PJ Harvey and Ramy Essam - The Camp (Official Video)

- PJ Harvey and Egyptian recording artist Ramy Essam have come together to write and record ‘The Camp’ which they hope will raise awareness and much needed support towards the health and educational well-being of displaced children in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. The artists will donate all net profits from the track to Beyond Association in the Bekaa Valley, a national Lebanese non-Governmental Organisation. Beyond Association provides services such as access to education, healthcare, and psycho-social support mainly through art therapy, neuro-physiotherapy, and recreational activities.
‘The Camp’ - released digitally on Friday 9 June 2017 - was recorded in Bristol with Harvey’s longtime collaborator John Parish, who produced and mixed the track.
"It is hard to comprehend the scale of the crisis in Lebanon, a country of 4 million now hosting over 1 million Syrian refugees,” states photo-journalist Giles Duley whose arresting photographs feature in the official music video, edited by Rick Holbrook. “The infrastructure of the country is pushed to its limit, and nowhere is that situation more desperate than in the Bekaa Valley. However, there are some amazing organisations doing incredible, effective, and selfless work on the ground there, and of all the NGOs I have documented, none have impressed me more than Beyond. To visit their schools and witness their programs is to see hope - and that is something we have to support.”
The following is an excerpt from Ramy Essam's verse of The Camp, translated from Egyptian to English: "I wish I had wings to fly away, far away. Meet smiley faces who never ask where I came from; not to ask about colour, race, or religion. What difference does it make if we're all humans? No wars, no limits, no borders. Earth is everyone's right.”

PJ Harvey is a true artist, not married to her former endeavors, who evolves and challenges herself and her "fans". This song is terrific and has opened my eyes to the children in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. Thank you, PJ and Ramy.
Who would have thought that out of the 90's queens(Björk,Tori Amos, Pj Harvey.) Pj would be the one who's making the most accessible music, 25 years later.

The Camp
I saw children through a fence,
standing by blue canvas tents,
I called to them, they moved like ghosts,
gliding, silent and remote.
A girl, whose mouth was a straight line,
looked like a creature out of time.
A grey boy, burnt by cigarettes,
pushed his scarred hands through the fence.
He tried to smile at me and said,
In my place you would have commit
suicide from what I’ve seen.
I found it difficult to breathe.
He said his school became a jail
and armed men tore out fingernails
of children tied with cord and wire.
His face grew old before my eyes.
And when I turned and tried to run
I saw ten-thousand children
were laid in lines, wrapped in white sheets
along a godforsaken street.
I prayed an angel from the clouds
would free the children from their shrouds.
I prayed and waited for an age
I waited but no angel came.
A great gesture and solid work with Ramy. You have produced a song which is hauntingly beautiful and a video which evokes the suffering the Western world has caused. It is great that people of high profiles keep us aware that all of us can contribut to helping, however little we can give, something is better than nothing. Polly: You preyed an angel would come. You are already here, an angel if there ever has been one

Beautiful 👍 but what about the African refugees maintained in slavery in Libya? Where women are forced to give birth onto the floor... where they sleep and then slowly watch their children.... die of malnutrition and of lack of specific care?
