After looking through SO MANY different tutorials (some free, some not) I have picked my FAVORITE grocery tote bag! This is super fast to sew together, extremely beginner friendly, incredibly durable and SO PRETTY.
The tutorial is by Purl Soho. They provide great step-by-step instructions and photos to make this wonderful bag.
I tweaked it just a little, changing the measurements to allow for a 2-toned bag, and combining bits of each of their 3 methods to make a lined, boxed bottom bag.
I hope you enjoy the tutorial! Make yourself and everyone you know one of these to replace their boring plastic grocery bags.

This is truly the best reversible shopping bag pattern available. The method that Jess presents is genius for several reasons: the clever way of adding the lining, enclosing the seams, and attaching the woven straps are simple to sew yet makes the bag very sturdy. I make more than a hundred each summer to donate to a local breast cancer clinic to give the patients, so I verify what a huge time savings Jess's method makes. It was an 'ah ha!' moment for me- I instantly sewed a bag Jess's way and was thrilled to be able to complete the bag in less than 15 minutes. Game changer!! For those that are new to sewing, don't worry if it takes you much longer to complete, that's normal. Even as a veteran sewer, the first time I use a new clothing pattern, it takes me a couple of days because I really have to think about the sequence etc. What is revolutionary about Jess's sequence is sewing the straps as the same time as the finished edge- previously I would finish the edge and then sew the straps on top of that. In addition, I sewed 2 separate bags and attached them together for lining- big time waster. Lastly, using the French/flat seam method for the raw edges is so quick and very durable. Previously I was serging the raw edges of both lining and outer bag before combining, so yeah, it was a day's work to complete one lined shopping bag. I am so excited because I now sew lined shopping bags the Jess way, I whipped up my hundred bags in 6 days! Thank you, thank you Jess for sharing this!
This is genius sewing !
😊😊
I’m looking to do this too .. what is the final size of bag please? Thank you so much.!
Yes, I missed the final size of the bag too. Also I don’t see the cutting measurements for the lining please and thank you.
Some great short cuts here for a bag I make very similar but your tips make it easier and quicker.
Thanks, Debby
You don't know what a comfort it was for me to 'hear' that even veteran sewers take time to adjust to making a new project. I thought there was something wrong with me because my project is a messenger bag and it was taking me forever to figure it out. I've never made a bag before and I would say I am a mid-experienced sewer. And of course, everything looks easier on online tutorials. :) This bag will be my next project!
Finally, saw how French seams are done. That's great. Makes the inside look great! Love your video. Thanks.
Thank you for watching Anne!
I love this bag, especially the way it's done with french seams! I'm making a couple right now.
Hello, I have not used canvas before, do I need to get the duck canvas, and will it be washable? Thank you.
By far the best tutorial on this type of bag I've ever seen. Anybody can make a great bag from this tutorial! Great job! And the boxed corner with the french seam finish!! Girrrrl!!
Haha right Elaine?! French seams? I was blown away!
Ditto
Great video and I loved learning the French seam!
Totalmente!!!
I just found this tutorial. I finished two bags today and I was so proud of myself at how lovely these bags came out. You’re right it was super easy. Thank you for doing this.
Always looking for the best patterns to make grocery bags and WOW my searching is over. This pattern is super easy. I just love it.
I make Morsbags from recycled upholstery and cotton fabric. All my bags are lined and I often add pockets so every bag is unique. I give away all my bags and this pattern has just made my day. THANKYOU
As a beginner at sewing, I love, love to create this bag! I have made like 20 of them now, giving to all my family and friends. Thank you and Purl for helping me.
How much would you say is your cost? I like to sew. But its so expensive 😢
Thanks for creating this video. I have to admit that I was intimidated to tackle a bag with lining, and boxed corners, and the trim color. You made it look fun and broke each step down so simply that it was easy. I made 6 bags in a couple nights for my girl's weekend. I hope they love them!
ESTÁ MUY LINDO , PERO , ME GUSTARÍA QUE LAS MEDIDAS TAMBIÉN LAS PUSIERAS EN CM. MUCHAS GRACIAS Y ESTÁ FÁCIL PARA HACER
Thank you, Jess. Your energy is infectious. It is 3am in South Afica. I am right now going to jump up and make lots for my sisters and niece's. Abosolutely easy and practical. Will be proud to give as gifts to use over and over.
I've made about a dozen of these. I love giving them away. You do an awesome job teaching. Thank you!
I love, love, love this bag, and my husband does too because he does the grocery shopping. I am definitely going to make more, and when I show them to my sisters I know that they will want one or several of them. Thank you for your great tutorials. Keep up the great videos.
