Most companies in the UK limit the CycleToWork scheme to £1000 with no way of topping that up. This makes any worthwhile ebike out of the range of the scheme. I have had 3 different employers and all of them used the £1k limit.
unfortunately the cycle2work scheme is horribly restrictive, you have to be employed by an employer on the scheme and if you are on or near minimum wage forget it. If you are self employed, forget it. Also if you have 2 jobs forget that too as you can only claim it through one of the employers and again, the payments cant put you under minimum wage for that one job. You also cant top up the payments with savings to get the value of the bike down to what cycle 2 work will give you.
for some bizarre reason if you are rich you get MORE discount than if you are poor.
it needs scrapping and reimagining. Personally I would like to see grants on commuter style bikes, when we got our leaf we got a 3k grant off the purchase price. My e-bike cost me 2k the only choice I had as self employed was to get it financed.
Grants just increase the cost of goods. However, in principle I agree the CWS scheme should be reimagined.
Yesterday I was servicing in London. £50 train into Liverpool st then e-bike to Shoreditch high st, to, Tottenham Court rd, to , St Paul’s, to, Stockwell then back to Liverpool st. On the bike for probably just over an hour in total 👍 you can’t beat an e-bike 😁
Love this, and thank you for what you do. I did want to use it when i first started working, but i had to get past the probational period, so i bought one on my own and spread the cost over 12mths. Next year I will be using it to get myself a beast for sure.
Your videos inspired me Elish. I've been struggling to work with an old mountain bike, I finally was able to apply through my work for a new bike but the Cycle Solutions limit with my company is £1k with no top ups allowed. So I bought a second hand electric bike, nowt special (but not a cheap Chinese amazon bike) and wow! what a difference it makes to my journey. Even a low powered 250 watt makes hills a breeze. p.s. Where is Holly, more Holly please ;)
Eilis you sounded like my wife there, very knowledgeable, and shes a tax specialist who knows about these rhings.😄 The bit about not having to ride all the way to work was news to me. I asked her why she didnt do it, she said: " I'm dyspraxic and over sixty and i dont bounce like i did as a kid so probably best not!" 😅
Elish I just bought my first e-bike!!! As I’m in the US it was a 2023 Specialized Turbo Vado SL (super light). I’m loving it ❤🎉
I have just used the cycle to work scheme to get my first ebike I'm now waiting for the bike to be delivered I can't wait. 😁😁😁👍
My company are on the cycle scheme (up to £3,000) & last year i applied 3 times & got knocked back each time. I earn more than enough & pay a lot of tax. Nobody from my hr spokemto me about it & my refusals were just emailed to me
My commute - twice a month across the Danube, 6km round trip with a Bogist C1 Pro scooter for €550.
Assuming 15W/km that would be about 2.4 kWh per year!
Commuting is very secondary - use it for shopping and exploring and done over 4000km on it in nearly 2 years.
THUMBNAIL game top tier😂🤣🤣🤣🗣️
A really useful video and good to know - thanks @Electroheads 😃👍
Could you check the after payment after 12 months part, Ive done the C2W for three years now and at the end of each year after paying for 12 months through salary sacrifice, I had to pay a fee for both the "own it now price (the price in your video example)" or "extend for three years (10% of bike price)". BTW thanks Eilis for all your great and fun content.
I WFH so have zero commute mileage or cost. Does that mean I can’t access the scheme? Can I just “pretend” I commute ? I do meet colleagues in London once or twice a year… but I wouldn’t take a bike to the train station as they get pinched.
It cost me nothing or close to nothing to travel daily. Most of the time I ride an eBike that I charge at work, my second most used form of transport is a work car that I use for work purposes and the company pays for the fuel, thirdly I use an eScooter that I also keep and charge at work (eScooter riding is legal where I live) and lastly I use public transport which I do have to pay for but I use that rarely.
My two vehicles are a Renault Zoe and an Axon electric bike. I really enjoy both of them.
What qualifies as minimum wage ???? I mean if you just say the hourly wage and work 36 hours a week. Then take some person who works 40 hours a week , and the difference over a month , then a year. The amount is substantially different. But they both still earn the same hourly minimum rate.
Lol that thumbnail
The thumbnail is a lie 😂
Only looked to see it 😂

And we get *stunning* babies, like 5 - 6
_And I'm getting too far with this_
Great video and very well explained A. I'm self employed and use an electric van to work so very cheap 😊👍
I’m self employed and no way could afford an electric van
Looking at that shumbnail: yep, the Barbie we electroheads deserve!
My workplace has the cycle to work scheme but the way it is set out on our website we can only buy a bike off of one specific site that they have given us and there aren’t any electric or folding electric bikes on there for less than £1000
same issue here, or the only bikes available are shite and not worth it
I bought a Brompton via this route in 2011 when I worked for HSBC. Nobody understood how it worked.
