    There's a really lovely rock brick panel on the house, and I think it would be very striking and cohesive to bring the same tones into the landscape by choosing rocks which mimic the colors of the rock on the house.

    Laura - i agree with Aaron regarding the boulders. Don't go crazy with them like you tend to do with plants. 1. They are dang expensive 2. They can't be moved around like plants so you really need to be sure where you want them. Perhaps you could photoshop them in so you could actually see what they will look like and if too many are too weighty for the property. Three sounds like the right amount to start with. Love your choices. i think i will add a smoke bush to my backyard.

    Take a look at Japanese gardening design on how to place the rocks. They use triangles and scale to make a pleasing balance of the rocks with the landscape. Also, burying the rocks will help them look grounded. When rocks or just set it on top of the ground they look unsettled.

    My .02 but only because you asked! As someone who has selected and placed boulders throughout my landscape and it was a bit nerve racking as I hadn't done this before either. Factors to keep in mind are the existing stone accent on the home, the style of the home along with the landscape style. You said the landscape is shaping up to be "cottagie." Those flat jagged stones might not fit the style profile nor does the color orange as scene on many of the stones. I think playing a very dark stone (like the large one you point to and ask Aaron to guess the weight) off a light stone will give you some additional interest and then you can accent them with plants. The dark stones at the end are also lovely! Don't worry about choosing too dark of a stone that it will blend in with the dark mulch. You are going to get elevation, contrast against the adjacent plants, AND there are always lovely little grown cover plants with pretty flowers or foliage that you can tuck around the base of the boulders to break up the dark rock on dark mulch look. Looking forward to see what you choose!

      I live in MN so frequently get to the North Shore of Lake Superior. I've brought home lots of rocks between the size of a loaf of bread (max.) to a small wheel of Brie cheese. I use them as cobblestones to edge my flower beds.
      When my next-door neighbor was cleaning up her foundation planting for a row of green & white hostas (yawn) she asked if I'd like her rocks. I turned her down, I said mine were specially selected (mine are darker colors, hers were orange). I am very picky.

  • @krosa2471
    @krosa2471 Před 5 lety +29

    Take a few good pics of the brickwork on that house and use those colors to help you find the rocks you want. A yard that small shouldn't have a ton of rocks. There is a house near me that did that and it looks really bad. Rockwork like that looks better with a much bigger yard. In my opinion.

    • @cindycarmichael9094
      @cindycarmichael9094 Před 5 lety +9

      You also might consider that randomly placing rocks may not look natural. Putting a couple together with the grass is better, rather than alternating with plants. Keep in mind that if you need to divide the grass down the road, you won't be able to get to it easily.

    Until you described how the driveway corner evergreen would grow up and through the rock, I didn't understand rocks. Then one of the commenters said to bury a lot of it so it is sticking up through the soil, not just laying on top. That got me to thinking and remembering when I have seen rocks that I really liked in the landscape - they were beautiful, especially like another commenter said to have a place for rain to collect for birds. Planting the rock will also keep it low enough to see when backing out of the driveway. I don't think I've ever watched a landscape show that used rocks. You are on the cutting edge of this in video land. Thanks and after thinking and learning more, I do believe it will look wonderful - one area or POSSIBLY two. Never mind, your vision is so much better than mine.

    No Laura.. that's too many rocks. you will weigh down the small place and it will look like they are trying too hard.. and it'll look like holding down a grass tarp.. the home is not big enough or grandeur enough for that kind of weight.. it is more cottagey and gorgeous... place rocks along the house and both fences not along the driveway or sidewalk. It's a front yard not a backyard. A beautiful large rock in front of the house like you said and a beautiful window box like only you can create will match the picket fence and the cottage look of the area. You got this.. :)) I love the the colors your using.. you always have the best ideas in the plants you use.. I learn so much each time you crate a garden space.. I'm very excited about the smoke bush.. LoVE LOVE LOVE it.. Thanks for another awesome video. !! :)) .. forgive me.. the boxwoods next to the porch aren't working bcz of that big plant is already claiming that space.. I think you're awesome and amazing still

      One can get carried away easily. Best to keep the number (and size) to a minimum to keep to scale of the house. Seven may be too much. Plus, that's a relatively busy street. Fire Dept. may have rules about how closely you can plant near their hydrant.

    One thing to consider is that some of the rocks are still coated with dust/dirt from the quarry. Take a gallon of water and a scrub brush next time, and brush a small area to see if the color of the rock changes. Once you get it "home", pressure wash it to bring out any coloration.
    Another thing to consider are your shapes - just like plants, rocks come in a variety of shapes including the columnar (basalt), layered (slate/shale), round (weathered by glaciers or water). They can be single (specimen) multi (clumps) or plentiful (rock field). (of course, my mom sometimes wondered if my head was full of rocks :) ) Rocks - who knew?

