  • Lang Lang presents: Bach’s Goldberg Variations - A Personal Introduction from Beijing
    Listen to Goldberg Variations here: DG.lnk.to/Gold...
    Lang Lang will mark the global release of his new album today with a special introduction to Bach’s Goldberg Variations from the historic Temple (东景缘, Dongjingyuan) in Beijing - site of the old imperial printing house and a former Buddhist shrine, meticulously renovated in recent years to preserve its multi-layered history. The pianist will perform extracts from the Goldberg Variations and talk about the intense personal connection he feels to Bach’s music, as well as answering questions from fans.
    “This is a very important dream-come-true moment”, says Lang Lang. The superstar pianist, who waited 20 years before playing Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental composition in public, has finally achieved his goal of recording the Goldberg Variations. The result of two decades of deep study and personal reflection, his vision of Bach’s Aria and 30 Variations is out now on Deutsche Grammophon.

    Very interesting. I am a very diehard Gould fan. There are not many other pianists I can even tolerate playing Bach. Lang is extremely musical, he feels every note and I can feel his emotion in almost every passage. I cannot believe I like this because it is so different from what I am used to. The key is that he really feels this music and it comes across. He is very tender in the slow ones and very clear in the fast ones. I am so glad the fast passages were not covered up by pedal. Yes, Bach was a virtuoso and sometimes his music has to be played that way. He did say he heard Gould's 2nd recording and it inspired him to want to play this. I also like the way he adds ornaments to the repeats, although some I disagree with. In any case, no one has a lock on what tempo Bach should be played at and I am glad there are musicians like Lang who express themselves and don't worry about what critics will say. Bravo maestro!

    After Gould's recording of Goldberg Variations in 1981, every time a new recording by another pianist came out I could hardly continue listening after the second variation! With regards to Lang Lang, prior to his Goldberg Variations release in 2020, I was unable to connect to his musicality. Therefore, with a pre-conceived and probably subjective view of Lang's style, I started listening to this release; and the rest is history! This was not the Lang Lang I knew, he feels the repertoire very deeply, with a lot more rhythmic and ornamental freedom than those of Gould's, much wider dynamic range and super clear articulation creating a whole new world. I guess Lang Lang knew he was up against Gould's 1981 interpretation, so he had to come up with something different yet emotionally powerful, and he delivered. Just as I listened to Gould's 1981 recording for probably hundreds of times, this recording will be part of my regular listening diary for the years to come.

    This ancient Chinese Hall is older than Bach itself. Sound coming from woods made of Hard Rock Maple and British Columbian Spruce integrates gracefully with the ancient woods and texture of this hall. No matter how large or small the grand piano is, it must carry its' tones throughout the air molecules and acoustically project throughout the entire premises of its enclosure. That's the way to gently and consciously hear the instruments, whether its the piano or other stringed instruments. Played passionately are the Goldberg Variations from Master Lang Lang.

    Who cannot be moved by this? The critics (NYT) are harsh, but I don't agree: Lang shows us how timely Bach is, so "now" - and so much a human heritage, particularly when played many hundreds of years later in an ancient temple in China. Lang Lang has really thought about this. I think the new album is a truly masterful recording.

    • @ghoshneh
      @ghoshneh Před 3 lety +6

      Given he is a well established pianist who doesn't need critics now, Lang had two options and he was well equipped to execute either of the options in recording this: 1. To please critics OR 2. To please music lovers, and I believe Lang chose the latter.

    • @ghoshneh

      Talking of critics; when we are kids we dream of becoming something extraordinary, one dreams to become a Doctor to save lives, another dreams to become a Scientist to make vaccine and save lives, another dreams to become a Pianist to spread love and humanity, and another dreams to become a President etc! NO ONE dreams to become a Critic!!!!!

    I think there's something about the grammar of Bach that suits Lang Lang exceptionally well. He's a very intuitive musician-sometimes too much so-and the rigor of these pieces seem to have solidified his musical poise and bearing.
    How many times I've heard listeners faulting him for his "unemotional playing" or "mechanical virtuosity," but that's hogwash: more racism and confirmation bias, than reality. In fact, to my ears his early playing is _too_ indulgent, too emotional, too sentimental, too exuberant. Maturity, along with the weight, responsibility, and pressure of these variations seem to have honed his spirit and "existential" confidence. He's doing less, compensating less, discovering more. Infectious stuff.

      I completely agree with you. Lang-lang shows us Bach as a man with his own weaknesses, passions, internal contradictions, and not as an Apostle who did nothing in life, only glorified God in sounds. This is generally lang lang's signature style, performing any composer, it tells the story of the composer's life and his music, shows for whom and for what the work was written. Lang lang is a very intelligent pianist who knows well the history of the music he performs, and this is always heard in his performance, while other pianists present outdated stereotypes when it was believed that Bach should be performed in such a way that the listener immediately had the desire to fall on his knees and start praying.

    • @ashzhu3085
      @ashzhu3085 Před 4 lety +1

      @@user-yb7ie9nv6l Yeah Bach performed by Lang-lang feels like an old man talking to you - sometimes he laughs and sometimes he cries.
      But I also want to point out that how Bach's keyboard works should be performed have been long discussed. Many other pianists have also explored expressive ways to play these pieces and some of them are renowned for their styles (such as Tatiana's 'The Art of Fugue').

    Our pacific symphony just canceled their entire 2020=2021 season. It was a little emotional, so we must wait for our reunion as well.

    Lang Lang, as the spokesperson for VIP Peilian, You can't do anything for profit. Take the VIP's advertising endorsement fee, and work with the VIP sparring business organization to defraud the parents of their money. Defrauded millions of parents and ran away with billions of dollars. However, Lang Lang deleted everyone's messages with no conscience, and did not stand up to speak for everyone.please STAND OUT for teachers and kids! So many people buy this program because of you!!

    谢谢朗朗!我女儿也弹琴,我希望她第一个曲子就弹这个变奏曲,无论好坏,都应该以它开始。听过很多版本,觉得这个变奏曲很不适合你的演奏风格,你无拘无束,天马行空的浪漫风格和这个循规蹈矩的曲子完全不同。所以演奏起来总觉得无的放矢,乐句之间缺乏有机的联系。即便这样,也不愧为一个与众不同优秀的版本。