I watched this then made 3 of these yesterday morning. I did my grocery shopping today and just love them. Got compliments from the person next to me at the self checkout. I folded them in thirds then rolled them up from the bottom and put an elastic around each one. I have a little fabric basket that will hold four of them. I will store them in my vehicle like that. Maybe this will help me remember to take them in the store with me. I do just love them. Here in Maine we will have to use something like this starting on Earth Day. Thanks so much for this great tutorial. I teach a sewing class and this is definitely on my list of projects to do. Thank you so much. Love your channel.
I'm so happy to hear you are enjoying using these, Barbara! I've made so many for family members, and we all do the same thing. Keep them rolled up in our cars, so we never forget to use them.
This is a great tutorial! Thank you for taking the time to find a great assortment of patterns and combining them to make an easy and pretty reusable bag!
Thanks Tina! There are so many other options out there! I'm eager to find some other variations to share.
I’m brand new to sewing. This is going to be my first project. You explained it so well I’m sure I can make it. 💜
I always get my husband to cut my fabric, he does it so accurately, he's my angel.❤ Beautiful bag, so easy to follow thank you
Thank you, Jessica, for an excellent tutorial and the fantastic pattern (nod to Purl). I’ve made at least 15 and am making more for gifts! I love this bag. Incredibly durable and they’re gorgeous! I use curtains, table cloths, and other fabrics from thrift stores for the complimentary fabrics. And they wash up in a quick minute!
I made this bag last week for my mum. It was my first bag project and I absolutely loved it. I’m fast becoming obsessed with bag making and I love it!
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing. French seams are always amazing.
I never thought in a million years I could make anything like this tote bag! You’re a wonderful teacher! Can’t wait to see what else you give me confidence to do! Thank you!!!!
Thank you so much for creating such a fun project, esp for a beginner sewer. I made two and can't wait to give them as gifts!
I just made this bag for the first time. Thanks for making it so easy, Jess!
love your tutorials, just found them yesterday while looking up something ,so subscribed for sure!!
This tote is fantastic! I have made 8, yes, 8 so far! Keeping them in the car for shopping. They go together so quickly and a great way to use the left over fabrics for the tops of the bags. Thank you, Jess!
Wow! That's fantastic Michelle! Keeping them in the car is such a great idea. I'm so glad you enjoy making them!
Love this bag! I just made one and it’s great. Perfect stocking stuffer
I have now made this bag and the larger version several times. Embroidering a design on the non- pocket side. They have all turned out fabulously - each one uniquely different and personalized. Thank you for both sizes.
That's amazing! Thank you for sharing!
When you need to press 1/2” in for example, here is an easier way to measure for the fold: instead of marking at 1/2” and trying to fold on that line, make a mark at DOUBLE what you want (1” here) and fold the raw edge to your marked line.
😱😱 Holy guacamole this is the best idea!! I'm using this tomorrow. Thank you for the tip!
I'm sorry can you please explain in what step in the directions you are referring?
@@barbra429 Go to 8 minutes 31 seconds (8:31). The step where we are folding a long straight line. Hope this helps!
@@OklaRoots Yes I figured it out thank you love this tutorial! New subscriber!
Barbra and I just meant in general, it seems easier to me when I have to fold fabric over itself
I've looked at so many patterns for tote bags and yours is my very favorite! And your personality is too cute!
Aww thank you so much, Rita!
Wow! This is so lovely. I seriously love this bag. The tutorial is so easy to follow. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely love the added touches, thanks.
“A French pencil” lol! New subscriber!
Can’t wait to make a slew of these for me and my friends! Thanks so much.
Yay! I'm excited for you to make some as well! Let me know how it goes.
Thank you, Jess. Your tutorial is so awesome that I posted it to our town's Facebook group.
Thank you for this awesome tutorial! I’ve made about 4 of these so far. Only one with boxed corners. Everyone loves them. Easy for a beginner sewer like me
love it. Going to try it. It is one of the easiest I have seen, Thanks
This is the best tote bag tutorial and you are so fun to watch! Thank you so much for putting this together
Thank you for such kind words!
I love it! The French seam, oh my! I just love it! It is a game changer.
Isn't it wild, Debbie? I make bags all the time, and I almost never see a french seem being used. So handy!
I just made this and it was so easy! I can already tell this is going to be my new go-to shopping bag. I was worried my quilting cotton would be too flimsy at the top, so I ironed on some mid-weight fusible interfacing. That worked perfectly and didn't add much time or effort. Thank you so much for the tutorial!
