So, if no ones mentioned it already, Emma Thompson used her own experience with her ex-husband (Kenneth Brannagh) cheating on her in that scene.
That's bloody heartbreaking đą
Guess that makes sense though, she conveyed so much emotion in that scene. What a legend - Stef
What can you possibly expect from Gilderoy Lockhard? :(
Yep, and the other woman was Helena Bonham Carter.
Fun fact the actress who played Natalie was bullied in British media for supposedly being overweight that's why in "Love Actually" they always commented on her weight to acknowledged how ridiculously it is.
Ah, that makes more sense now - Stef
Makes sense! But idk if itâs âfunâ lol more sad.
Fun Fact: originally Rowan Atkinson's character was kinda like an undercover angel which is why he gives that knowing wink to Liam Neeson and why he took FOREVER to wrap that necklace for Rickman. He filmed more scenes but at some point there was a Major rewrite and they had to cut it way down and take out the whole "undercover angel " bit entirely.
That's such a good plot point and honestly I'm pretty bummed they didn't keep more of him but I guess things were a bit crowded with the storylines already đ - Stef
Too many plot points, some had to go... sadly that included TWO gay or implied gay narratives.
That would have been way more interesting than the actual movie honestly
As a portuguese girl, that was not too far fetched, a traditional portuguese neighborhood where everybody knows each other! And the part where everyone followed him is pretty accurate too, we just wanna know whatâs happening first hand đ

@@sarahxo2317 yeah, kinda surprised me lol - Sam
The joke was that the woman with Liam Neeson at the end was Claudia Schiffer, who his wife wanted him to get with when she passed :( Fucking love these commentaries though!
And there is only about 17ish years difference in there ages. Which isn't horrible. And she is only 6 years younger than Natasha Richardson, Liam Neeson's wife at the time of this movie.
Thanks for clarifying because I did not recognise her at all đ - Sam
Yeah, it isnât really wrong, I was just mad that a lot of the relationships depicted here ended up being an old dude and a young woman. That shouldnât be a standard thing. Could have had a few smaller age gaps in there đ€ - Sam
@@themoviebudz1988 I just want to whole heartedly agree with you. Having made the mistake of dating someone that was much older. Conceptually you can rationalize many things, but there is definitely a reason why it is a skeevy cliche. Personally, if there is enough time for a whole person to grow into "adulthood" between you đł you should question whether that's really a road built for both of you. Be with whomever you want. But I had to state my piece. âź
@@katemoon1594 Out of all the healthy, good, and long lasting relationships I know from people in my life, every last one was had a fairly decent age gap difference. Out of all the terrible relationships, they were all from people close in age.

LOL he speaks multiple languages but non are in Portuguese, then the other woman said "multo bueno" is in Spanish but actually is not, because in Spanish it would be "muy bien or muy bueno" :) so the way they used it in the movie was a combination of Italian and Spanish :)) So both characters were wrong :))

I mean, the joke could have referenced someone older though?
I still agree with the original sentiment behind his statement though tbh
@@shadowboxing7029 Yup. Also, not only is this movie largely about older guys getting with much younger women, in each of those three instances (not including the claudia schiffer moment), the younger woman is the employee of the older man, her boss. Ugh

Thank you so much! That means a lot to us đ - Sam
I kinda love how it depicts the reality of love being weird and messy. Also the most moving and important relationships in this movie I would say are the platonic ones. Sibling love, self love, parental love are all love and have a place. The only realy good romatic one was between the two actors which I love since it just shows the build up of a healthy relationsip. Thompson and Rickmanâs story is so interesting and complex because she doesnt just forgive and forget, and he doesnât totally throw away everything as he still only bought a necklace, but it still showes that those underlying reasons and feelings are valid for the wife to feel upset about. He knows he fucked up. Then I do like the whole producer and the washed up rockstar bromance thing that does end up happening. That too is love. The woman with the brother feel love for her brother, but she also needs to develope her self love and take care of herself. I feel that does come through in this movie too. The kids are of course adorable, and the relationship with the stepdad is so cute and wholesome. Not to say there arenât other issue of course but Iâm not sure they were soo egredious that I feel like they overshaddow the movieâs good points.
At 13:00 he wasn't throwing out random foreign words he was trying to say "Com grande prazer", which is Portuguese for "with great pleasure", a Portuguese speaker would understand that even with the heavy accent. As for 'bela montanha" in the car, it means "beautiful mountain" in Portuguese, he was trying really hard to speak and it wasn't that bad, in fact it sounds quite adorable.
Probably why she fell in love with him...plus looking like Colin Firth can't hurt
2:56 ew. exactly.
Also making Mark's storyline gay would have made it 100% better, let's be real. Honestly though, I know I've said this before, but I really like how you guys consistently call out creepy behaviour even and especially when it's portrayed as romantic. Anyway, I'm rambling. I loved the video and I'm already looking forward to the next.
(idk if this is a me problem, but I always have to turn up my speakers all the way to hear both you guys and the movie properly :/)

The audio is a consistent issue Iâve been working on every video... đ we filmed the KFC video partly just to test audio equipment đ - Sam
OOh what if he has still turned up at the door with the cards, but it was all about how he was giving his blessing to their marriage instead. Like «I didnât think annyone could be good enough for him, but then I met you and realized that you will make eachother happy».
@@ruchi5345 incredibly late but it would be less creepy because Kiera Knightlyâs character thought that he hated her because he never spoke to her. So instead of it being his best friend who heâs already had a platonic relationship with, itâs a girl who was basically a stranger to him with how little they spoke to one another
It wouldâve been just as creepy solely filming someone youâre in love with and keeping the video for yourself whether he was gay or not. I wish he just videoed them both like normal while somehow make it known he had feelings for her
I love that the lady corrects Colin Firth by saying that "molto bueno" is Spanish when "molto" is Italian đ "Very good" in Spanish is "muy bueno".
That scene is still hilarious, though.
Would have been so funny if he clapped back by correcting her đ - Stef

