Rescue of a flying-fox hanging on a pool fence: Riki and her twins

  • Riki is an adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was hanging inside a pool enclosure with her feet hooked into the fence fittings.
The member of public could hear and see she had a baby on her.
When I got there, she had twins.
Twins aren't common in rescues. We don't know how common twin births are in the wild. We do occasionally see mums with a baby under each wing in the early part of the season, but they can't fly with growing babies who will weigh up to half their bodyweight by the time the babies are thermoregulating and able to be left in the colony overnight.
Generally the weaker twin drops off leaving mum with a single baby she can manage to raise.
I often wonder if some of the scrawny babies we find on the ground in the absence of a dead or injured mum bat around, are the weaker of twins who have dropped off.
Riki has hit her head - you can see she's got a head tilt. She is unable to care for her babies at this stage, so the babies have been taken from her while she's recovering. She didn't even fight the removal of the babies. She had no milk, and both babies and Riki were quite dehydrated. I think Riki has been on the ground for a couple of days.
The babies, Klingon and Velcro, are male and female. Little Velcro is tiny and about 10 days less developed than Klingon, who is aged 2 weeks from his measurements.
Velcro may have been conceived a week or 2 later than Klingon, and born prematurely when he was born. She may have been from a different father.
We're waiting to see how Riki goes - when she's ready to take her babies back. Sometimes after a head injury the mums don't want their babies back. Riki is in care with a carer who has other females with babies, so she will hopefully keep her milk supply and stay in baby mode while she's recovering.
I don't know when we're going to try to reunite mum and babies. It has to be when Riki is ready.
I don't know if she'll accept them back. If she won't, the babies will be raised by carers.
If she does accept them, the trio will be in care till the babies are independent, sometime in February or March next year.
In care, Riki will be able to raise her babies, because she doesn't have to carry them around while flying, and because there will always be enough food for her to support her growing babies.
    UPDATE 5 days later:
The twins' mum Riki was improving enough that her twins were reunited with her. Sometimes this is a tricky process where the baby may not want mum or the mum may not want her baby back, but Riki just took the twins back and the babies went straight onto her like they'd only been away a few minutes.
    YAY I love happy endings.
    Further update January 2019:
Riki wasn't coping with both babies, so a decision was made to remove Velcro who wasn't doing all that well on mum. Velcro had significant feeding issues and was a difficult baby in care for a few weeks, then she started to grow and thrive. She was renamed Ruby Tuesday by her carer.
Being probably a premature birth, she took a while to catch up with her apparent age. She will be going to creche in the next week.
Klingon was an easy baby and was raised by Riki. He's gone to creche already and will be released in early march with the other creche babies in his group.
Riki remains in care, still with problems from her head injury. She is gradually making incremental improvements.
July 2019 update: I lost track of Riki in the system. I'm not sure if she was released or if she didn't make it. I neglected (deliberately) to follow up on her because at the time everything was dying and I didn't want to know if she was released or not. Bats unable to be released are euthanased. Riki wasn't able to be released at the same time as her babies because she wasn't well enough, but I don't know if she actually improved or not.
Sorry I can't give you a definite ending, but I don't have that info and I'm not going to ask.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
    tolgabathospital.org/donate/
Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.

Not all are capable of being fearless to wild animals but most people have a talent or gift. We don’t need all people to be veterinarians. Many people love animals but have fear of u known animals but that person might be a nurse, fire fighter, policeman, paramedic, doctor, dentist, priest, work food banks, work for assisted living, nursing homes and many other caring jobs.

Christine Lee there are also various species of flies and their larvae...some, like these ones hatch out under the skin of a living animal. Each species of fly has its preferred incubator/host. It might just expand their survival chances to be on a living creature, since scavengers and carrion eaters don’t mind eating maggots along with the dead flesh, while they generally leave a healthy animal alone. 🖤🇨🇦

@@octoknight1849 Hi Octo - all flying-foxes are bats but not all bats are flying-foxes.
Think of it like this - bat is an umbrella term for all kinds of bats and flying-foxes are a specific kind of bat - a kind of fruit bat. If in doubt just call them bats and that's a correct term - but specifically the kind of bat in the video is a Grey-Headed Flying-Fox. They can also be known as a flying-fox, and as a fruit bat. But not all fruit bats are like this bat in the video. I'm not sure if this answer helps or confuses further.