I’ve made a couple of these and they turned out great but I have a question about the dimensions of the bottom and the lining. The lining dimensions that you show are longer than the bottom. Shouldn’t they be slightly shorter so that they fit underneath those flaps that you are folding over?
I like how she says it would probably take 15 minutes because it def took me close to 1 1/2 hours (having everything already cut and prepped) but I love these bags. I’m making them as Christmas gifts!
I have found that if you are going to make a few cut a bunch at once and it works well…
What a great tote tutorial, thank you and I can’t believe I haven’t found you before! It is so great to have someone with such personality doing sewing tutorials! I actually chuckle out load when I watch your videos, you are like a breath of fresh air!!
That means so much to me! Thank you for commenting. At the end of the day, if I can help just make some people smile, then I've done my part. And if they make a bag that's nice too😂. Thank you for watching!
These are terrific. I get canvas upholstery remnants from the sale bin, prewash them, and combine them with quilt-weight leftovers. The size is just right, any bigger and they’d probably be too heavy when filled. Like another viewer, I add a loop so I can put them on the bag frame at the store- so helpful. And I agree, 30” is perfect for the strap length. Thanks so much, Jess!
This was an easy sew just like they said! I'll always make my bags this way. Thanks for sharing!
Glad I found this! No plastic bags in Albuquerque starting January 2020!
Oh wow that is great to hear, Darlene! I can imagine the transition will be a challenge, I know even I rely on those dang plastic bags too often. This really is a great alternative. If you make one, you may be recruited to make MANY more for friends and family (just warning you!).
Oregon too!
Loved this video! Great tutorial & a fun instructor. I really like purl soho and I just made my husband a sugar skull apron for Christmas. It has great lined pockets too.
Thanks for showing us how to make this one 🥰
Thank you for watching, Kim! I can't wait to try more of their patterns.
What a great tutorial, so clear. Will definitely be making a few of these
This was my very first bag while I was learning to sew during the lock down. I still smile every time I see canned fruits. Lol
It is adorable!❤️ I’m definitely gonna make one. Thank you!
Your comment about the french seam made me a subscriber! Lol! This is a really cute project & I'm a beginner so I am going to try this, thank you! 🙋♀️
I know right. That was EXACTLY my reaction when she said French seams. So funny, as soon as she said it, my finger went straight to the x and then... I made the bag. Love it!!
@@breakingthread ha ha! Glad you made the bag. 🙂
I really loved your tutorial. The way you explain everything made it super easy to understand. Thank you so much. I have made 6 bags in the last 2 days and have material cut for 6 more. For a slightly bigger bag with no wasted material I bought 2 - 7' lengths of material which will make 4 bags when done. I first cut them lengthwise along the fold they had on the bolt. Then I folded each in half and cut along that line. This made each piece of material approximately 22" wide x 42" long. After placing one of each piece of material together (bad sides together) I marked, folded and ironed each side so I would have two inches of the inner lining fabric to decorate the top edge of the bag where the handles would go. *** For those who prefer the look of a 4" band along the top (which I found that I prefer) buy 2 - 7' 8" lengths of material. After cutting each piece of fabric into 4 pieces, they should be approximately 22" w x 46" long. *** I followed your directions on everything else except when boxing the bottom of the bag. I preferred a bigger boxed area so I made my initial mark as 5" on each side. Thanks again and keep the videos coming!
That's fantastic Nikki! I love that you modified the pattern! Thank you for sharing your measurements, that's going to help a lot of folks.
That's perfect for a Sam's bag which was what I was thinking about as I was watching this great video.
Nikki I know this is 2 years old but I just now found this tutorial ! I like your idea of making this bag larger! Could you tell me what the final measurements of your bag are? Thank s so much!!!!!
Love this bag, can’t wait to make it. I react to my bags or creations the same, with such excitement and awe that ‘I did that!” 💕
This makes an adorable simple handbag
Sewwwww, I know this is an old video, but I just absolutely LOVE ALL of your videos. This is the second year I’ve followed you and I swear the confidence your videos give me as a beginner makes me feel like I could do anything!
I love this! I always heat bonded my lining to my canvas because I’m lazy, but I’m gonna give your lining a try! Your boxed corners are easier, too. I get cheap plastic cutting mats and cut them with my scissors to fit the bottoms to give a nice flat surface for my groceries. When I need to wash the bag I just pop them out and wipe them off. I love your tutorial!
i LOVE that idea.. someone was saying a ... brain fart here but basically a certain type of iron on stiffener.
What size do you cut for the bottom of the bag please?
