Rescuing a flying-fox in a pool enclosure: this is Montpelier

  • Montpelier is an adult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who got trapped in a pool enclosure. It's quite difficult, even impossible, for bats to get out of enclosed or confined places, where they can't climb high enough to be able to fly high enough to clear the boundaries.
The ledges around the pool were quite narrow and where the batty was hanging (in the hedge) was difficult to access from the narrow ledge. I don't like to get wet, and it would be difficult to rescue a bat while floundering in the swimming pool.
The painter laid me a plank over the corner of the pool which provided the access I needed without having to sidle along a ledge or risk falling in.
Sorry folks, happily I didn't fall in.
Montpelier didn't really enjoy being caught, but he was either a sufficiently calm boy, or had hit his head enough to keep him fairly quiet. He flew off into the wall then took a swim in the pool. I love to watch them swim - they're so elegant as they slide across the water surface using an effortless batterfly stroke.
He's doing fine in care. I am hoping he was just inconveniently placed, rather than having damaged more than his pride, and having gathered a few bruises in his attempts to escape.
Day 3 in care: Montpelier is doing well but has grazes on his knuckles which need some time to heal.
The bone is just under the skin and knuckle grazes are relatively serious, requiring special dressings (expensive dressings) to keep the bone covered and moist till healing occurs.
Final update: Montpelier did well in care; he healed and he went into the release aviary, and was released about 7 weeks after coming into care.
YAY, we love a happy release.

      Hi Bigiggy
Are you new to my channel? I adore seeing the whites of their eyes.
      Welcome to Megabattie.
I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first.
I also put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
If you want to find more videos of a specific bat, search in the YT search bar for Megabattie/name of bat.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  Před 2 lety +43

@@nxmong My channel has actually helped a lot of people's fear of bats by gradually showing them the bats in a different light, and letting them look into the baby's eyes and see them for what and who they are - sentient animals with a soul, with mischief in their eyes and love in their hearts.
I'm scared of snakes - I think they're gorgeous looking (some of them), with their amazing patterns; I love to look at pix of the magnificence of pythons, but I really don't feel any affection for them and I am scared of the venomous snakes. I don't want to know more about them or interact with them but I recognise their role in the ecosystem and recognise that if you don't confront or harm them, they won't harm you.
Same with bats - not everyone is going to love the batties; not everyone is going to look into their eyes and fall in love; not everyone is going to want to interact with the bats, and not everyone is going to want to have them in their lives in any way. That's not required; it would just be nice if people would acknowledge their individual sentience and battiness, and left them alone. Hate isn't required (I'm scared of snakes but I don't hate them) - just acknowledging them.
If you keep watching the channel you may get a new appreciation for them and maybe less fear.
      Thank you for your comment.

They all can do it if they land in the water.
The big bats bellydip on the creek or ponds near their colony, and if they miscalculate and end up in the drink, they just swim out.
They don't like being out of their environment, either in the water or on the ground, so they scamper out quickly.

      @Megabattie  Před 7 měsíci +9

Because this is the name for this kind of bat; he's flying-fox (hyphenated) which is a kind of fruit bat.
All flying-foxes are bats, but not all bats are flying-foxes.
These bats have foxy little faces and fly so they were "imaginatively" named flying-foxes.

I've always loved bats. My family have a moderately sized farm with a small bat colony that took up roost in one of the old barns and it's so cozy to sit out and watch them fly around on a moonlit night. I used to be a little afraid of them as a kid, but unless they have rabies they are incredibly unlikely to even approach you.

It's not too different from flying; they swim easily and comfortably, however it is not their environment and they're always stressed in the water.
In the north, the water has a lot of predators. They don't know that swimming pools aren't dangerous for them though.
All they know at this stage is that they're grounded and they can't get height to fly out, which has to be stressful for them

I love flying foxes. They look like winged dogs. I know they are wild animals and should not be approached unless you're a professional. But they are just so cute. I think that's how most of the people get bitten or scratched, out of thoes who do. Thank you for teaching the world about these amazing animals.

Swimming is just a mimic of flying.
The boy smell in late summer is quite distinctive; it's mating season and the boys anoint themselves with their urine and the pheromones in their urine, and the oily pheromones in their chest glands. It's quite *aromatic* and has distinct acrid pong (Aussie for stinky).

They don't like to be in the water but they get their drinking water by skimming the surfaces of ponds, creeks and rivers and then licking the water off their fur.
They don't particularly like being in the water because it's not their environment, though they're very graceful in the water.
In the wild, being in the water means they can't take off unless they get to the bank and then climb a tree. It also means they're subject to predation - crocodiles up north, eels grabbing their feet around our area. Predatory birds (raptors like sea eagles and hawks) who can scoop them off the surface of the water.
