Hey friends, this week I wanted to share my thoughts on Beyonce's album Cowboy Carter. Not so much an album review but the history behind, and some of the black contributions to country music. Also how Beyonce is shedding light on other contemporary black artists that have been in the genre like Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts. A lot of people didn't know the history of country and bluegrass including me and I know there is so much more history than I could ever cover in one video.
For instance I never knew that some of the most prominent early country music stars were taught songs and instruments by black artists. Black artists whose works would never be recorded because they were not only segregated but not seen as marketable. I think history has beautiful and terrifying cycles and I think that it's pretty cool that the Carter Family who as a group were seen as a traditional American folk music group, and whose music had a profound influence on bluegrass, country, Southern Gospel, pop and rock music, as well as on the U.S. folk revival of the 1960s, were all taught music by a black artist named Leslie Riddle who we could never give enough credit to.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoy please share with someone who could use a laugh and most of all thanks for being my friends.

In defence of white spirituals….the right amount of oppression will do it. I mean there’s a reason traditional Irish/Scottish/welsh songs hit right in the soul

They are the other half of that makes country music so good
@@moneypro85 Country music originated in the deep south as black hill billy music. We invented the banjo and this is noted by all American music historians. Besides when the Rolling Stones and other rock band pay tribute it's always given to the American Negros of the Deep South.
One of my favorite bands is called Afro-Celt Sound System. It has modern African and modern Celtic sounds melted together with modern technology. They described how interesting it was for them to get together and find out how much they had in common.
@fizzles There is not such thing as "white spiritual music". It is only corrupted through it.

Being able to watch this man hone and mature in his craft has truly been an honor. Easily one of my top 5 comedians.
I know right. I first saw him from the KKK BBQ shtick and he was already amazing then and now watching him develop to the point where he he's just riffing on current events and is killing it makes me appreciate just how deep his bag is now.
@@keneola Yes indeed! Couldn't have said it better.
"Wait. ARE THOSE KLAN RIBS?" 😆

That long, winding setup for the “small town girl” payoff was fantastic.
Man - you have to be one of the hardest working comedians out there. You’re really good at putting a bit together on topical shit and you effortlessly interweave really insightful perspective. And it lands. That audience may not even realize how much talent they’re witnessing. It’s hard to write a good joke, let alone have it be about today’s headline.
This.
Best and most on point comment.
If you know, you know.
It's easy and cheap to talk about sex, be profane and get folks to giggle like 12-year-olds.
None of that here. And his sets are ever evolving, addressing world facts; always insightful; *and* enlightening... while being hilarious.
Agree with both comments. The knuckle scraping that make up most of these big comedians who just seem to complain and tell made up generic stories. Josh is just outstanding he’s so incredibly smart, can set up a joke, can mix serious and comedic topics and social commentary and is relatable. So many comedians tour for 3 years on the same material and yet Josh posts fresh routines constantly! This man works! I hope he becomes a household name and he seems to have the common sense to not become an egomaniac and live a good life. I’m so excited to watch him grow.

I've been saying that about jail/incarceration yes!! weed in particular reveals how screwed up it is. there are 40,000 people locked up for non violent cannabis offenses even as it's become widely legal and a huge industry. the fact that they aren't freed when the law changes is insane.
ikr that pisses me off
The REAL problem? States? Tax it, sell through their highly taxed “small owner” biz- but you have the slightest infraction? Miscommunication? 💯 You will be in front of a FEDRAL judge and…conveniently still 💯💯💯 illegal to the Fed. So what someone THOUGHT they purchased legally, with about 75% tax on the dollar? Is still hardcore offense. Illinois went back, dropped old charges? But…tbh? They still putting anyone they can make $ on in handcuffs. System is so 🤢🤮 I just cant. I dont even partake?! But don’t trick the ppl that do. That’s their therapy, pain management, trauma coping mechanism~ there are reasons….
Don't forget to mention, how Biden was letting them iut where they are legal.
Canada was one of the first countries to decriminalize weed, yet before that the sentencing for "possession with intent to distribute" was the only crime in the country that had the same sentencing length as attempted murder. A friend of mine had been sentenced to 19 years for being a dealer and when he got released it was legal.
Eh they broke the law though so it's fine