@@dianehanson2678 Easy peasy! Measure the width and length of the bottom of the bag and cut your plastic mat accordingly. For your width you’ll measure 4” - remember, that is the width of the boxed corner. For the length, just measure the inside length of the finished bag. Cut the plastic mat to those measurements, and slip the cut piece of plastic mat into the bag. Push it down until it wedges into place giving your bag a flat surface on the bottom. Note, I like to very slightly round the corners of the plastic mat when cutting it so I don’t end up with sharp edges that could possibly poke through my bag in the future! Enjoy!
Thank you for sharing! The fam and I are looking forward to making these!
I've made 4 of these bags (my first bag!) and they turned out soooo cute! I followed your instructions for the first 2. I made the second 2 a little larger (20" wide and a couple of inches longer with a 4.5" fold on the bottom) and added a pocket inside for keys or phone since I often shop without my purse. I love them! I'll continue to modify the pattern to make gifts for friends. You're right....these take no time to make. Probably 2 hours max for two! Thanks Jess!
I love hearing that!! Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I love bags like this that make it easy to modify and adjust for our specific needs, making it completely unique.
I love French seams rather than serged seems, so I am always happy to find another way to use my French seam. I have loved this bag pattern for several years but couldn't find the inspiration for fabric, etc. Now I am going to make it with your genius sewing innovations! Thank you so much and LOVE your channel! PS that is so cute you don't buy groceries because of all the treats. I have a similar problem with pastries...
I’m a fairly new sewist and don’t have a server, so French seam everything! I love using them, they look so neat
This has to be the best tutorial I have watched so far.
Thanks Jess. This is my new go to bag. Just love it❣ Made two of them and they are easy and perfect.
Great tutorial! French seams are so easy and look great!
I know this is an older video, but I just came across it yesterday. I made a bag & it was so easy. Couldn’t be happier! Can’t wait to make more! Great tutorial! Thank you for doing what you do!
This pandemic helped me find a great hobby in sewing! Your tutorials make it so easy! I can’t wait to do more! ❤️
That's incredible Zaneta! I feel our sewing community grew a lot because of the face masks, and that just means so much to me!
Love this! Just made one for my DIL - she asked if I could make some bags for her BFFs for Christmas presents. I had to ad lib a little bc we bought directional fabric but it's adorable IMO. 🥰
I LOVE your excitement! That is how I feel when I make things

It's very lovely. I love your detail.
Your right that’s an awesome fast & easy bag to make 👍🏼 the only thing I would do is use a dark or printed fabric for the bottom because that would bug me to make such a cute bag and have stains on it that way a printed or dark fabric will hide the stain 😱 but your’s came out very cute loved the colors 😍 I will for sure make some of these bags it would also be a great bag to but a gift 🎁 in it that your giving someone instead of those paper gift bags at least the person could use the bag after it could be part of their gift 🎁 awesome 👍🏼 Thank you for the idea ♥️
Thanks Mary Ann! That is a great suggestion, darker fabrics are much better for daily use. We use these for all kinds of things, it's surprising really. Have fun making them!
,canvas on the bottom will wear better than cotton.
I’m gonna try this, It’s very cute! Thank you for your simple step-by-step instructions❣️
Thank you so much! I feel so proud to be able to follow your instructions with ease. I am so proud of myself
I love this tutorial! This is such an easy tote to make! I have made several of this size but I kind of tweaked it a little and made mine a little bigger. You are so much fun to watch and I giggle throughout it. Thank you so much!
What size did you increase this to? And then....how far from the center point did you place your handles ( if different from the 3" in video)?
@@christineross4839 I'd love to know too.
@@christineross4839 I would love to know the measurements that you changed to enlarge it

love that french seam! I make pillow cases with french seams, never thought of using it to make totes. thank you!
Can you believe I still haven't made a pillow case yet? It's actually on my list!
@@OklaRoots for a pillowcase, you should try the burrito method from Shabby Fabrics, super easy and it uses French seams!!
I made several of these for my coworkers. We love them.
Jess you are such a joy to watch thank you 😊
I love it! The only thing I do differently when i make 2 toned bags - is I go ahead and cut the canvas at the correct size and when I add the decorative border at the top it's just double-layered
That's a great idea! Makes it even more durable. I'm going to give it a try! Thanks for the tip!
For me, it is easier to double the ‘turn down’ amount, so if you want a 1/2 inch turned down; mark your fabric at 1 inch and align the raw edge to there & the amount of hem will be 1/2 inch. No peeking, the line can clearly seen.
