I feel like this type of gross inefficiency is the exact reason why there is such a huge overworking problem in Japan. Tasks that are supposed to be simple and painless are excruciatingly slow and tedious because Japanese companies are still frustratingly dead set on not automating or digitizing any of their processes and are still dependent on archaic methods of doing business. This is hands down the main reason why I abandoned my plans of moving there permanently. I would tear my freaking hair out on a daily basis just knowing that there are much easier and more efficient ways of performing any given task in an office scenario, but would just not be allowed to so, or would not have the basic capability to do it because the company hasn't invested in such simple and cost effective systems. I feel terrible for operations managers over there who recognize this but are powerless to effect any change that would make their lives a hundred times easier.

@@luffyichigo850 Yeah, let's tell him to move to the most racist land on this planet.
When I first moved to Japan in 2010:
- Went to Softbank to get a phone: "Sorry, you need a Japanese bank account to get a Japanese cell phone."
- Went to a Japanese bank: "Sorry, you need a Japanese cell phone to get a Japanese bank account."
I sometimes wonder if that is the "polite way" of saying "we do not want you as a customer".
I know business/front desk workers that make up a complicated process to push annoying customers to the competition.
If you wonder how this is making business: Good question - with some customers you know from experience that they cause a lot of trouble and thus (on average/typically) are not worth the revenue they create.

I mean it's not like there's a 'perfect' country out there, there's always problems in economy, political, etc. But at the end of the day, they never regret being a citizen there, and can be happy with their lives.
In Japan, the staff does the "let me talk to the manager" move.

As a Canadian, I literally have not stepped inside a bank since the pandemic started.
Me checking my April transactions on TD/BMO while watching this
I haven't been to a bank in years
Meanwhile, I never walked into an actual bank (for myself at least) to receive ANYTHING.
That’s what bank apps are for.
I finally started investing my money during the pandemic while not setting foot in a bank for at least 2 years, and even in my shithole country the banks are good enough to let you do literally everything short of opening an account online and the service's pretty decent
I've been with Tangerine for 6 years and they don't even /have/ branches. I think I had to go into the foyer of a Scotia once because I had to use one of their ATMs to do something with my PIN on a new card.
True. That's why phone companies started giving away credit cards and they are better.
So, you pay your credit card bill along with your phone bill?

They never had all this figured out in the first place. It's why economic miracle bubble bursted.
@@Beerbottles123 Yep, despite the technology a lot of Japan is pretty backwards
That's why they peaked in the 90's and are still in stagnation up to now
@@leonguyen896 that is exactly what makes japan so unqiue.
do you want to figure out how UK or US banks are to non-citizens, non-resident?
Banks know that holders of non-permanent work visa are customers that mean a lot of work and that they will typically not become live long customers.
Then there is also secret service, tax and customs, ... that for some or no reason at all can inquiry and/or block accounts, making the bank extra work.
Things I have said about Japanese banks over the years:
- “I’m so happy my bank stays open until 5pm.”
- “I can’t draw any more money out, the ATM closes at 9, and won’t open until 9 in the morning.” (It’s a Saturday, obviously who in their right mind would want extra cash after 9pm on a Saturday night, right?)
- “You opened your account with a signature and not a stamp? Then you have to go back to your home branch in your home city so they can check your signature against the original. My stamp? Oh, they have a copy of that on the computer they compare it against, so they don’t need to see the original.”
- “Okay, so you’re telling me that I can’t deposit or withdraw cash from any of the tellers here, I can =only= do that at a machine with the PIN I’ve forgotten, there is no way I can withdraw money or put money in without that PIN? Got it. I’ll close my account, please… Thank you for giving me my money.” (Slight exaggeration at the end there… but that was an option given to me!)
I know living in Japan isnt as great as a lotta people perceive it to be, but God the banking situation is a nightmare. I guess American banks are better
LOL they seriously have you that option like wtf
@@wampaisen Japan is a great country and I love it here, but there are two mantras that are on their face reasonable:
• “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.”
• “Mistakes can sometimes be forgiven, except where money is involved.”
That are just taken to the extreme across industries in Japan and combine into the worst effect with banks.
But all is not lost, there are a =lot= of banks in Japan (dozens and dozens), and that means a lot of competition, which gives the smaller banks incentives to improve. After changing banks a few times over the years, I now have a bank that is open for at least some services 7 days a week, has ATM access 24 hours a day and has an app that let’s me do all of the day-to-day of the things I want to do. I haven’t tried getting a written statement sent to me like Garnt needed, though, so I can’t speak to that.
@@xTheParadox99 Welcome to Japan: where loopholes are more common than exceptions.

