It's understandable for a parent to stay attached to the child and protect them. But when they finally become an adult you must let them go on their own path of life and support them. Because if you continue to stay attached to your child, your child will distance themselves from you.
Being protected all the time can also lead to being controlled. and sometimes People can get sick and tired of being protected all the time.

It is hard to let go but the mother went too far. Sleeping in his and his wife's bedroom, ruining her son's honeymoon and trying to trick him into taking pills has the opposite effect of a mother's love, all it does is drive your child away. She kept poking her nose in and interfering. A mother who truly loves doesn't attempt to ruin their child's marriage or play such despicable tricks.

I agree. Maybe a follow up episode where James's mom, Ethel, and Karen's mom, Robin, talks to each other. She points out that she raised Karen to be a good person and they have a solid communication with each other. When it came time for Robin to let go of her daughter and let her make her own choices, she did so knowing that Karen was prepared for the real world. She understands Ethel's concerns over letting James go, but trying to hold on to the control is selfish of her. Robin asks her if there was personal reasons why she's trying to hold on to him. Ethel finally confesses that James's father and her former husband, Michael, left them years ago. How she was always afraid that he would leave her too if she allowed him to let him live his own life and which is why she tried to control him. Robin tells Ethel that she understands that feeling, but she's doing a lot more harm to James than help by forcing herself on him. That it's better to let him go and let him live his own life. In that moment, Ethel finally understands everything Robin has told her. She hasn't been able to let James go properly and trying to keep him all to herself because she was always afraid that he would leave her like Michael did. Ethel accepts she has a problem and needs to undergo therapy for her issues

I'm glad my MIL wasn't like this and is never like this, let your kids grow up and have a life too! Yes they'll always be your child but if you love them, let them go and learn about the real world. I dated a guy who's mom was like this woman, always wanted to go out with us on dates and wanted to know about our sex life. I couldn't take it anymore and broke up with him and this was before I met my now husband.

i understand it's hard for parents to let go of their children as they get older. But you have to, in order for their relationship to remain healthy. You cant continue to poke your nose and constantly meddle in their affairs it will only chase them away from you, not keep them close to you.

Sometimes parents are the one's who push away their children. It's good to have a bond with them but that type of attachment may have a big blast. The father is missing in the picture which most probably is what causes the mum to not let go the son.

James' mum wans't just clingy she was possessive of james in a not so healthy way, she was even willing to prevent him to be able to have children during her attempts, she shouldn't have been surprised that after finding out the truth he would no longer trust 'mummy' and want nothing to do with her. Mother's need to except that their son's aren't going to stay children forever and not wanting to let them go when they become adults espcially when they get married they percieve it as a threat of their position of being the most important person in their child's life and because of that they go out of their way sabotaging the relationship deludedly thinking that they still remain #1 while that may work for some but not always and they end up not only losing their son but any chance of having a relationship with future grandchildren and become lonely, mother's need to understand they are still important to their child but so will others.
