I think the one piece live action was really amazing and did a lot of things actually better than the manga counterpart (the Kuro arc, giving Coby more plot relevance, toning down Sanji’s hornyness, ext) but Luffy listening to Nami’s backstory was real bad and really taints that aspect of the arc. Luffy not knowing her backstory is part of what made that moment so special.

@cbmatty9262 As someone who primarily saw the live action version, I kinda assumed that he basically knew her background long before she EVER told him (Also admittedly I'm not actually remembering WHEN exactly she told him). Or, not that he guessed the exact details, but that he knew she was too good of a person to be working with the Arlong crew without some personal reason to do so, and that she would need his help more than ever if she's going back into that life.
Also, I think that one aspect of this scene in the live action version makes up for this flaw... I love how he says it 3 times. First, he says it quietly to reassure Nami. Then a second time, directly facing the camera and where no one else can hear him, as though he's hyping himself up and telling the audience directly. And THEN he shouts it to the heavens, a challenge to the entire world that he would do everything in his power to help his dear friend.

It's because it's (one of) Luffy's defining moment.
Luffy flights for his friend, and doesn't care about anything else.
Even if they reject him, betray him, or he just met them two minutes ago.
Seeing him dismantles carefully prepared plans (sometimes started long before he was even born), just because you hurt his friends is one of the greatest thing in One Piece. He isn't an idealist, or a hero. He's a pirate.

In the movie Strong World, there is also a scene where the entire crew is marching to go and get Nami back, except they are super decked out with guns and bazookas just for style. I started watching one piece when I was at the most difficult point in my life. Everything was falling apart and I needed some escape. I figured "I like anime, and this one is over 950 episodes. I need some mindless long-running shonen." As I watched and saw Chouchou protecting his owner's home, Usopp lying as a a coping mechanism for his mother's death, Zoro grieving Kuina, his emotional fight with Mihawk, and Sanji/Zeff's backstory I realized that this story wasn't what I was expecting at all. I didn't cry because despite everything goin on in my life I have a lot of trouble being vulnerable. But then I saw this scene and was overcome by emotion. I sobbed and let out everything that I was holding in and let down the walls I put up. When I felt so alone and scared and angry this scene gave me hope that some goof with a heart of gold would be there for me. Two years later and I found that goof and she's been a massive part of my life ever since.

Luffy is deep down a simple character, but a very clearly and, in my opinion, brilliantly written one. He is essentially a paragon, he has simple but clear priorities. He is setting the people he cares about above everything else, and thats a good enough reason for him to go through hell for them.

I really like the Japanese word Luffy uses here. "当たり前だ!” "当たり前" is an adjective that means obvious, usual, common, and natural. So he's literally saying "it's obvious (that I'll help you)". But the added nuance of common or natural make it a stronger affirmation. Even in English the implication is crystal clear, but in Japanese it's directly stated. He isn't just saying HE would do this. He's saying that this is what being a crew is to him. Standing up to any foe, for any reason, no matter how dangerous, to save your nakama IS his normal. Anything else would be absurd.

The act of giving her his hat is so goddamn powerful in this scene. He's more or less put it out that it's the most important thing in the world to him, and he knows she knows it. Giving it to her for safekeeping is like telling her she doesn't need to fight anymore and that he'll trust her to the ends of the earth without saying a single word. I don’t know if it’s in the manga, but there’s one scene in the anime. That was a very interesting moment in the fight between Luffy and Arlong:
The fight is obviously reaching its end to the point to where they’re both be slammed through the building of Arlong park itself.
And they come across Nami’s room.
Luffy looks around at the small featureless stone room. The only thing of note in it is a kid size table covered in maps.
And Luffy, despite all of goofy antics realizes instantly what this room is.
It is in this place where he raises his leg up in the air as far as he can, and slams his foot down on Arlong’s face bringing the whole building down on top of him for good measure.
Sometimes the main character doesn’t need to be told a persons backstory, They’re just able to tell.

One of Luffys great, underappreciated strengths as a character (that Oda does a good job of subtly portraying) is his emotional intelligence and awareness.
He reads people and understands their hearts. He did it with Koby, with Nami, with Sanji, with Robin, with Momonosuke, with so many others. He may not be tactical or booksmart, but he understands people's hearts better than anyone in the series.
One of my favorites of these is with Conis in Skypea. "Ever since we came to town, you've been shaking. Why?" He is so fast to pick up on people's hearts, and that makes him a wonderful character and worthy of being captain.

