This song is hard for me to hear. My Dad suffered a psychotic breakdown .I feel like I lost the man who raised me with love, humor and compassion. It is a strange thing to inwardly mourn the loss of someone who is still alive. For a long time I have sought out relationships trying to find a surrogate father. I have really struggled the last 10 years and I know if my Dad was still in my life, he would have said, "When you gonna make up your mind? When you gonna love you as much as I do?" Wherever you are, Dad- I love you and thank you for everything you did for me as a child and young adult.

The skates drop from her hands. She runs into the house. A doctor is in the room. He won’t meet her eyes. She runs to her father’s side, grabbing his hand. After a moment his hands curl around hers. I never had a father figure but I remember one of my moms boyfriends gave me a Tori Amos cassette when I was maybe 4 or 5 and this song was the one that I found and played over and over again. Eventually I wore out the cassette and later, grew up. But I always come back to this song every now and then and play it on repeat, just thinking about laying on the floor in my bedroom as a child and pretending to hear it for the first time.
