This song has unfortunately grown on me. Idk it sounds like some fucked up prog music and I vibe with it. It’s so bad that I can’t help but like it. Would kill to hear a modern remake of this song
It *is* fucked up prog music, especially when hearing each part separately. We've lauded the YM2612 smooth bass sounds when put in expert hands (see SMPS versus GENS), but it is also perfectly apt at doing cursed harsh noise. Truly the most metal of game audio chips.
Search "Tee Lopes Eraser" on Twitter for his take on it; also Average Burgerboy has a version on CZcams. Unfortunately both kinda lose the proggy time signature jumping for the most part.

Actually it's pretty clear that this is a song using SMPS or some other similar Japanese sound driver. The bass is clearly an edit of the bass from Puyo Puyo, the melody instruments as grating as they are have that "edgy" sound that you only get from Japanese games, and the FM snare drum is literally taken straight from Mega Man: the Wily Wars.
While they sounds terrible and out of place in the actual song, the dong sounds alone sound pretty good actually! I thought it was PCM, while it's only synth Edit: I was wrong actually. When I played this today the dong actually sounded like part of the melody but while hearing the song alone with headphones it sounds awful. It has to be due to something interesting, since its composer, Masaru Setsumaru, its a great composer and has made some of the most memoable Sonic music, like Sonic World's theme. Itss not either due to being a SEGA Game Toshokan game, since many of other games relased for it have good music. There must be someting on the development of this game that explains why this is so... well Like this. Seeing it deconstructed helps to imagine the possible reasons. Thanks for your hard work. Must have been a great sufferement having to endure this theme more than once to extract the channels and edit the video.

Also I feel like this game has missed potential. Imagine if the whole game was an RPG and you attack enemies the same way you do to the other player in versus mode. Imagine if a less earrape version of this played between every match. Heh, this could've been the first Storybook Sonic game ever. Really love the medieval aeshtetics in this game honestly and without the Tesla Coil, this actually sounds good. The instrument quality is better than the first 2 classic games for sure.