    Rocks-- I suggest smooth surfaced rocks. Especially if you place any near the entry that are 24” tall or so. People will sit on them as they’re gathered to say good bye...you know those extra thousand words before ya actually get in the car... My husband and I just installed a boulder wall around a front patio in July. First thing our 11yo grandson did when he got out of the car was beeline straight to the wall and walk across them. Rocks are a magnet for kids. So smooth surfaces are great, imo.

    Laura, I'm so relieved that Aaron was with you at the rock place! He's 100% correct about you not needing to try to use too many boulders in your relative's front garden! Placing 7 or 8 big rocks in such a small area would, indeed, look contrived! Remember, Laura, "Less is more!" Nice roses, shrubs & vine. However, Laura, are you absolutely sure that your sister-in-law is fine with you putting so many of the same plants in HER yard that you have in YOURS? I'm all for using SOME of the same ideas (i.e. the hibiscus, smoke bush, a couple of the trees); but, when it comes to rose bushes, how much input did she ACTUALLY have as to the type of rose, their color, etc.? Certain plants (like hydrangeas, roses & clematis) are PERSONAL touches that we women like to choose ourselves! Did she choose that rose color or did you? The homeowners have a baby & I can't help imagining tender little fingers being pricked by thorns of roses! Also, doesn't planting roses THAT CLOSE to the driveway, where people will be walking to & from their cars, the mailbox, etc. go against proper landscape design? I'd hate for my visitors to have their clothing "snagged" by rose thorns! I like MOST of the plants you've put in their garden so far; but, I just don't like the 4-petaled clematis as much as the ones with 5 or more petals! They look fuller; and, therefore the color pops more! I'm very happy that the huge elderberry has been dug out! It was wayyy too big for where it was & I think it looks better with nothing at all there; than to have something so big. I'm anxious to see what you decide to plant across the front of the house now! I REALLY hope you don't try to make it more formal looking! Thanks for more of this garden makeover! Take care. God bless you all!🌾💜

    I'm really liking the pace of these videos. Part of me is always going to crave more because I love the complete overhauls, they're just so satisfying. But these videos are really making me feel much better about the realistic progress in my own landscape, reassuring me that it's okay to go slow and just work in chunks. Thanks so much for that!

      I believe she said it's her sister-in-law's home (Aaron's sister?). I recognized the cobalt blue planter on the front step (see previous videos) from when she filled it with an arrangement for a house-warming gift. I loved the planter so much I went to Home Depot and got one for my house. Though, I haven't been watchful so it's looking rather sad with it's moonflower centerpiece with 3 diamond euphorbia. Next year.

    Thank you so much for doing this slow video! It gives me permission to wait and do a few plants at a time and then continue when I can. For so many years, I have watched videos like yours and wished I could do something like that, however, I have put it off because I can’t do it all at once. Kudos to you for giving me the permission to do it slowly!

    Great progress. Can't wait to see the 3 or 4 rocks in place. If you run out of yards to make over you could have a contest offering your services and some plants ... Perhaps spring 2020? Hint hint. Please make it open to 🇨🇦 too ... more bang for the $ with our exchange rate right now. And yes I'd sign up since 2 attempts to make over my front yard in 5 years have been total disasters.

    Design wise with the rocks you want to go with odd numbers not even. So if you do more than three do 5 not 4.

    How about a pet rock🤣😂🤣😂.
    My dad hauled a ton of rocks to the new log home they were building in 1970 and my mum didn't like the color, so he took them back down highway 17 in Ontario Canada. He took mum with him and they found a lot of grey rocks with fools gold veins running through them. Their home designed fire place turned out beautifully. Trial and error plus persistence pays off. Fun road trip.
    Exciting watching this process 👍.

    I think 3 to 5 rocks might be a better choice. I feel like 7 might make the yard feel a bit heavy. I agree with you that the darker rocks are the best choice. They would compliment the foliage of the plants you have chosen, and blend with the house colors perfectly. Have you thought about maybe a stacked shale water feature by the front porch?! That would be kind of fun! Maybe a Birds Nest Spruce at the corner by the driveway would work. They are low growing, and don't get very big. I did that in my yard and it looks amazing.

    I love the idea of adding the rocks, especially to that little nook at the door step. My vote is definitely for the mossy rocks, although...the sunny portions of the yard may kill the moss -- but in my head that would look so natural and beautiful! 😌❤🙌🏾

    Looking better with every addition. I would start with 3 rocks, I also think a lighter color will bring more contrast and bring both weight and light to it. love this as we have new beds this year also. 🙂🌼

    When thinking about rocks and boulders, I always remember their duel purpose: for kids & critters to climb on &/or a comfy seat to rest on (if possible.) So I'd never go for jagged or sharp edged except if only purely decorative.

    I wouldn’t scatter rocks in the landscape. Unless they are huge they would get lost. Besides I don’t really understand the aesthetic values of random rocks in the garden, especially in a flat urban plot. I can understand creating a rock garden, or a rocky bed/area but I don’t see the point of adding boulders in a conventional garden. But whatever suits the owners is fine I guess.