Probably my fav Christmas movie and I still love it even though I know a lot of the things that happen in the movie can be considered problematic these days. I just remember that it's just a movie, and a very intentionally unrealistic one in order to be a feel good Christmas movie. I also acknowledge that some of the humor is definitely male-centric but in the context of a silly movie, is relatively harmless.
Yeah, we definitely noticed a bunch of things in this movie that weren't ok and it was so weird to see it in that light. That said, we still really enjoy this movie for what it is - Sam
I agree about watching movies as fiction and not taking things seriously, but this movie depresses me every time I watch it. Like maybe one relationship works out in a way that feels like they maybe will get a happy ending.
"I think the idea of 'the one' keeps people in relationships they really shouldn't be in..."
Equally, it sets up the false expectation that if you find "the one" then your relationship will (should) be easy.
You and your partner choosing each other each day, even when it's hard - that's what *makes* them "the one."
Omg young Thomas Brodie Sangster is literally the cutest thing. HES THE MOST ADORABLE KID EVER! Even though it doesnât look like he has aged much, itâs insane to seen how much heâs grown as actor over the years. He was always a good actor but heâs fucking amazing now. Good call on the intensionality of Rowan Atkinson's character. In the original concept of the film he was supposed to be something of an angel figure. As the filming progressed the director decided to scrap that idea, but his scenes still have a bit of that feeling to them. Enjoying your reactions. Happy Holidays to you and yours, from Canada.
That would have been so cool, and there was definitely other stuff they could have cut to make room for his character. Ah well. Thanks for the love and happy holidays to you too đ - Stef
Ok so I know Iâm blowing up the comment section rn but yâallâs response to her dealing with family issues at like ~22:00 (ish) actually brought tears to my eyes. It seems like such a low bar but itâs always so refreshing and comforting to see folks (men, especially) be so open and understanding and kind and respectful.
And I hope that doesnât come across as man-bashing. My point was only that historically speaking, in society men have been conditioned in many ways to not tap into those types of empathetic emotions.

there was actually only a five year age difference between thomas brodie sangster (sam) and keira knightley (juliet) when this movie was filmed. thomas just doesnât age lol he was almost 30 when he played a 13 year old in game of thrones :)
Ikr ! He looks so young ! I'm a girl but people compare me sometimes to him bc I'm 15 but I look 10 .đ

Oh wow, I never thought about how movies portrayed women always taking initiative in romantic situations as if men could do fuck all and always get away with it! Your analysis was so unexpected it threw me off at first , but when you explained it made so much sense! That is such an insightful & discerning way of looking at it... I'm going to be thinking about this in the future for sure.
I think itâs an over correction to how older movies have men take the innitiative in ways that looking back are pretty quastionable.
I always noticed it...I wish it would stop too. It sets such a bad example for people.
In a making of video of this movie the creators said that they needed Karl to be a hot, good looking foreigner (Rodrigo Santoro is from Brazil), because no one would believe Sarah had a crush on an english guy for over three years. Gotta love british humor.
And apparently Alan Rickman asked for the scene where he apologizes to his wife to be in the movie, or even in the script, because he felt so bad about it. I mean Rickman himself was in a relationship with his wife since the late 60s until his death (they only married a couple of month before he died).

There is kind of a group of Hugh Grant films from around this era with similar pools of actors that are classics and well worth watching. I highly recommend Four Weddings and A Funeral if you haven't seen it (also has Rowan Atkinson stealing scenes). It has a similar good balance of humour and drama and random Englishness. It's a little old now but well worth watching.
People always say I dropped everything to watch but.I just ditched another CZcams video to be here.Yes I admit I get excited seeing you guys post. Also I have not watched the video yet.I commented first lolđ
Thatâs sick! Itâs so nice to know you enjoy our videos that much đ

Yay!! You guys made my day!
Iâm glad we could do that! đ - Sam
I donât know if anyoneâs mentioned it in the comments, but Richard Curtis (creator of the movie) actually said that Rowan Atkinson/Mr Beanâs character is supposed to be an angel, but it sort of got cut out of the film. He intentionally held up Alan Rickman so Emma Thompson would find the necklace and he intentionally got the kid through the gate.
Got recommended your "Dirty Dancing" video by a friend. It was wonderful! Have since watched a bunch of your movie reactions & commentaries. You guys are always so on point. Funny and engaging, but also super insightful and critical in the appropriate ways. I can't tell you how relieved I was to hear you both talk about how the "To me, you are perfect" guy's actions are actually gross and huge red flags. I've always hated how people treat that storyline as some cute romantic thing. Not blaming those people! The movie frames it that way, after all. But it's gross and I hate it and you two are a breath of fresh air. Thank you so much!
I love billy! And now I love you guys
Love you guys movie reactions
Thank you so much! - Sam
I do love this movie, total nostalgia for me but yeah, definitely has some issues đ.
I always saw the situation between David (the prime minister) and Natalie to be that he moved her to a different department because he partly blames her for the situation that happened with the American President. Which is all kinds of messed up and victim blaming, the President has loads of power and took advantage of that with Natalie, it was very clear that she wasn't in to it but instead of helping Natalie after basically being sexually harassed, David blames her and moves her to a different department. Then she later apologises to him, it's pretty gross.
Do love your reactions, can't wait for the next one đ
I really like your videos! I hope you'll make a lot more!
Thank you so much! We intend to make as many as we can đ - Sam
