- A column of Russian ‘turtle tanks’ led an attack on Ukrainian lines in the town of Krasnohorivka. At least five vehicles, all equipped with makeshift armour panels, took part in the assault. One tank that was almost completely covered in armour hit two mines and was disabled. But the other four continued their charge, with three of them making it into the town. Two armoured vehicles unloaded squads of Russian troops to continue the assault on foot while a tank opened fire on the Ukrainians with its main cannon to assist in the assault. On the way out of battle, a second tank was disabled after being hit by some kind of explosive. But the crew survived and climbed into a nearby armoured vehicle to make their escape. Once the smoke of battle had cleared, the Russians drove out to rescue one of the tanks. Though bizarre-looking, these ‘turtle tanks’ are proving effective against Ukrainian drones which Kyiv’s men have resorted to because they are very short of artillery ammunition. Krasnohorivka is at least partially under Russian control after several of these assaults. #russia #ukraine #war

People laughed at this thing when it first appeared, but it turns out to be quite useful. (They're not laughing now).
If the Ukrainians had been the ones to modify the tanks in this way, everyone would say: how ingenious, how creative and so on.

Ukrainian soldiers are actually concern watching these turtle tanks approaching their lines, because FPV drones cannot disable them - so we shouldn't underestimate this makeshift solution against drones. Russians are taking grounds using this adaptation.
It's only took them 500,000 soldiers dead to think of this mess.

Could it be because the Ukrainians withdrew their heavy tanks from the battleline when new technical developments changed the the battlefield conditions to minimize their losses, while the Russians just kept deploying them until their losses reached levels not seen since the second world war. The only reason why they can operate their makeshift tin boxes at the front line is that the Ukrainians have run out of anti-tank weapons and artillery shells, but that window is closing now.

It's a russian drone not a Ukrainian one. Russian drones also try to hit ATGM teams to protect the tanks before the attack. FPV drones are safe because they can be operated for further away and without direct line of sight.
t72 has thick armor on the front. its where most of the armor protection is concentrated. you won't get the back easily.
You'll need much larger drones to launch missiles and they're easier targets for anti-air systems not to mention more expensive.

@@Poultrygeist666 Yeah you can use laser-guided shells in that case, or air to ground laser-guided missiles from a plane or helicopter.
The 2nd option is out, Ukraine has maybe a dozen aircraft left if that, and it hides and uses them very sparingly. Laser-guided munitions of all types are not long-range weapons besides.
The 1st option is possible but it would require artillery in range with laser-guided ammo. Which the Ukraine is also not likely to have much of at all.

These tanks are only effective when Ukraine has an artillery shortage. Ukraine is currently relying on FPV drones to attack vehicles (which is extremely effective), hence why Russia is using these horrific makeshift sheds to wage war. The moment US and EU shells arrive (in the coming days/weeks) these are just giant slow targets for Anti vehicle munitions. Ukraine is going to face the same issue with drones when they launch further counter offensive operations. The whole world is watching right now for effective countermeasures because drones are to vehicles what the machine gun was to horses back in ww1.

It’s literally a normal Tank but with more Ground Sheiled and ground Forces and more Moveable from attacks from Now modern warfare like drones and surveillance.

This is just sad. The "2nd most powerful military in the world"has resorted to this because they are facing a armor shortage and cannot afford to loose tanks and other vehicles as they have previously. So much for a world class military.
If it works it's not sad. The army quickest to adapt to changing war conditions and strategy often comes out victorious.