Tbh life in Japan is overrated. Everybody seems to want to come here but man just so you know, it's not less shady than any other countries.
Depends on what you're looking for in Japan. Vacations? Might be the best period of your life.
Want to work in Japan? Depends on your work experience... If you're a fresher who's cleared at least Japanese N3, there's tons of opportunities in IT sector, Automobile, etc (due to declining population, Japanese parliament aims to import at least 500k foreign worker by 2025).
But if you're an experienced worker, there's better options in European countries offering better work-life balance.

@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks It would make quite the bank statement.
IDK what regulations banks have to follow in Japan, but as a person who works for a bank, we have to follow *strict* rules with international accounts. This is why we don't have many of them. Having to do everything in person is pretty standard to avoid any direct or indirect fraud. I'm guessing your account might be labeled as an international account because a visa is mentioned so you are not Japanese citizens. Here in the U.S., international accounts have to be monitored to the upmost degree. Otherwise the bank can be sued or penalized big time for inadvertently allowing fraud or any other illegal activity.
Yeah. Note that it is (sometimes) not even citizenship, but residency. If you live in a foreign country and thus pay taxes in that country, some banks will try to cut your loose.
Even as a citizen, but without residency in the country of the bank, it can become tricky.
I remember the first time I got comissioned for game work from Japan. The Japanese are so slow on their system that the payment took 2 and a half months to process and get to me. It's horrible.
Can't speak for a whole Europe but from my experience, what you are talking about is pretty much the standard I am expecting. I currently live in Czech Republic and it is the same - internet banking,m paying with bank apps...everything is as easy as possible. Hell, you can even use a bank identity to communicate with public service nowadays - basically your bank vouches for your personal info and you give it a permission to provide the info to state institutions and bye bye going to offices to renew your driving license, ID, etc.
why the hell would you do that?
@@MrGloriousBastard no need to visit a lot of state bureaus in person ever, no paper forms. Bank verifies your personal info because they already have it anyway and you give it permission to share the info with state institutions that require authentification. The process is the same, you just need to write your username and password online and the info is sent authomatically, instead of you having to go to the bureau, waiting in line and showing the bureaucrat your ID and filling out forms with the exact same info.
That is actually really good, damn i envied that bureaucracy system

Here in America the apps work great too and I never have those inconveniences.
Yea looking at my bank account from my phone is something I take for granted
Yeah, I apply for credit cards from my bedroom (took me less than 4 minutes) and I sometime get approval in a day or two. I would live on cash if I have to deal with Japanese banks....
Hell I'm living in a 3rd world country and banking apps are okay and usable most of the time. Japan's bank just hit different I guess.
They need to get Dogen on the podcast. Really want to see their opinions about the English system in Japan
meanwhile in the UK: I forgot my PIN, walked into my bank, told them I'd forgotten my PIN, can you send a new pin to my address and can I withdraw 20 quid for my lunch?
They're like "sure, here you go". Didn't even ask for ID...
they didn't ask for at least an ID? That's very dodgy lol

