You might want to think about making it a legal sanctuary. There is a co-op farm near me that is on protected land. It is owned privately but by law no owner can ever develop or build on the land. Not sure what that is actually called legally.

I love your approach to this subject! A lot of people jump to conclusions when they hear that something is bad, and assume that every thing connected to it is bad! I’ve been seeing all the hate on sphagnum moss and I was totally confused because I knew they were talking about peat! You were the reason I started using sphagnum moss and I have loved it as a substrate. I am absolutely floored over the fact that you can revive it. So excited for your next video!
Peat moss is still the most commonly used potting soil where I live, but it is being phased out due to ecological concerns. But tbh, it was used long before the dangers of using it were known - such as bogland being a hugely natural carbon sink... which, at this point, it looks like we're gonna need. Badly.
So suddenly, peat land became 'important' to preserve. Less because of the natural areas we were wiping out and more because we're slowly baking the planet to death and we now need things to offset the damage we're doing everywhere else. So. IDK, the people who talk about not buying peat moss should also be people who are driving their cars less, who are recycling, who aren't popping out to buy a coffee that is sourced from god-knows-where, who are walking to work whenever possible - who are actively making change in other areas of their lives instead of hopping on their soapbox while crying 'this thing is bad' at random.
I grew up about 5 minutes from my local forestry and bog land, so it's familiar to me. I can pop out and pick some sphagnum when I need it. I've always been respectful of the area I live in. Most of it now full of wind farms. Sounds good in theory, but the bog land has been filled with roads and gravel and so the natural environment has still been lost, the water table changed, negating the carbon sink nature of the land. This time, in the somewhat ironic name of sustainable energy.
Still. The frogs there are neat and the peat moss is nice, I suppose.

I like using sphagnum for some propagations. Once they're rooted, I usually shake off a bit and add it into the substrate. A few times, the roots were so entwined, that I put the entire root ball into the substrate and the roots eventually grew into it. Still have a few plants that have been in sphagnum for a few years.
I cannot wit for your video on reviving it! I would love to save money (and plastic) if I were able to cultivate my own!

Everyone can't be 100% for everything - 1 no one has the physical capability to do so, but 2 - as you said, everything causes some kind of harm, everything is a resource! So you just need to do what you can when you can. Also looking forward to watching more about live sphagnum!

I recently change the filter in my fish tank because I was having an algee problem and I replaced the sponges with spagnum moss instead , the water on my fish tank never seen clearer and also my fishes are happy I call that a win. Who knew I could use it for my fishes and my plants too

I absolutely agree with you on how amazing and versatile this medium is in the plant relm! i literally use it in all my soil mixes, to prop, save plants, and add a top layer to keep my plants humid. 10 out of 10 for sure.

Your absolutely right, everything has its pros and cons and we need to try to make the best choices we can. I also feel the same about loving nature but unfortunately there are too many who dont feel the same.
The amount of 'plant people' in Facebook groups that seem totally mindless is so frustrating. (Im in Wales UK btw 🏴) Like using big heavy plastic bottles of distilled water ordered from Amazon, buying disposable plastic cups for proping small plants to make money on etc. Come on people if you love plants then surely wanting to keep the jungles alive is a priority! 💚♻️🌍

This video was super helpful, I’ve been wondering about sphagnum peat but I didn’t want to buy a whole bag and not end up using it. I am absolutely crazy about sphagnum moss though! So many of my plants have suffered or died after transferring to from sphag to soil. I didn’t realize that sphag was used long term but with certain plants I don’t even transfer them anymore 😊

Also, you LOOSELY plant cuttings in the sphagnum, which makes un-mossing plants to move them to soil SO easy. I bought some plants from another seller and removing the tightly packed moss was a nightmare.
I think I'm going to have to restart my Hoya mindorensis because I don't think I can get it out :(
I'll be trying long fiber sphagnum to propagate those cuttings!! 🥰

I will get some for helping my daughter's monstera plant. She brought it to my house, begging for me to save it. I've been trimming off the brown leaves and feeding it coffee and fermented rice water. Guess what? New growth is happening! Yay!