My dad told me about a time he had an encounter with a bat in college. It was late at night and he was in bed studying, and he hears a scratching. He looks to the window and sees a bat stuck between the screen and the glass. He doesn’t think much of it at first, but the bat gets free and flies onto the bed. My dad screams and jumps out, terrified. He then tosses a pillow onto the bat to trap it and tries to figure out what to do.
So he goes to the kitchen and gets a newspaper and a pot, then goes back to see that the bat is almost free. So he quickly takes off the pillow, covers the bat with the pot, and shuffles the newspaper under it. Then he carries it to the window and lets it fly free. When all is said and done, he realizes he wasn’t the only one who was terrified. The bat was so scared that it had peed on the bed.

One got in my kids bedroom once. My family has always rescued and taken in strays. We have tried to help so many injured. Some made it. I caught the little bat in a kitchen strainer and made sure he was ok. He felt like velvet. My kids petted him. We said a prayer for him, named him Boris, and set him out into the night. ♥️. For people who for some reason don’t read the description
    DATE 5 days later:
    March 2019 update:
    The twins have been released.
Riki remains in care making slow improvements.
Sorry I can't give you a definite ending, but I don't have that info and I'm not going to ask

    • @Megabattie

Babies are given pacifiers/dummies/binkies to help them feel more secure. In the wild, baby would be on mum’s nipple 24/7 for the first month, occasionally letting go to change sides or to have a stretch and stickybeak. A baby holds onto its mum’s nipple with tiny sharp backwards curving teeth, and knows by holding on, it can’t fall. I’m reliably informed that mum’s nipples have very few nerve endings which I feel is a sensible evolutionary blessing. A baby who has a pacifier firmly clenched in its teeth, is less grabby, less stressed, and much more relaxed and secure. Sometimes a baby, with the pacifier firmly clenched in their teeth for security, will just let go with their feet, with and be very surprised when they fall. For this reason when we put the babies on an airer or hang them somewhere, we make sure there is a sling or something to catch them if they let go. In the wild, mum’s nipple is attached to mum.

Maggots serve a role in nature of cleaning up carrion and feces that otherwise would contaminate the environment. Nature isn't kind, and without human assistance the mother bat and her babies would have died, so the flies were getting a head start for their own young by laying eggs on the dying bats.

Science Compliance The main illness blowflies might be likely to cause is myiasis (this looked like the type of fly’s hatched eggs to me). Myiasis is an infestation of blowfly larvae. The mothers often lay their eggs in an un-injured animal, and all you see until they eat their way through to being an adult, and then fly away looks like a large boil under the skin. I DO think the disgust is instinctive in humans, most likely because opportunistic bacteria can invade after the flies are gone...leaving an open wound.🖤🇨🇦

      Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  Před 4 měsíci +1

LOL, the wings are the most amazing part of the whole.
The mumbat raises the babies, the absent parent (father) has the fun, makes the babies, then leaves the girl "barefoot and pregnant" (so to speak) to carry, fly with, find enough calories to grow the babies, fly with the babies in utero whilst growing them, then feed and carry them around after birth until they're too heavy to fly with, then find enough food to nourish themselves and make enough milk for the growing baby they need to feed back at the camp.
The boys do boy things until it's time to shine up their balls again and make more babies.
The only parent is the Mumbat; the boys aren't parents because they don't parent; they're just the sperm donor.

      @Megabattie  Před 2 lety +2

@@littlebrookreader949 I consider baby season to be the beginning of the batty year (or the end if you need a reward for your hard work). Babies are the icing on the cake of the batty year when you can raise the little lost orphans and love them and watch them grow and thrive. Baby season has just started with the first 2 babies coming into care in Sydney.
The bat year consists of baby season (Oct-Dec, but with occasional early and late babies); Netting season where the bats get stuck in fruit tree netting with disastrous consequences (January to April); juvie and concussion season when the juvies start to get their wings and fly free and independently and keep smacking into things all over town (February till July); Concussion season when there is little food around and the bats are starving so they're taking greater risks (April through to September); Birdstrike season where the girls are heavily pregnant and get themselves into all sorts of trouble and end up hanging in a tree out of the colony, and getting attacked by birds (September and early October usually), and we start baby season all over again.
I don't know how many FFs I've rescued - probably around 1500-2000. I have only kept personal records since 2015. I rescue around 300-350 a year depending on how busy winter is. I didn't do so much at the beginning but since I got my car I do a lot more rescues because I can take equipment with me instead of trying to rescue with what I have on the back of a scooter.