yeah i only been to japan once, but when i went to do some normal stuff that required clerical duties like getting a train pass, exchanging money, withdrawing money i was just so shocked at how outdated the system looked. which is completely the opposite of how i romanticised japan to be; a futuristic populace. but for me, this juxtaposition of antiquated culture and progressive milieu is what gives japan a distinct feel
Yup, I watched that video of Dogen as well. IIRC, the situation was like this: he was at the bank with his kid, he had wait a while and fill out a form. Then for some reason (I think he had to use a pen and made a small typo or checked the wrong box on accident) he had to fill in the exact same document all over again. He refused and the staff (after checking with the manager of course) agreed.
The thing I took away from the video was to "use that foreigner card" in some of those situations, it will really cut out a large part of arbitrary bullshit that isn't necessary.
Japan has a lot of rules regarding etiquette, but foreigners are generally given leeway because the Japanese think you're too stupid to learn the rules to begin with.
Wait, a bank statement? The thing I can get by myself through the bank's website whenever I want?
Goddamn
My dude Garnt spilling straight facts here. Came here after 2015 without a credit-card and holly fuck things were impossible. Cant imagine trying to set up shop in the pre-2010s.
I REALLY hate to ponder this but,
If Japanese banks are like this for the most part, what do you think it's like going to a DMV in Japan?
Yes I'm aware of the fact that In most parts of Japan you don't necessarily need a car or a license unless you're working in a field that absolutely requires it due the country being so pedestrian-friendly; but If banks in Japan operate in this outdated of a manner, I can only imagine the absolute slog-fest that would be any kind of vehicular paperwork.
And this coming from a guy who lives in the DC metro-area of the US, where a minimum wait time at a typical DMV is 45 mins to an Hour.
I think they talked about that in a previous podcast.
@@wchan39 yeah they talked about it in the beginning of episode 21
I have an account with a regional bank here in Japan. Whenever I went to do anything it took hours; I did my signature wrong once, apparently, filled in forms till they were coming out my ears and I remember once they kept me so long that the bank had already closed and they had to take me out through the back. I was so annoyed and sweating because the heating was so high in there. I thought: that is the last time I am ever coming in here. Until my brother sent some money from the UK to my account and I had to go in person to fill out forms and say what the money was for... I never use my account there any more. Nightmare.

I legit lol'd when Connor said paper airplanes because, as someone who has worked in banking, had a coworker who makes paper airplanes and just threw them at the lot of us. Such a great use of resources. I used my sticky notes for origami
As Gigguk said UK banking is brilliant. I opened my bank account fully online and managed everything remotely and I've never had to set foot in a branch - bank statements are just sent on the app, most banks just prefer doing it paperless and when it is getting sent via paper, there's popups to just make it digital (with my bank, anyway). Didn't know it was this painful as most banks here are literally the same - all digital, no branches needed.
joey is having a seizure while gant is complaining
The Guys at SBI: Are u challenging me?
I use Transferwise, now just called Wise, to send money back to the UK. It's a little inconvenient to do if you haven't got your Japanese online banking set up since you'll have to go to the ATM every time. But it's more convenient than trying to get the bank to send money overseas.
Same reason I crossed the idea of living (for 1-2 years) in Japan out of my list. Their renting process is especially the worst, and most things are cash based and we all know the convenience and safety of debit cards and Apple Pay/contactless pay. I’d rather just visit for 2 weeks with friends/family, and get a nice hotel.
Do the banks in Japan still use the Dot matrix printers? Cause the sounds ike the banking system in that country is kind of arcade?
You can tell Connar wants to complain just as much as Gigguk 😂
Here I am, having not even stepped in a physical bank for more than a decade...
The problem is, we don't use bank statement to check money movemnet. In 通帳, all (or at least most of) transaction is recorded. I think when applying a mortgage is realistically only time you need that.
Philippines...banking apps are a godsend. They work well here.
This feels like the Japanese healthcare discussion but in reverse.
even just to open a bank account it takes more than 2 weeks until I get my card, and yeah even from a perspective of a country like Indonesia it takes way too long. Here in Indonesia you open bank account 30 minutes later you get your working card with visa or master card on it
automation removes work hierarchy and japanese people love hierarchy. you cant force a robot to do menial task out of spite lol
Maybe you could have updated the passbook and took a photocopy out of it... It would have been easier..

I hated going to the bank in Japan. 11 years there, and there was no advancement in technology during my entire time there, except with MUFG when they changed the procedure to wire money overseas. They changed from doing it in person, which takes 10 minutes, to doing everything over a video phone system that takes 30 minutes. LESS efficient! And then everything has to be done on paper, multiple forms, etc. Simply withdrawing money from the account from a teller required you to take a number, wait, get called up and they give you a form to fill out, you fill it out, take it back up, they give you another number, you wait, they call you up and give you your receipt. 30 minutes. And then the ATMs! If you want to switch to English, the ATM shouts out the instructions in English, basically saying "Hey everyone, there's a foreigner using the ATM!"

Bank Robber: ...and how long would that take?
Bank employee: a minimum of 3 weeks, one week if you're really lucky.