No cycle to work scheme in Sweden, but I can through the company get a subsidized health activity like a 45 minute spinning class, but I'm too tired for that after my 2x 45 minute bike commute 🤷♂
Yeah, very good plan making this video. For me, I tried to convince my employer that I would cycle 125 km a day and they didn't buy it.. I also looked into a speed pedelec (1 day a week is all I need, and 1h15 is doable and good for my health). But as it turned out, the bicycles they were co paying for actually get through their 750Wh batteries in 15-25 kilometers on the highest setting. Wow. So no dice yet. But these schemes could get way more people to work on a bike. Which would be excellent!
What if I now work from home, permanently? My contract (pre-pandemic), stated I travelled to the office one day per week and worked from home the rest, now it's been updated to be at home permanently. Do I qualify?
Please add Vivup cycle to work scheme as I would love to buy an ADO Air from you but this scheme doesn’t seem to be supported. What is the reason for that?
Do you ever have a sale on your bikes especially those that are used as , I can’t think of the word , you know what I mean when people try them out to see if they like them, still can’t think of the word ?
Cycle to work is still not good if you need a non standard bike say a recumbent or recumbent trike are either nearly impossible to get or terribly expensive. Also like you said for those on minimum wage you can not get on the scheme. We really need to work on this issue where it more expensive to live when you do not have a lot of money.
My scheme is the Cycle2Work Halfords scheme - although you don’t have to select from Halfords (lots of independent retailers are listed) I don’t think the electroheads shop is one of them BOO!
I think it should be kaw to wear head protection on a ebike as well as motorcycle I rude motorcycles an ebikes I lost 2 good friends that where illegal riding a motorbike without a helmet an think it makes sence ti extend the law to ebike than cab easily do 30mph illegal or not
What do others think?
My Axon cost me £500 because of the state subsidy and Help to Buy Scheme.
Do schemes like this work for the self employed?
thumbnail got me
can you select an e-bike with a larger than 250w motor using c2w?
No
Yes you can. i got 750w bike. Only thing they check is that the store you are purchasing the bike is in the scheme and the price cap.
@@damnson666 they are illegal in the UK
@@therealunclevanyaYeah I know. I got one regardless.
@@damnson666 my comment wasn't against more powerful bikes, I had my eye on an Engwe, just that given the CTW scheme is an initiative of HMRC Tax along with your employer who technically owns it, a bike over 250 watts is illegal and if you are found out you will be in trouble.
She said no
Yo, definitely pin this video on your homepage electroheads👍
What about pensioners?
What about retired people ? Example let’s say one gets old age pension and one is only allowed £ 12,570 tax free , can you get a tax allowance if you provide a receipt to the tax man I suppose the correct things in this modern day tax person , maybe start a new scheme retired to stay alive .
Retired people don't cycle to work.
They get retirement properties, bus pass, senior discounts at the chippy and barbers 😂
@@jroobz but life is about choices, for those who don’t want bus, chips, and don’t have hair , it would be fair if they could get tax breaks on bikes , most have paid tax for forty years which have contributed to society for a long time , are we one nation be they six or a hundred and six , stand together cycle together. That’s how the cycle of life is , wow got a pun within the message = dying is easy ,comedy is hard. Take care,
So not including pensioners?
Unfortunately not all employers participate in the scheme
That's not fair! You click baited me
Being a remote worker I'm guessing I wouldn't qualify which is why I've never looked into it
No I used to work remotely and I got the cycle2work scheme, they don’t really check tbh
Im on cycle2work scheme. One of the conditions is that 50% of the use is for commuting. However no one actually follows you around and checking where have you been with your bike :D
Just cycle from your bedroom to your workstation and you're covered!
the nokia 3310 was launched in 2000, so it wasn't around when people were worrying about y2k
I like Eilis!
Feels like I've been clickbaited following that thumbnail, where's the pink outfit
For the audio engineer: please make the videos louder. Thank you
My work not do it 🤷
The thumbnail is bait trap/thirst trap
They know how internet works(especially in Asia)
And in business there ain't no right/ wrong
Got camel?
The government & council's should do more to encourage sales + more secure places to store ebikes indoors. Get people out of cars & idiots off illegal e-scooters !!!
Everything wrong with idiots, nothing wrong with scooters.
@@ahaveland the laws on scooters are ridiculous
@@bighes100 I know. Scandalous even. Everyone should be riding them instead of using cars and filling our lungs with filth.
They are a threat to the profits of car, fossil fuel and servicing mafia which is milked by the government.
Ebikes and scooters are by far the best personal transport devices ever.
I can push mine around Tescos, load up wtih 6 carrier bags and ride 10km home, and don't have to worry about parking, petrol or theft and for less than 5p of "fuel" that I make myself with solar panels.
Micromobility threatens the system, even if it would make a much better world.
It's madness there is still so much opposition and Ludditism.
In India there are Laws and rules
No one gives a focking sheit 😭😭😭
Funny thing is there are illegal e-bikes and legal e-scooters out there
So flip on its head you can get the most expensive bike the scheme will allow and sell it for 20% profit?! 😂
Learn the ballots by the Chinese bike much better half of the cost
My employer has a £5,000 limit and I'm about to go haywire with buying a bike :D :D :D