I can see people arguing the panel of everyone ready to roll up to arlong park. But I argue, as good as the composition of it is in the manga, it's the anime where that moment is most impacrful. (Despite the actual walk to arlong park being functionally filler, which also proves not all filler is a bad thing)
But the scene, with nami, arm bloody, asking for help, is the scene that made me go from liking one piece to loving it. I still remember getting random issues of shonen jump when I was a kid, and, despite lacking some context from missing previous issues, felt this moment. And when luffy put his treasure on nami's head, I knew nothing was going to stop him from making her smile again. Because that's what luffy does. He returns joy to people who need it.

I myself find it hard to get into new shows or to communicate what I like about them, and I think One Piece's beginning dragging on a little in places is no secret. And "watch until blank, then it gets better" also is far from motivating to pick up something new. But an easily understandable analysis of composition, narrative importance and impact on the audience of the highlights of chapters is an amazing and not very time consuming (for the viewer that is) way of explaining what it is about funny pirate show that makes it as impossibly good as it is. Even if I show this to friends and they still don't feel like One Piece is for them, atleast your analysis gave them a fair idea of what it is and what it conveys, and I'm incredibly thankful for that!

I also love how the Sanji, Zoro and Usopp jsut follow Luffy. No questions asked, no hesitation. Captain says we're going, so we're going. These people know each other for like a week.

yeah, I was one of the people that fell in love with the show with this scene. It was just so surprising. I only watched a like 6 or so animes before One Piece, but I never this intense of feelings for a character before. It confused me, but it was just amazing how one show could do this to me. This one scene changed how I looked at shows and how writing the quality of a show. I think One Piece is going to always be my favorite show from now on

to me the two best parts of the entire manga are this bit of the chapter with Nami finally asking for help after going through so much and not wanting to drag others into it, and when Robin says "I want to live!" these are the only two parts of the manga that i have teared up at so far (currently in Wano) and they will stick with me for a long time

The more i watch your shorts and videos about one piece the more im tempted to read it myself. It just seems like such a good rollercoaster.
I never expected a character like belle mere and seeing her and seeing these shorts made me immediately understand why one piece is so popular, expecially among minorities like queer and neurodivergent folk (and so many others)
It feels like a manga about love and overcoming adversity so you can continue to love in a sense.....granted this is just an outsider looking in. Cant deny im curious more

I watched the anime of One Piece as a child. And oh boi did I cry at this part and because of Nami's story. I was like Nami as a kid (well not that I had to make a deal with a fish man lol) but I was all alone and had the feeling that I had to save those around and that no one will ever help. I really felt Nami as a little boy and her desperation, but also her hope when her friends came to save her and help her. It made me hopeful, that one day I have friends like this.
Fast forward to my 26 year old self and: I have friends who helped me up, wenn I had my Nami moment. Not that this is because of her. However, she and Luffy made me believe that it could. I love this scene and arc so much and Nami so mich more for it.

You are very right with this!
I think the reason why everybody remembers the Walk to Arlong Park is a) the pure catharsis of FINALY getting Arlong for everything hi has done, for everything he has done to Nami. The pure hype of justified anger getting released together with Namis pain and anguish.
and b) the music is fittingly badass!

I've tried to get into one piece so many times. I usually stop at the sky ocean part (I forget the exavlct name) and eventually try again. Why is that? The Arlong Park arc. It's so well written, and the part with Nami asking for help and so broken and unsure what else to do breaks me.
It is truly a beautifully written character moment by Oda or any author. I'm sure I'll give it another shot, and I'm sure I'll drop it again. I also know that when I get to the Arlong Park arc, I will cry again and love it the whole time.

  • @johnlienhart2717
    @johnlienhart2717 Před 3 měsíci

I think the second best panel in this chapter is the second from the last, where Luffy asks "Which one is Arlong." It reinforces how Luffy is willing to fight for his loved ones with so little information, not even knowing the face of the person causing the pain. And the idea of crashing into someone's castle not even knowing your enemy is so ridiculous that you can't help but laugh, yet so determined and admirable that doesn't undermine the moment, especially with the background of the chapter
