the two. Singers - actual respected signers - at least need some legit talent at what they do; actors have agents, publicists, film critics and multiple takes in every scene to make them look much better than they actually are. Add in fashion shoots to make them appear as model versus actual models. Actors are treated as brands (hence why they get several sponsors in beauty and luxury brands). When it comes to singers, people who listen will at least call out auto-tune and mediocre signing. For example no one really respects Brittney Spears as a singer; she's more of an entertainer whereas Christian Aguilera actually has legit singing chops.

      Because that's the truth. Why should us normal people not be critical of celebs? You yourself mentioned the celeb worship yet you imply we should also think about them once they're off camera - and in a positive way. Um, no. We got lives. We got repsonsibilities. We got families. We got hobbies that don't include acknowledging how wonderful and supposedly talented celebs are.

      @@TickleMeElmo55 I think you misunderstood or misinterepreted that statement. But I should have worded it much better, that's my fault. Of course I didn't mean we should think of them when they're not camera (that wouldn't make sense lol) I meant that we only treat them as entertainers and not human beings with emotions and flaws just like everyone else when judge them. The level of scrutiny we subject them to and the standards of moral or behavioral perfection we impose on them is dehumanizing. It's not fair (just because they are successful doesn't warrant that) they don't sign a contract stating that they must be exemplary people in all aspects of life for all of humanity. If people think they are, that's the people's problem. We are much less lenient with them when they have flaws, then we are with non famous people. Yes the public doesn't have to think about them, but that's the thing a lot of people do, but only in negative terms. Their human flaws are often magnified and define their character, while their positive traits or significant contributions are ignored and minimized. Will smith was been more defined by the 'slap" than all the positive things (especially a lot charity work) he has done in the past 30+ years.
