I noticed several comments mentioning my brief use of the acronym VSD. I would like to clearify I didn't invent this term and took it from the existing Steam Deck community (YT videos, forums, etc), it is a commonly known and used term, however since several viewers don't enjoy the 3 letter acronym occasionally being used I will be omiting it from future Deck videos and just calling it other stuff. Like "the deck" or the "gabe boy" or "the steamer"

Honestly speaking this was the first time I encountered acronym VSD, and I was really very near the end of the video when I finally put two and two together and realized it what it mostly likely was. Before that I thought it was some kind of more technical acronym that I just hadn't heard of before (such as Visual Settings Decompiler or whatever), and during the video I was wondering about "so when is this VSD thing coming?", and when the video was about to end I suddenly realized "Oh, maybe it actually means Valve's Steam Deck". One reason why it was probably confusing me so much was because the title of the video already mentions Steam Deck so I think it made me assume that acronym VSD must have been something completely different.

I highly recommend capping to 40 fps, for most games and on the small screen it's still very playable (huge difference from 30 fps) while reducing power draw to around 10-15w, which is amazing for battery life

I just want you to know you're the first person I've ever heard call the Deck the "vsd"
The older fan curve was louder but it did a better job at cooling.
The new fan curve is more quiet due to the large number of complaints on hearing it so it's been modified to do it's best to be quiet while still keeping the deck cool.
Can find the “display scaling” option at 3:34 does anyone know does this option become available when its docked with a monitor or tv ? Thank you
4:58, 5:23. They are not "hot swappable." Hot swappable means they can be swapped while the system is "hot," as in on and running. You most certainly do not want to do that, as you have to disassemble the device to even get to a position where you can replace them. In fact the term "swappable" is not even accurate. Swappable means the part has been designed to be "swapped," easily changed out without invasive efforts, if you have to take the system apart to get to the part, it's not swappable. They are however "replaceable" which means they have been designed to be replaced, that is, they are discrete components which can be removed and replaced without advanced skills (such as soldering).

Currently using the old fan speed...
It would be curious to compare the two and see which yields better temperatures or a faster response to thermal throttling.
It's probably already fixed or will be soon if that was an issue. They are quick to keep updates going for a new system.

Good Vid, but like others said, if you want to preserve the life of your device, do NOT enable the updated Fan Curve. It will melt your chip over time. These modern CPU/GPUs get HOT. and if they don't have sufficient cooling... shit goes bad. Heat is the number one killer of Processors. Don't let the "quiet factor" fool you. if you want to take care of your shit. let the fan do it's thing. EDIT: in case some are confused, the updated fan curve simply lowers the fan speeds to make the device quieter. And while this still leaves the chip "within temp spec" it also lets it heat up significantly more than with the original fan curve. In my testing I was reaching around 80-90C with the updated fan curve. and with the original curve the fan was cooling much more efficiently at around 60-70C. But hey, don't shoot the messenger. If you want to abuse your Deck go right ahead. Just a heads up..
I think that now I have turned it off the fan settings are still different to what they were before. Have you noticed this? Now they do nothing then suddenly blast at full then suddenly stop and go to idle. Before this update it was a smooth curve. I'm sure I'm not imagining it. This was the stupidest update I've seen yet.
@@Bolsty7 Hmm really? That's weird, what you describe is exactly what was happening with mine (with that updated fan curve ON) until I disabled it. Now the fan kicks in consistently in most games and stays on for the most part, I mean depending on the game obviously. Like last night I was playing Flatout 4 Total Insanity, and it was graphically demanding enough that the fan was just running the whole time at what seemed like 70-100%. But yeah like you say when I tried that updated fan curve it would get hot as balls and then suddenly the fan would kick on at 100% for like 20 seconds and just shut off again. Rinse, repeat lol yeah pretty stupid.. But yeah I haven't really been able to tell if even the original curve is any different than before at this point. Seems fine to me. And I have everything updated. Oh and I just enabled Beta updates too so not sure if that's a factor or not.
@@Eclipsed_Phoenix Maybe they fixed it in Beta. Thanks for your input. For me with it on, the fans never got strong even when really hot and you'd turn the setting off and the fans would immediately blast at full because it flipping needed to be cooled but yeah not they just go from 0 to 70-100 without anything in between. It doesnt really matter as it still kicks in and keeps it cool but it was definitely more subtle and responsive before this update.
These settings dont show up in my device, only the battery percentage in the menu. Do you know why this is?

I would highly recommend leaving the new "Updated Fan Control" setting *OFF* as what it is trying to do is make the steam deck quieter by attempting to more aggressively slow the fan until absolutely needed which in my opinion is not worth the trade off. I'll take the little tiny fan noise and slightly better cooling and piece of mind knowing that I'm trying to keep my deck as cool as possible, not as quiet as possible.

@@igordelija9185 It's not fine, the deck will overheat and crash when running some games and possibly permanently damage your device but sure it's fine cos someone else said so.
@@igordelija9185 That's great and all, but factually the device runs hotter with this new fan curve as its aimed at making the fan less audible with the added bonus of a negligible increase in battery run time. The cooler the device runs the better, there is no debating that.

Updated fan profile runs much hotter. It's basically quite mode. I'm not trying to see 95c Temps anymore. Changed it first day
I heard the opposite with the new fan control. The only good thing about keeping it on is that it’s quieter but it’ll run the deck hotter. So turn it off if you want a cooler deck

24hour clock is not especially military. Many countrys use that format ;) Only the USA needs special formats for all the things (like lenght, clocks, etc.)

Will run alil hotter but it will not over heat I would recommend turning off the updated fan profile after doing this
Hi, I'm interested in this but as a noob I don't think I should change my bios cos of a random YT comment. Does this change the deck in any other ways? It must make something else slower right? I already dont turn the fan settings on because my deck gets very hot with it on so I'm aware of that but can you give a little more info about what changing it from 1 - 4 does and what suffers as a result? Thanks.
I only use the Performance Overlay during the first game session after a new install when optimizing settings.
The Updated Fan Curve lowers the fan speed to lower fan noise. Deselecting it will make the fan louder, but will absolutely keep your Deck cooler. I recommend everyone try both settings and pick their poison.
after installing ssd IN MY 64gb DECK it was basically necessary to go back to old fan curve as the drive (Dell/ Kioxia low power draw) made the fan go periodically full blast - off - full blast- off in the new setting
in old the fan runs constantly but barely audible and keeps everything cool instead of cooking the SSD then blasting it with air for few seconds just to return to cooking it again with zero cooling.
‘VSD’ and ‘Dibbly dots’ yeah turned off the video at that point lol….

So far, my deck has been fun but it's no replacement for my pc.

Stopped watching when you gave no information about the new fan settings apart from: "It's new, and internet doesn't lie". Don't you think you should do some research and experiments before you rush to go make a video? With the new setting on your fans won't spin as much and your deck might get extremely hot. When you turn this setting off and your deck is hot, the fans will immediately blast full force to start cooling down your melting deck. I really think this setting should come with some kind of warning and you aren't helping.
I actually recommend not touching this setting at all as until you turn it on it seems to stay how it was before the update - you know how fans work - gradually getting stronger and stronger as needed then slowing down gradually. These new settings are: ON: Your SD will melt if you play anything other than a 2D game. Or OFF: Fans won't do anything until suddenly kicking in and blasting non stop for 5 minutes. Worst update IMO.
