I would not point a finger on a specific countries or governments, colonization started much earlier and by some western European countries.
The main root cause I would put on human greed for power and money, that goes well along with today's society.
There are no real regulations on world level that can put limit on human greed for power, growing exponentially over time and causing problems like climate changes, nuclear power, and artificial intelligence as a future threat for humanity.

@@Mendaxxx False is plenty because arguing with people like you is like arguing with a beggar on the street.
Indian history is one of constant conquests by authoritarian dictatorships. People like you aren't mad about conquest or oppression, you are simply trying to play the beggar as if you've been wronged. In reality, Indians have no right to complain about a game that they so willfully played for ALL of their history simply because they lost. It's a bad look. The thief has no right to complain about getting robbed.
Then there is the idea of Indians focusing solely on "what they are owed" If you want to tally up what was taken from India you must also consider what was given to India. When you weigh the two you find that India isn't owed anything. In fact India would OWE.
Everything developed about India is an accomplishment of the West. In fact, western technology is the sole reason that an extra 900 MILLION Indian's are alive today via increased carrying capacity. But you won't hear any gratitude. Cars, phones, radio, satellites, internet, airplanes, computers: all accomplishments by the West shared freely with India. Yet you won't hear any gratitude, not even from the extra 900 million people in India because of it. The list goes on and it is a very long one.
Then there is the idea of ideology: the very governing system that India has implemented is an American ideology that has been spread throughout the world as a matter of policy. The treaties signed with Britain during WW2 ended the sustainability of colonialism. Then the English speaking population, with the advantage of western thoughts and ideas naturally came to dominate the sub-continent. Democracy, woman's rights, the rights of humans: all contributions by the West. Ask yourself why a Muslim or Woman in India doesn't make the same complaints towards the West? Because they understand that their rights stem from Western ideology, yet there are still large segments of Indian society that would seek to deny these rights.
Next, if you want to level things out, why not do it across all dimensions? There is the idea of the Caste system. Why don't the upper castes give all of their wealth to the lower for the constant oppression both physically and mentally through brutality and religious justification. Why doesn't every man give up all their assets for the constant oppression of women. What about the conquests of the past within India?
Lastly there is the very idea of 'India', which was only unified under foreign occupation, first through the Caliphate, then, after years of civil war, the British. India was falling apart at the seems after the Caliphate dissolved.
India has no moral standing to make such a claim and such a claim, in and of itself, only makes sense when you ignore the vast contributions the West has made not only to India, but the entire world.