This is what I do too :)
I also use this technique for hemming my t-shirts and casual blouses. I like your simple explanation for someone who hasn't used this method.
Thank you Jess for a fantastic tutorial!! I have made about 4 of these already so fun to do.
Made this. I’m pretty proud of myself first bag I’ve done and it looks like I got it from a fancy store! Thanks for sharing this! I absolutely love it 😍
I always wanted to sew. This would be a great first sewing project. Your video was amazing!!
XOXO Doreen
You should definitely sew Doreen! I think you'll love it, and this is a great starter project. Let me know if you make it!
I *love* this bag! I would add a loop on one side, top and middle, so that it can be held up at the checkout by the framework there. Going to make one of these. Or two.Or three!.....Hugs!
We do the loop at our boomerang bag class
This is by far - the easiest, sturdiest and fastest tote pattern ever! Amazing. Thank you!

I love the way you did the double sewing at the bottom part. Also love the whole pattern cause it seems so easy and simple to make. TYSM for sharing this video with us. (BTW - I didn't see any stains on your bag you showed us at the beginning. 😉) Love your channel. 👍😍❣😻
I'm obsessed with making bags now! I use your tutorial and the original for when I add a pocket. I do the boxed corner only once, from the wrong side at 4", and just leave it uncut -- adds a little more heft & stability inside, I find. I also buy remnants of lighter-weight uphostery fabric or pre-quilted fabric and don't need a lining then. Love watching your channel!
Those are fantastic ideas Lori! It's such a great bag to modify to make it perfect for your needs. I'm so happy to hear you're making them!
I've made 2 of these now and working on more. I love these. My next one is going to be a bit bigger. I'm using some outdoor cloth that I bought a year ago and not adding the accent across the top. I made my own straps using the outer cloth so I hope it holds up.
I will be making this bag. Looks so easy. By the way you are adorable.
Thank you Peggy! Report back and let me know how you like making the bag!
Hi, Jess love love this bag so easy to make, was wondering if you’ve ever made bags from jeans,

Hello again! I've made at least 10 of these bags now for gifts, easy to make and everyone loves them. They feel super sturdy and high quality. Thank you again, I'll probably end up making 10 more!
I am working on making bags for resale. I am not new to a sewing machine but am new to bag making. Yesterday I did the lining just as you did. I didn't know what I was doing but it worked. Thank you for validating my thought process. You explain so well and you have a pleasant voice that doesn't make me change the channel. You aren't too slow and show the steps at the right speed. There is another corner that is like an envelope that is on the outside. Will work on that. Excellent video!
I'm so glad it went so well for you! You're going to be hooked on bags now 😉
I love these bags - simple but look good and are strong. I live in Oregon and on Jan 1, 2020 the “no plastic bags for groceries” law goes into effect so I will be making a few of these. I’m going to try the Pul lined later because I will have to order some, but I made one with oil-cloth lining which turned out great. I agree with Maryann Beck - your video is easy to follow and your voice is easy to listen to. I subscribed to your channel so I look forward to more projects.
I love your energy!!! Let's make a toddler sheet set

You could also put another little strap in the middle 4 inches long that the checker can use on the hook of the bag stand. I love this video. Thank you.
Brenda, you won't believe this but I just gave the EXACT SAME response to another commenter asking about this exactly... Are we on the same brain wave length?! It's such a good idea! I feel 1000% more confident in my response now. Thank you!
Awesome idea, taking it, thank you! 😊

So excited! I’m going to attempt this bag soon
This is the BEST lined bag tutorial. I've have made several following this tutorial. So very EASY. Love it.
"Just because it's French, doesn't mean it's fancy!".. Sooooo true 😉👌
Hahahaha!
In France it’s called couture anglaise= english seam😂
I notice when I have a darker or busy lining, it's much harder to see what's inside. So I would vote for the light color inside, the busy stuff outside. It wouldn't' show the dirt as much. Maybe keeping it cheap, you could use denim outside and lighter cotton inside. And may I suggest, if the hubs goes shopping you gotta step back from the florals lol! I find your lining method great!, easiest I have seen! Thank you!
Hahaha thank you so much for the tips! Yes, I've been trying to offer a little less floral on his grocery bags! Poor guy is such a good sport. Denim would be SUCH a fun bag. I have to try that!
Great job on your tote bag. Very simple for what you want to use it for.
I am making my second one today. The first one was a huge success - and I am a beginner. This is all thanks to your video, Jess!
And since I wrote this a year ago I have made countless bags! I use it instead of wrapping paper (saving trees etc.) and pop gifts in a specially made bag. Thanks again, Jess.