When you can sit down as a comedian and still be rocking the crowd you are reaching a level that not a lot of them do. Your content has to be super strong to do that. 🎤 😆
Congratulations, Queen Beyonce!!! As an independent thinker, I am feeling all her music and Black history lessons. The thing sbout creativity - it's not meant to be perfect. The Renaisssance concert and movie were awesome! Never danced and sung during an entire movie. The experiences were truly innovative. Best entertainment for my money. She's still a creative powerhouse. Doesn't matter what genre of music she feels like exploring, I am here for it all. 😊
Dude, Josh is on another level! I could listen to his standup for hours 😂
Here's the thing, Beyonce is from Texas, so it totally makes sense she would want to experiment in the genre.
Don't STOP BELIEVING!!! HOLD ON TO THAT FEELING!!!
The soup fork guy killed me at the end 😅 Because now that I think about it, I used to work with someone who gave me unhinged vibes. They attacked their food with a knife every time. Even for some things that did not require a knife at all.
i suspect the person uses the tines on the two forks like a little dam... to hold back everything while he slurps... he was thinking "that guy looking at me is into my fork thing... next time he wants broth i bet he tries it"

Everybody freakin' over Beyoncé doing country music and saying how revolutionary it is or they're against it or whatever, and I'm just over here like, "So we're just gonna pretend Tracy Chapman's Fast Car isn't a thing and far better than Beyoncé's country songs (not that I'm saying they're bad or anything), right after she finally got a CMA for it?!" 🤷
Or Charlie pride a singer named June something with locs singing butch Holla tines of the Appalachia
I mean, didn't Lil Nas X just go country a lil bit a few years ago and blow up? Seems like Beyonce noticed that
@sinepilot Old Town Rd, good song. Yeah, I was thinking she noticed Tracy's CMA as well, which came after Old Town Rd, but who knows what inspired her to do it...
@ZombieWilfred Do you think she threw a whole 25 song album together in a couple months? You really think she JUST decided to do a country album? Beyonce was born and raised in Houston, she's headlined rodeos. She's not new to this, she's true to this. The fact that YOU just found out about her country roots is irrelevant.
@annetterose9581 I literally just said I don't know what inspired her to do it. I couldn't have told you how many songs there was or even that it was more than a single. I've literally only heard the one country song they play on the radiov all the time lately, so how would I have any idea how long it would take? All I'm saying is that it's not revolutionary just because "Queen B" did it... 🤷
Nice way to drop that knowledge❤

Charlie Pryde made Country music in the 70's and 80"s. Darius Rucker from Hootie and the Blowfish has been making Country music since the late 90's. Thanks for talking about this interesting subject. I've been relooking into folk music and was surprised by so many cool artists not talked about.
Example:
- Rihannon Giddens in my opinion a musical historical storyteller. On the banjo and great voice
- Sunny war on the guitar. Another great singer with a deep soulful voice
- Elizabeth Cotton a stable within the folk musical scene. Amazing finger picking skillz
Music has the ability to showcase history not talked about. Definitely check out those artists.
Love your stuff Josh! Also regarding the white spiritual hymn, I don't know if this counts, but I'm from Cyprus and my people were enslaved and oppressed up until 1955 when the British forces left the island. We have many spirituals that we were taught in school. Like (translating from Greek) "My Bright Moon", which taught young kids how to evade the oppressors as they walked during the night to secretly go to school. There's also nursery rhymes that use metaphors and allegories to secretly communicate with other Cypriots without their masters knowing. It's very similar to Wade in the Water and other spirituals like that. Music and stories are so powerful because when they come from the soul they can uplift and liberate.
I would say it counts in an overall but here in America we don't hear about it. We do always hear about black slave hymns. That is the space this is focusing on. That is a beautifully sad song by the way. It really shows how oppression really does something to people regardless of color. Luckily science has proven it as well. Now if we could just find a way to stop oppression of this type world wide we would be much better off.
You were not bred and used as capital. And so much else was/is different.

A ton of instruments have African origins...but the fiddle wasn't one of them. The instruments that led to the fiddle started in Mesopotamia, then moved to the Byzantine empire, then become widespread throughout Europe as part of large orchestras in the form of the viola. Renaissance music has a ton of stuff written for the viola for instance. The fiddle has essentially been in Europe for roughly 1700 years.