But if you keep letting the logging companies keep logging, everything will disappear. Hundreds of thousands of animals will die. Do you think that's the right thing to do? Indeed!
To supplement all this, as Michael Parenti puts it, these countries aren't underdeveloped they're overexploited.
Of course this is all obfuscated through ideology and propped up materially via a global corporate empire directed currently by US hegemony, the ideology being effectively transmitted through essentially a substitution cipher of euphemisms with different private/public understandings along with a complex superstructural network that overarches this global supremacy at the behest of transnational corporate/financial capital using this entirely contrived conception of Westphalian nation-states to create arbitrary divisions between the global working class (and denote bourgeois spheres of influence to capital, an example of that distinct private/public understanding), and so the colonialism/imperialism/mercantilism of old that can no longer be justified explicitly through pseudoscience or [insert nebulous concocted non-material nonsense here] becomes just the good 'ol US empire (tm) (r) (c) "giving aid" or "freedom" or whatever manufactured nonsense. In other words, this grotesque belligerent _literally earth destroying_ system is merely normalized and abstracted into "rational" market logic, perpetual profit extraction at quite literally all other costs ("externalities" to put on the neoclassical econ/neoliberal ideological blindfold).
To briefly expand on the mechanism for anyone circumstantially unfamiliar, the Bretton-Woods international financial system leveraged by the US post-WWII by being the only industrialized nation-state _not_ bombed to hell effectively took the imperial baton from the British and their pound sterling, establishing the institutions of the IMF/World Bank and cementing the dollar as the "global reserve currency". As Vijay is pointing out these institutions act as imperial tentacles lending capital in the form of dollar loans under the stipulation of absolute control of labor/markets/resources by US capital - any nation-states refusing to bend the knee like Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, et al. of course get perpetually coup-ed by the CIA or just overtly invaded, tracking the CIA's "regime change" operational history will reveal this so transparently that it baffles the mind how we allowed this to somewhat knowingly occur, especially in such overt imperialism like Vietnam (also see: Pentagon Papers, wikileaks #freeassange ) - I would say the explanation as to why (though not an excuse, merely to understand descriptively) red scare(s)/Taft-Hartley to kill the heart and soul of labor power in the US established briefly by the New Deal - but of course, still disgusting to say the least, trying to paraphrase as much as possible here ie just give a jumping off point for anyone to further delve into this insanity, hopefully that's clear...to quote Parenti again as I think like Vijay, he gets at this succinctly and cuts through the loads of bs we're ubiquitously bombarded with well, importantly highlighting the _only_ political question here, cui bono? (who benefits?):
_“In their perpetual confusion, some liberal_ [as opposed to leftist, to be clear for US people who have been taught the bounds of "the left" are limited to liberals who have more or less nothing to do with any anticapitalist left ie any *actual* left] _critics conclude that foreign aid and IMF and World Bank structural adjustments ‘do not work’; the end result is less self-sufficiency and more poverty for the recipient nations, they point out. Why then do the rich member states continue to fund the IMF and World Bank? Are their leaders just less intelligent than the critics who keep pointing out to them that their policies are having the opposite effect? No, it is the critics who are stupid not the western leaders and investors who own so much of the world and enjoy such immense wealth and success. They pursue their aid and foreign loan programs because such programs do work. The question is, work for whom? Cui bono?”_ - Michael Parenti
_"The ultimate hidden truth of the world is that it is something we make and could just as easily make differently."_ - the late great David Graeber, his book on debt and its history, Debt: The First 5,000 Years also _incredibly_ eye-opening as to the _actual_ use/origin of money/debt for directing armies at scale and more generalized social bondage. _"Capitalism needs debt like Christianity needs hell"_ as Yanis Varoufakis
put it succinctly, referring to the Roman Empire's adoption of Christianity and concoction of the concept of hell as a last ditch attempt to usurp its revolutionary potential toward maintaining its waning imperial control. Hopefully that filled in any potential lacunas if not already known entirely, and/or made sense lol...solidarity!

Falsified history and misplaced sense of superiority. Read up on what the Portuguese discovered when they first landed in Africa... Kingdoms and Empires and cities that were technologically advanced, cleaner and better laid out that Lisbon or London at the time.

As a Pakistani this man has won my heart! He indirectly stood up for Pakistan in a sense that every time the IMF gives a loan to Pakistan it lectures us and etc, when this is our money! This is my Indian forefathers money, this is south Asian money! 45 trillion pounds! God! I mean don’t get me wrong, we Pakistanis are no better that every 2 days we are begging the IMF! Doesn’t look good that we are at their doorsteps every other day! But, the positive is, at least we are getting OUR money back hahaha..That’s the positive..it may be nothing compared to what they stole, but, it’s still something!

Very admirable speech. All Colonialism affected races/countries are in debt from the wreckless and greedy nature of the dominant nations since colonial expansion. Europeans (including US/Russia) are the reason why the world is in a mess today forcing non european nations into these conflicts which still continue to this day. The world wars and any other conflict, included the pandemics could have been avoided but colonialism forced everyones hand to be victims of its own wrath. So much innocent lives have been lost in the last 300 years and plenty more will be lost in the future due to hatred through racial/religious indifference, greed, power, pride. I am a Punjabi/South Indian born and still living in Australia. I was almost white washed but I found my roots and this knowledge I have passed down to my children. This strength I have has kept me challenging any racially motivated individual or groups who spoke ill of anyone who was different of themselves and living in Australia, from what I have witnessed you see a lot of racism going on here mainly coming from caucasian/european backgrounds. Instead of hatred, I show respect to any Pakistani, Afghani, Nepali, Sri Lankan, Bangali person I come accross because they are really my countrymen regardless of these borders dividing us placed by the british. I know this was mainly due to religious violence but if India was not divided or conquered, I believe we could have co-existed to build a strong unified india with the economic strength surpassing China at an earlier stage, our military strength on par with US to have the position to condemned actions taken by the top 3 superpowers, but most of all we would have deminished poverty and famine through the potential of its growing industry/agriculture. It would have been China and India side by side not needing to conquer but lead the world economically instead of having europeans, US and Russia leading the world in violence. It is very upsetting to see the decay of colonialism still being witnessed to this day on India's/Australia's streets but I am proud to see India slowly making progression to become a better nation. It is good to see India will surpass UK in GDP by end of this year.