Great video! Wondering if anyone has had a problem with spider mites hiding in sphagnum moss? I have never really had any issues with spider mites until I started using sphagnum in my propagation terrarium. Every time I use moss this seems to happen. It could be totally unrelated, but I would appreciate any tips people may have to prevent this moving forward! I would also love tips for how to safely reuse sphagnum without risking the transfer of pests/bacteria/mold etc to another plant! Thanks!

Ahh thank you Harli for explaining this :) I didn't know there was a difference, so I actually refrained from buying sphagnum moss, but I might consider it as a different medium, especially for propagations. Hopefully, you'll get less critical comments surrounding sphagnum moss as I can imagine it being quite tiresome and unpleasant to read all the time.

Fascinating Video, I never knew that about the different moss.
I've been experimenting with the sphagnum moss growing in my yard around my evergreens for cloning different species of plants and trees. I keep it alive and the clones seem to be rooting faster and I nearly have a 100% success rate. The dead commercially available moss seems to bring in a lot of pests that kill my cuttings.
There must be something in the living moss that prevents mold/fungus and insects from taking over 👍 (Maybe the iodine..?)

I think this is one of the saddest situations a lot of people experience. Not just peat moss, but in general, people will switch products or change their shopping habits to help the planet and often times some "eco-friendly" or "naturally harvested" resources actually do the same amount of damage. I use sphagnum moss, actually just started a prop box with sphagnum a few weeks ago and the roots are nice and thick. I will confess we bought this huge cube of peat moss before we knew the harmful harvesting practices of peat. Love your videos keep being amazing!

Harli, are the roots grown in a sphagnum prop box soil roots or water roots?
I’m still learning about how to use sphagnum to prop haven’t been the most successful but it also is able to be boiled and reused

I love sphagnum moss for propagating it always works for me. I tried perlite and it rots.

Can you touch on sphagnum as a long term substrate? I hear about it for propagating and air layering a lot, but not so much permanent substrate.
I imported a choco red ~12 months ago and it's still in a Starbucks cup of moss, SUPER rooted. I'm terrified of disturbing it switching to soil for the repot. But I imagine a climber needs something more solid? But then I fear the chunky mix will be dryer than it's used to and the roots will shrivel.
That’s a great request. I have so much success growing my plants in sphagnum but I know that it cannot deliver as many nutrients as soil long term. However, the thought of transitioning it gives me so much anxiety! It has never gone well for me. 😬
For now, I’ve decided that as long as my plants are thriving and getting bigger in (fertilized) moss….I’m leaving them alone.
I wonder if something like an ABG mix would work, it was designed for tropical plants. I've used it in a vivarium but have not tried it with houseplants.
Sphagnum moss is typically classed as semi hydroponics. So a lot of people who grow in the substrate long term, use nutrients, like you would for water, leca, etc. I’m not sure if there’s added nutrients in sphagnum compared to just growing in water and leca, but you can mix in nutrients and fertiliser into your water and water your plants in sphagnum that way. That gives your plants what it needs to grow and there’s no need to transfer to soil. In terms of climbing plants, I use 3D printed trellises (that I get off Etsy) for them. Place them in the sphagnum, just as you would with soil. I find you may need a little more Velcro (or whatever you use to secure) but that’s not a problem! To me at least :)

I've been looking for moss to purchase that has the potential to come back to life and grow but I'm not sure what the best brands will be. I've heard so many conflicting things. Some say that in the united states, you can't get sphagnum moss that hasn't been treated in a way that kills it completely. Please let me know where you got yours!

If sphagnum is kept moist and has light, it may turn green and start to grow. I've had it happen in a vivarium.
This stuff grows in many lawns in the uk
I do prefer sphagnum for rooting cuttings, healing rotted plants that I've had to cut, and also just for planting cacti and succulents in. The can root into it and stay happy for several years. I might gradually add some soil on top, and a gravel or sand top dressing, but not always. Either way sphagnum is great for aeration and moisture retention, albeit for a brief time. But in that time that it's wet, it really absorbs the water.
I thought coco coir was one of the best sustainable substrates to use? I use it as well, for my reptiles and amphibians. I heard it's so great because it's a by-product of the coconut and coconut water industry. And it would otherwise be wasted?
How do you cope with the risk of rot for succulents? Do you let the moss dry out?
Supposedly cleaning and processing the coir takes a lot of water and some people complain about the loss of rainforest for palm plantations, but I suspect that rainforest loss would happen regardless of whether we make use of the coir.
